In the models with “U” on the end. Those models also allow you to set the light to three seconds, and keep home time on in stopwatch and count down modes.

Dealbreaker for me. I bought the new version, GW-M5610U with the blue lining but I hated the strap and the LED light is just...... horrible. Yes, it illuminates the screen very well but it just isn't appealing. Nice updates all round but not for me.

Super video, thanks Greg. I was concerned with the updated models switching to LED, but after seeing this, I’m pretty much ok with it. I wasn’t aware that LEDs use less power than EL. And that EL may fade over time. Those two things are probably the best things I learned all week! So yeah, thanks.

The GMW B5000 allows you to set the backlight to either 2 or 4 seconds on. And the light doesn't switch off suddenly, but fades away. A very nice touch.

Thanks for all the diverse examples of Casio illumination! I am going to guess EL is the majority's favorite, but I can see the need to move onto LEDs, hotspots or not. Edit: Also nice that Casio, who tends to specialize in '70s-80s era watches (and thankfully hasn't move onto Apple-style watch screens), still manages to "update" their product line with new technologies! I appreciate that.

I bought an LCD watch as long ago as 1977 which actually had tiny beta tubes behind the display for illumination, emitting radiation in the form of light! The radioactive material was tritium I believe. This was permanently on and when new gave an impressively bright soft green glow. The system lasted about 15 years until eventually grew so dim that it couldn't be seen at all and I junked the watch. I hadn't seen anything like that before or since. EDIT - British firm Nite Watches use the technology for face markers on their displays.

Tritium only has a half-life of about twelve years, so it would have to show dimming within a few short years.

Once, while doing some work on my truck, I took my Indiglo Timex off and put it on the dash, and it got pretty hot in the sun. The light barely worked after that, even after a battery change. My Casio W800h-1av got quite hot in much the same manner, and the light still works fine. Pros and cons to each, I guess. Great video!!!!

I have an old ass G-shock that was like 40 bucks. It's 20 years old and the EL backlight still works just fine. No "half-life" issues with that one.

First two watches utilize an incandescent lamp as their back light. I believe FW-110 series utilize such a lamp as well in our current day and age. Good video. EL used to be called fox fire and that was pretty cool.

This video was awesome man. Just ordered a gwm5610 gshock from Amazon and noticed a different backlight and the “el back light” writing on the screen was just printed as “light”. I thought that I got a knock off or something until I saw from the case it was a gwm5610U and I came across this video and one other explaining the recent change in backlights and other small features. Now I’m not so worried, relieved actually.

Very informative video. I remember when I was a kid wondering how they were able to stick a light so small in the watch. I wasn’t aware of electroluminescent fading over time. I’ve got a small collection of G-Steel watches and I like how the led panels are also backlit. I also enjoy the cool blue/purpleish color and how it reflects in the interior of the watch. All the shining that all it really stands out and looks really cool. I get a lot of interest and compliments on those watches. In fact, no one has ever said oh that’s a really cool Apple Watch, ever. It’s always been the G shocks.

I have a couple of those types of watches, including a G-Steel, and the lights that light up the dial and reflect off the chapter ring are these newer types of LED bulbs, which are very bright. The digital sub-windows are still EL backlit, though.

That Casio Gravitymaster watch with the green-color background on the LCD has a great backlight - one of the best I've ever seen!

I have been wearing a dw5600 for a few years. I just got a gw-5000u. I have no issues with the led. I actually like it a lot.

I had the new GWS5600 ‘U’ version arrive yesterday. I personally like both LED and EL. I think the LED looks better on the GWS5600 as I think it looks more sporty due to it being brighter. The EL backlights are nicer at in total darkness as the light isn’t so bright and harsh.

Yes, the watches are mostly synchronized. I also keep them on cases so they can easily be moved to a room where nobody will be disturbed. But... yes, that opening scene from Back to the Future was so very similar to a movie scene I had imagined a few years earlier.

My older analog Wavecepter has a small LCD window. The backlight is only for the LCD part, whereas the backlight on the newer Waveceptor is only for the analog face. But then my newest analog/digital watches have backlights for both the analog and digital portions.

