Hi full-time Dive Instructor/Family man/Home Owner here in Florida. I think the major issue that summizes all of your points is: Scuba is in a 'race to the bottom.' (Pun intended.) How cheap can we make courses? How fast can we teach classes? $99 OW Course! How can anyone make money off of that!? Charge a premium, provide quality Instruction and service and make mad money. In addition, the Industry is flooded with 'will work for experience' Instructors who increase that insurance cost you mentioned, especially here in the States!

Hi!!! Love your channel 💙 And yes to all your points! It is so crazy to see how many people continue to shoot themselves in the foot and drive this industry down. Every single IDC we taught, we pushed people to not go with that 'work for experience' BS. There are so many things to fix... It feels like we need a giant reset button. Thank you for watching. I so SO appreciate it!

What a honest video. I just found your channel and this is the first video I watch, thank you so much for making content about SCUBA diving. I switched career from software development consultant to SCUBA diving instructor (following my true passion). I did my IDC end of December 2019 and then the pandemic hit 2020 couldn't dive and 2021 I decided to open my business as an independent instructor and my idea is to get my own customers through social media but I've found it quite hard to get costumers through this.I'm still on it and my plan is to make content about SCUBA diving and marine conservation this new year. I feel the diving industry is sinking but I remain optimistic and will do my best to get new customers into this wonderful world. Greetings from Santa Marta, Colombia !

I was hemorrhaging money on licensure, equipment, and travel as a volunteer, but it hit me when I applied with 50 other candidates for one part-time minimum wage EMT opening that I needed to do something else. Good luck with the new adventure. Sometimes "not renewing" is the way to go!

Hi . You did a very good job in explaining your reasons. You are correct in what you have said. I have been teaching for 26 years and also have been fortunate enough to work with a couple of shops that did well. My teaching was not my day job and it did take a lot of time during the season. Was lucky enough to have a good job and only hoped to break even with costs and expenditures at the end of the year. The most I tach now is a couple of tech courses and IDC's. As a master instructor I understand what you have said . Just keep diving if not teaching. HAPPY NEW YEAR and SAFE DIVING

Hi Sarah, I'm of an older generation & only started SCUBA at 60. But in my 20s & 30s I was a street musician living in a van, a bigger van, & then a 30 foot bus, as more children "came into " my wife & I's life. All that to say mobile living can work, (including relationships). So here's wishing you all the best as you go forward. Ps. I got my certification in cold water, (& do most of my diving in a dry suit in Europe) but when I can get to warmer climes everything is Soooooo easy, the freedom of movement, the dexterity, just a JOY.

Oh yes, I know that struggle too. I did both yoga teaching and scuba while I was in Mexico. It's hard to make a living that way because people want to do these things and find value in them, but don't want to pay a respectable amount for the service. Good luck out there 🙏 Stay tuned for expeditions! You can be the first to know if you sign up for our email list or follow us on Instagram :)

I can relate all too well to most of what you say in this video, it’s almost scary… I’ve been in the dive industry for 15 years plus, with 2 gaps in between, one due to COVID 19. I just started a new job 2 months ago that was supposed to get me back me back into diving, but sadly enough I’m beginning to regret this move already: first, with the pandemic still dominating the international travel industry in a very destructive way, I hardly get enough diving to do to actually enjoy it. But, maybe even more importantly, I have to admit that never before did I feel the loneliness you talk about as strongly as these days, having experienced living around my family again for the past 1.5 years. Plus, I’m getting older too… So no idea for how long I will accept this situation. By the way, I met Aitor as part of the Course Director team when I got my staff instructor certification in Playa del Carmen - good memories 😎

Hi Sarah. It's nice to see an honest opinion about the industry from someone with a lot of experience and from what you've said in this video I can see how working like that can become quite hard. I live in Melbourne Australia and although, for many, a lot of international (or even northern state) divers would cringe at the thought of diving in Port Phillip bay because it is essentially cold water. I can say with all honesty that the waters around my home have easily as much to offer as most tropical dives, but comparing the two is like apples and oranges, they are completely different worlds, but the variety and sea life is still amazing, not to mention the dozens and dozens of wrecks in and around the bay, your options are seemingly endless. Getting a little off track, my point was that I'm slowly working towards potentially doing instructing and I've already established my career as an electrician. The beauty of doing the work down here is that Melbourne has huge opportunity to work in basically any industry you want and, simply because of the weather and seasons, Scuba is very muchly a seasonal thing here, so it's very easy to sign on with a local school and really only have to worry about being super busy during the summer months. Granted there is diving still going on over the winter period (reefs seem to be more vibrant and more viz when it's cold, although a dry suit is strongly recommended XD ) it's done to a far lesser extent and you're not being slammed from every direction with very little reward. Not sure about fees and whatnot (haven't looked into it that far yet tbh) but for the most part you don't need to be a small business owner as there are plenty of dive shops / schools around that are more than happy to take instructors on for temp work on wages. Not sure if you knew about that already? Food for thought though if you haven't. Always good to find new ways to expand your diving adventures. Loved the video and hope you don't lose your passion. :)

Thanks for this! Yes, each kind of diving has its' beauty and like I said, I do love the cold water diving, just teaching in it can be a drag. I do know about temp work and freelancing and everything. I just have a demanding (but rewarding) 'normal' person job these days so I'm enjoying a bit of a break from the hustle. Definitely haven't lost the passion. I'm still gonna be sharing stuff here and putting together fun adventures :)

