Great video! The square patterns and straight line, work of course, when there is no currents, and this is rarely the case. With the currents you would have to adjust, but this should still be based on some natural reference. One time I remember I dived with a compass that was wrong at almost 30 degrees, as I held it near my torches and it was de-(mis)magnetized, so I knew the numbers to return to the shore, but didn't realised the compass was really wrong. Lucky my buddy had correct readings. And another thing - is I almost always use the compass to get to some point or to return back, but never for planning complex routes, as I never remember them. I know some other guy who regardless of currents always could find the boat anchor line after quite a complex dive in an unknown site in quite a bad visibility. Thanks for the video!

Those people are magicians. Love it. Whenever I have to do complex navigation (or cave dive), i take a little wrist notepad so I don't forget. Otherwise I would 100% get lost. Thanks for sharing your story!

@@AzulUnlimited It is actually a good point to write down the navigation in a notepad. I might try it next time somewhere in the sand area, the only problem with the sand area is there are little reference points or they might all look the same! 🙂

I have just found your channel, love it! I have ‘a thing’ about numbers and was scared about compasses. Since I started diving again (by accident, long story), the compass came back to haunt me for the AOW and then Rescue Diver. I bought the PADI manual, compass and started to do the basic exercises. When I did my Rescue a diver course, I told my instructor about my ‘block’ in advance. His teaching technique was just to shout at me louder! As an instructor in another field, I hope that it is a ‘technique I will never and have never used! 😂 So, I live in a ski resort and I have been practicing in a nearby snow covered meadow with my compass and PADI manual and I am just going over the basic exercises over and over again, helped by my neighbour’s Basset Hound Ethel! The snow is really useful as I see the patterns that I have made, for someone like me that has really helped! So, for several days I have been just repeating the exercises until it embed in my head! I am making my way through your videos! Good luck!

I was able to deal with the instructor and didn’t take it personally l I just saw it as a weakness in his ‘ teaching methods’. I know my ways of learning now……having recognized my own needs for learning a long time ago . I get such a kick out of overcoming these challenges now!

When heading for a specific point like a wreck I like to have the captain call out the bearing # s off the gps when we get in the water so if you've drifted a bit you know exactly what direction to go

Liked. Subbed . Good class... (Sting underwater currents drifting??? Off course?). Do a class on how to handle that type of challenge underwater that's always a big deal when ur 65 feet down in murky waters or Kelp Forrest and there's a current..pushing u off course ...

I have been looking at some diving compasses. One that I like is called an "indirect reading compass"...where the dial numbers are backwards or reversed. Im not sure of the advantages or disadvantages of using an indirect reading compass for diving? Please give me advice?

It may cause the head to get stuck but tapping it will usually fix that. Just make sure to check that it's reading correctly before each dive

I got 8 dives in 328 mins give or take. It's only been in Florida fresh water lakes and some springs so peaceful down there. But I'm scared to go in the ocean sharks terrify me I live near Boca grande and sometimes we'll park the boat up on the beach and I'll put stick poles to hold the boat in place and I've had bull sharks go by me not even a foot apart feeding on fish do you have any ideas how to get over that fear cuz I really want to go to the keys and go diving this summer. Also what do you prefer more a wrist mount compass or on your spg?

Honestly, just going with an experienced dive guide at a really simple dive site (shallow, no surge or current, good visibility) is the way to do it. Once you see that sharks are SO NOT INTERESTED in divers, you will hopefully relax and just enjoy how incredible they are. Sharks are actually usually scared of divers (although in florida they might do more shark feeding so the sharks may be used to divers and know that they get food when we show up - but all they want are the fishes!) As for compass, i prefer wrist mount. Easier to keep it flat and more simple to just glance at it.

I use the same compass. Not very accurate but it does point in the right direction. PADI advocates you move the bezel when using it to navigate in a square.

Drift currents made a complete fool out of me for my AOW nav exercise, over a featureless sandy bottom so no landmarks to cross check by. Instructor said just make allowance for the current, which didn't help in practice. Felt bad about that exercise but it got worse. Last dive of the day I forgot to put my weight belt on and couldn't figure why it was so difficult staying trim at depth. Instructor gives me all his weight (all credit to him) and we proceed. He is out front and stops, throwing his arms out like he is having some sort of an episode. A juvenile humpback steams through right to left at 5 metres distance. That was a day and a course i'll never forget!

Getting lost is so worth moments like that!!!! How amazing. Even advanced divers would find that kind of sandy bottom navigation hard so don't beat yourself up for that one. We've all been there :)

Regarding trimming watch bands - just replace the strap for a nato or normal sized watch strap. takes seconds and opens up ability to use nice bright colours. keep your original strap if you ever come to sell or use in cold water.

Whatever is best for what you need. I know some people like to have their compasses attached to their bcd with a retractable line.

As a part of my Advanced Open Water, doing the Navigation, we went to a pinnacle and for the reciprocal navigation I set the compass, the Divemaster in training was acting as my buddy and both of us head into the blue away from the pinnacle... Before turning back a bull shark showed up and both of us just swim like crazy toward the shark until we realized how lost we were..... mmmmmm 5 minutes later we found the pinnacle but not because the compass, i guess was our lucky day!

You can use natural navigation to get back to your entry point or surface to get a better idea of where you are (we sometimes call that periscoping 😂)

I remember me writing on a friend's pad: "we either came out in the wrong cove or they stole the van".

In theory, using a compass is simple. In practice, not so much. I did my basic scuba class over the summer. On the open water dives, they actually take us out on the ocean in a boat. Apparently, this area is tough - less than 8' visibility on a good day, strong currents, etc. Anyways, we were to navigate to the lighthouse, then back to the boat underwater-Easy breezy. Just go back the opposite way you went. Somehow, I ended up about 50 yards shy of the boat.

Yep. Current is a big factor with accurate navigation. Great practice though! Makes regular nav days super easy

@@AzulUnlimited yea, they basically said they take people out in this area because if you can handle the ocean around here, diving elsewhere in the clear, calm water will be easy. Interestingly, he did say that in super clear water, distance is sometimes more difficult to judge.

I once had to do a dive with a PADI employee who was a Master Scuba Diver...I led the dive and entered the water in one spot and came up in exactly the same spot using time/shoreline natural technique navigation. He dived the WHOLE dive with his arm out and compass in front of him...I have NO idea of what he saw during the dive (compass perhaps)? Admittedly, we only had 3-4 meters of vis, but it was an enjoyable dive for the most part. He did ask me how was I able to bring us back to the same spot. Uh I said, just naturally I guess (years of experience - timing is my key).

Yeah, compass should be use to help the main navigation or just to double check the main direction, reciprocal etc but not as a main way of orientation for the whole dive. Natural references, timing, aquatic life, lights and shadows etc should be enough and then compass to make sure (unless you have really bad vis) Thanks for sharing tho!

I never understand all this lubber line stuff and setting a reference marker. If my dive site is north-east of where I start, when i want to go back I just just turn around and swim south west by my compass back to the start point. If I'm diving out west I return east...no lubber line or reference points necessary. 900 dives and never got lost 😊

Hehhee Digital diving computers are great but I normally use them as a back up but I have another one integrated on my console, just in case, plan B is a great plan to have.

Honestly i still cannot figure out how to use the compas,how do i get back to my staring point etc? Tomorrow is my first compas usage and i can't seem to figure it out

Small correction, unless you cause severe mechanical damage (needle gets stuck, unreadable face...) Or place it near a strong magnetic field. While they are pretty simple and extremely hard to break. A check once in a while doesn't hurt. Also, yes it's probably your brain playing tricks on you.