Hello again Greg. I have noticed that the blue electroluminescent panel backlight on my SKMEI watch is brighter than the blue one on my larger Fossil digital watch. Is the reason for that difference in brightness because the manaufacturer of SKMEI watches puts brighter EL panels in their watches or is the difference in brightness between the two watches' backlights because a SKMEI digital watch has a smaller digital display screen than the larger Fossil digital watches and therefore the EL light is more concentrated into a smaller area on the smaller display screen on the SKMEI watch, resulting in the backlight on the SKMEI watch appearing to be brighter?

Hello I bought a g 9000 because i was amazed by the magnificent blue sky. I receive it. The colors was green, less interesting. I saw others reviews and for the same model, some are with the magnifying blue and the others green. My f105 have the magnificent blue. My qiestion : Do you know why there is this colors changing while it's the same model, same module inside? Is there a link between the battery and its capacity? Brand new battery blue and more the battery fade, more the colors chznge in green slowly?

I don’t know much about tiny lamps but I remember that all backlights on LCD clocks and watches in the late 1970s and well into the 1980s looked about the same. They emit light which is the color of light from incandescent lamps and they’re not very bright. So I just concluded they really are some kind of incandescent lamps. The LEDs from that time didn’t emit that color or, at least, I don’t remember ever seeing any that did.

Informative video. Unfortunately you left out neon illuminator (UV LED?) and compare it to others. Is it because you have none in your collection?

I wonder why would someone use still EL backlights in this day and age of LEDs; EL is the master of all complications,for it works with 150 volts, and also consumes more battery power than LEDs; but paleeese, if on the cheap, use at least 2 LEDs not just one on the side; oh,and in parallel,never in series...

I hear from a handful of guys who simply don’t like the way the LED backlight looks compared to EL. Some of the comments make it sound like these guys are ONLY looking at their watches when they’re in the dark and using the backlight. When someone says something like “The LED makes this a hard pass for me” I don’t understand why it’s THAT big of a deal. As for using one LED from the side instead of dual LEDs… I don’t know what the concern is when they design these things. I suspect one big concern is trying to maintain the same size and shape of previous models. But I really don’t know if that’s going to make the difference between one or more LEDs.

@@GoodTimekeeper IF they put their minds to it,they can do a great job at that; i saw the other day (aliexpress?) a 15 dollar digital watch (skmei 1548?) that has 8 colors of backlight, and also a mode in which them 8 colors flash in sequence by themselves (guess they are also in the batteries business lol); Cars used to have dull and faded dashboards, (they could not just up the old incandescent bulbs watts at will, or the whole shibang would catch on fire...),i am in that field, but now they all have beautiful and very bright and colorful illuminations, due to LEDs; watches should be the same way, taking now advantage of the various colors and powers of led emitters; even if 2 CR20xx batteries were needed,they are less than 50 cents each,and lots and lots of people watch youtube videos and can change them themselves; i have two cheapos ($ 20?) digi/analog, that keep excellent time( but only the digital part, 2 secs/month on the quartz cristal vibrating at those 32768 Hz !!) and they have 2 bats: one,a CR 2025 for the night light and the digital displays,and another one, a small 626 for the hands movements; they actually have 2 separate movements and they show different times; i guess they are good chinese copies of something; the case is actually impeccably chrome plated brass,(i know because i had to re-drill the depth of one of the 1mm lug holes, fot the bracelet pin, lol) and unlike SS, that thing really shines; but at 47 mm and heavy, i don't wear it often around the water, i prefer the Expedition,and the little casios,f91w(lazy light in the corner..) and F105( EL); these are also within 2 secs a month, and with the CR20xx bats, they last and are just amazing for the price,also very easy to make them waterproof with the proper 4 O'rings, a big one and 3 tiny ones; my local watch repairer sells me them cheap,i replace them once in a while, and has tested a few of mine to 10 Bar,in his small compression chamber,no leak,and the front plastic held..

Do you know if an EL can be fixed?

I’ve always wondered about why the backlight choices in some of the watches were made - my Mudmaster has one of those lame LEDs that just light up the 6 o’clock. Not useful! Great collection, Greg!

I'm assuming you own a GWG-1000? I was going to get that model held off from it due the negative display and poorly lit LED light. There post to release new mudmasters this year called the GWG-2000 and lets they fixes the problems with the previous model. That one is a GAW-100. There’s another version of it called the GAS-100. The GAW version has Multiband 6 and the GAS version doesn’t, but is otherwise the same. Unfortunately, the GAW-100 is a little difficult to find at a discount these days but I was able to find one brand new through an eBay seller.