Hi Sarah, i am sad to hear that you are leaving although odd as it may seem i was not totally surprised. The Covid19 pandemic has devastated many industries, most especially those related to the tourism & travel industry on a global scale. Diving as a recreation , business and an industry was not spared due to the numerous lockdowns & travel restrictions. I have viewed your numerous posts on various occasions and have found them to be very instructive, informative and interesting. It is my humble opinion that you are an excellent professional instructor ( although i miss the pleasure of being a student of yours, of which i am certain i would have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!) and the Labuan Bajo ie Lombok ,Indonesian diving community in general, is going to miss you. Your infectious enthusiasm, charming exuberance, warm passion , sincerity and dedication has touched the lives of many ,i am sure.( and i am pretty sure that you will go on to touch even more in the near future.) I do not dare to claim that i fully understand all the reasons that you have so openly chosen to share with us on why you have decided to stop teaching scuba diving, at least for the time being. But After carefully listening to you, i respect you even more. We all have our needs. With time some of these may change in terms of priorities n importance. Under the current circumstances & situation, i am confident you are making the right decision ; It is time to put YOURSELF FIRST. I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 & All the very best in your future endeavours . For your new beginning, May you be showered with abundance of great health, wealth, success, joy & happiness. God bless you Sarah, for you are such a wonderful human being . Take care & stay safe, whether diving or not. Salam hangat, Warmest n kind regards, Jimmy.

This may have been for demo purposes, but try not to store the zipper closed. If you keep it open, but protected, when stored then it will last longer. 2. We live in northwest Indiana on Lake Michigan. Yes cold water stinks but there are some small lakes and quarry’s , including Lake Michigan that the diving is pleasurable. I get sometimes you just need a break . Good luck

I think sometimes it's good to take time for yourself, just to let be. We are living being with a wonderful mind, body and spirit. All off these need stimulation for our wellbeing, hence you have an urge to try another and let me say you are doing just fine, I am just an ordinary being as yourself just taking the time to close all else brings forth inner true happiness. All the best to you, living a fulfilled life.

I'm hearing your pain, and it is sad that the industry does not look after it's diving instructors better. The reality is that everyone undercuts each other to get that 'next' class of students into a course, and while dive shops continue to do that then wages and the benefits of a Scuba Instruction lifestyle will suffer. Been there done that. In Australia certain shops are very aggressively ruining the industry this way. So I feel for you and this decision. But there is life after de-certification, and to settling down somewhere for other work. You will meet other people and join a community where you can meet other divers and have great relationships (and even dives! 🤣), so there is that. I wish you all the best for 2022, that you can find all you need and are looking for, even: money and love. Good luck and GOD bless you!👍👌🖖

If she’s having trouble getting enough clients, why doesn’t she do some ads on her own to bring more people to her dive shop? She could give 5 star reviews to her dive shop to bring more customers. She could post on Facebook, CL, Google ads. She could do a lot!

@@charlesg7926 Yeah I'm guessing she doesn't OWN a shop herself, but works for an owner as most DI do. As she stated in the video, there comes a point in time where the level of involvement - to keep things afloat and running in perfect working order to do classes - is just not feasible, or warranted given how much (little) you can make. Then there is 'burnout'. It happens to most of us instructors after many years. It took me almost 30 years to burn out. You get sick and tired of students not listening to you or your instructions; or dive shop owners not helping you run courses when all they do is sit in their shop all day; then you have Instructional Agencies that continually put up their costs each year, and mandating the use of their products, books, teaching materials, etc. - otherwise you are not complying with their regs and standards - standards, which if not kept violate your insurance. This pushes up course costs making your shop/course uncompetitive with other agencies - where some agencies don't require the use of all materials. Then you have the liability insurance - which by law (and good common sense) you must have, they keep upping their prices. Constant litigation requires that you continually increase your cover - as Americans love to sue everyone...Trust me, Many, MANY instructors have been looking at this problem for over 20 years trying to find the best work around or 'fix' to the problems in the industry. Agencies and instructors have researched how to make the courses more user friendly, cost effective, Shorter to make it simpler and more relatable, and though they have been reasonable successful in their attempts, they still have not been able to help people part with their money. The reality is...people JUST DON'T WANT to spend a lot of money learning to dive. They want to do it in a day or two at most (not four days, with less exams and tests and everyone must pass - regardless of the ability and skill level have attained, or not attained as the case may often be) and they want it cheaper and cheaper each year. They EXPECT it. Here in Australia, they want to get off the plane on Wednesday and have finished their course by Friday and have their Cert. Card in the hand, so they can go dive the Coral Sea and the GBR on Saturday and Sunday in Port Douglas or Cairns. In reality, when all other products in society are getting dearer, people want to pay less AND LESS each year for learning to dive each year. It's just insane. So many shops have closed because of the aggressive and competitive nature of the trade. And they are doing it to PLEASE the customer, rather than for the benefit of the industry and safety.

Sarah. I applaud you being so honest. Honest with yourself. RAID has introduced no fees. I’m a lover of vanlife. Humans have succeeded because they adapted to changes. You have simply adapted to what you need. You need to feel like what your doing matters to you. Enjoy what your doing with your life. In my opinion, most people you teach aren’t water babies, which makes it hard. I don’t want to teach scuba. I want people who dive to learn from me, free of charge. Even though most I dive with have higher certification than me. I completely understand what you mean in this video. I hope you enjoy what your doing in life Right Now. Because we never know how much time we have on this beautiful planet. Which is mostly covered by water 😆👌 Safe diving

Sorry but I disagree. I do a hard job so that I can have money to travel and dive. Scuba diving, even being an instructor, is PARADISE by comparison. If she’s complaining about a Dive job, then she’s not going to be happy with ANY type of work. She’s just lazy 🤔