It's like the old neon lights, they use a transformer to boost the volts from 3 to over 150 volts AC,very complicated and ancient system

These electroluminescence layers fade out/get blackened over time. I still got an old alarm bedside clock (over 25 years old now), the same model I've seen in a previous video of yours (anthrazit, radio controlled, getting thin/narrowing to the pusher on top) but with an additional moon phase line. It's still showing the time and everything but when pushing the light on, you can see just a small area/point at the top where a bit of the light is shining through, not enough to see anything in the dark. I wonder if this is fixable but I guess not. Keeping that watch nevertheless though. - Just saw it, mine's an Oregon Scientific too, should watch videos to the End before commenting, nevermind. 😅

I think it's fixable, if that EL layer is replaceable, but I'm not an expert. How long did the backlight of your clock light up strongly? Is it worth buying a watch with this backlight do they last?

Greg can a watch manufacturer replace the electroluminescent device in a watch if the brightness level declines?

Hello Greg. What are the two model numbers of those two small, black, hand-held, bedside, electroluminescent clocks that you show in the this video review of electroluminescent clocks and watches? I think you stated that the square-shaped one is made by Oregon Scientific but you didn't mention the name of the manufacturer of the rectangular-shaped one. Also, the rectangular-shaped one which you say has 2 "hotspots" (LEDs) at the side rather than an EL panel backlight, appears to me to have a combination of EL light and two LEDs because the backlight on that hand-held bedside clock is evenly/uniformly dispersed across the display screen. LED-lit backlights on watches and clocks (such as the Seiko SDGA009 and SDGA003 digital watches) tend to have the drawback of only illuminating well one side of a digital display screen and not the entire display screen uniformly.

Does the EL dim with time (aging) or based on its usage (time with EL on)?

Maybe a little of both. The clocks I have in which EL failed are old but I really didn’t use the EL very often.

Looking for a digital watch that either does NOT have a backlight or the display does not emit blue light so it does not disrupt circadian rhythm at night. Do these types of digital watches exist?

Hi, I've an alarm clock like those Oregon Scientific. It has almost 20 years and has always worked perfectly. The electroluminescent is still ok and is always a lighthouse in the dark and its radiocontrol function is a boon to wake up on time. The only thing I don't like is its shape... too much comic.

1:03 - man, the display module in this watch is clearly installed crookedly. ) I am always afraid of this when unpacking new G-Shocks, because in many copies you can also notice slight distortions. Thank goodness, in my new 5610U, the display module is installed exactly. But about my DW-5600, alas, I can't say that.

That crooked module on the 1985 Casio is my fault. I changed the battery myself and didn’t notice the module was crooked until later. Then I was too lazy to fix it right away. But it will be easy to make it right again.

i had a watch back in the 70's i dont reember the brand but it was always backlit and lasted 6 years i dont what happened to it it was expensive and a gift for being a best man any idea?

I wonder if there is a company which makes luminous (glow in the dark) lcd. I've seen some mods and it looks cool. Any idea why watch manufacturers like casio hesitate to utilize such solution?

The green and blue are warmer and softer, but the other upgrades on the “U” models are worth it to me.

For my use case, back-light doesn't matter unless it is auto. You didn't mention which ones have auto back light.

What's the difference between the Gw5000 and the GMW 5610-1? The price is 200 dollars of difference, but the GW 5000 have different features?

They use the same module so they have the same functions. Some folks like the GW5000 because you just can’t find that exact look (the colors) in the GW-M5610 models. Also, the case of the GW5000 is actually made of stainless steel with a screen-on back similar to a diver’s watch back. Then it’s covered by a resin bezel on the front. The case of the GW-M5610 is resin. Also, the GW-M5610 has a resin band which feels more soft and supple than the ones which come with the GW-M5610s. Is that all worth the extra cost? A lot of folks think so. Some folks declare that as soon as you get it you’ll like it so much that you’ll never regret paying the extra cost. I’m not sure what to advise.

Yes. I have such a clock. It’s no longer made by LaCrosse Technology but you can still buy this model 513-1419bl from Amazon…. www.amazon.com/dp/B01EZ3C7L2/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_NV3TB5006CNQXMVHXQ7A If you want the light to stay on all the time you’ll need to keep the AC adapter connected all the time. So if you hang it on a wall you’ll have the wire to contend with, unless you can conceal it behind the clock somehow.

Timex still use the Indiglo technology and yet they use a different form of technology than electro illumine sense of a form of a LED light that display in a brighter blue even Timex is still marketing their LED as Indiglo.

I guess the term Indiglo is their trademark so they can use it to mean the newest thing they offer on the hardware side. It doesn’t have to be electroluminescent unless they call it “electroluminescent”. Just as long as it works I suppose that’s the best news.

@@GoodTimekeeper As you could say if Casio does that even Timex follows I use to have or I have an electro illumine sense watch that is solar powered but then it wore out over time the it keeps tells the time, then seems like a change of battery. Anyway their is also a bunch of companies that made a Mickey Mouse watch, well a traditional Mickey Mouse watch is analog as their was a Japan exclusive Mickey Mouse G-Shock watch, it is digital but what I would expect from Casio is that the MQ24 watch should be released in a Mickey Mouse version.

I returned GW-M5610U and I bought an old EL version. EL is awesome highlighted and this greenish color. Led in the new version is unacceptable to me (light spots).

I just don't like that amber/orange colour... CASIO should use the nicer blues for the new LED versions.

Is EL dangerous in any way from radiation or the phosphorus like substance leaking onto skin? I’m guessing it isn’t. EL replaced the old luminescent radiation issue on wateches. And the only reference I can see to the phosphorus like substance being an issue would be if you were actually making things out of that substance that coated wires or something like that and it was on your skin. And even then, apparently it is only a mild irritant. I’m guessing that it never leaks out of watches onto your skin I’m guessing Casio is not getting rid of EL because of any health dangers, but because of power saving and internal size advantages and the added functionally when lighting up complex G-Shock dials (as in the vid). And of course, as per the video, also the slight fading that can happen over a very long time, but most watches, especially Casios, don’t have that issue , or only have it after like 40 years or something - And maybe only in the indiglo Timex watches might fade more. I can’t see any reference so far on Google that is talking about any health dangers with EL I know overall this question is a ridiculous question about potential health risks or the only other thing I could worry about would be after 50 years one of them starting a fire in a garage or something. And I haven’t found any google search so far that relates any Casio watches to fires. So yeah, kind of a ridiculous and dumb question, but I’m a little bit of a worry wort. And kind of feel now that I can relax and wait with great excitement for my Casio F105W and enjoy its back light at night time that will be way better than my Casio F 91W

I didn't know Christopher Walken was in to watches.

Casio who were so proud of their "Illuminator" ® Electro-luminescent Back light now has a washed out lighting that discourages using the Auto Light feature, as with G5600UE (module 3496) where the Led is very gross, disbalanced, low contrast and doesent fades in and out in a fashion way, only sudden. Meanwhile Skmei producing cheap Casio clones with better, modern and beautiful backlights while the company they pirate so much, cannot offer those features.

Early LEDs dies. My alarm clock's 8 looks like a 6 for the last coup-le of years.

Why? Because they switched to a more efficient and reliable backlight? Is that dumb?

@@GoodTimekeeper -No. And - Yes... :) Where do I start... -I, personally, think they do dumb things, like: -Fake "Titanium watch" - it's painted plastic, only bracelet made of titanium; -Fake "Titanium look" even on real titanium! :) - anodized; -Compass stopped working on my Made in Japan then TotL "extra rugged" Casio PRG-80T watch just after one 2,5 feet fall on concrete floor (not even scratched, BTW) - old heavy Motorola cell phone (not even their extra HD walkie-talkie!) was perfectly fine after accidental drop on concrete from 10 ft! -20 years ago... ; -BL I think was already "adjustable" on mine, if you can call like 2,6? sec duration "light", so I need to press it like 3 times to see anything besides HH and MM, on pretty complicated watch! Why not to make also options of say 5, 7 and 10 sec BL? -On those new-updated watches, why not produce them with all varieties and combinations - different designs, BL, metal or plastic, bracelets or straps etc? -Why they're not making some smart-watches like Samsung or at least fitness trackers, or even some of their old and once great unique watches - with tiny games, Remote Controls, Radios etc? -Once they made nice watches with silent vibro-alarm - which is absolutely perfect for wrist watch! -Not anymore... And list goes on and on!.. :(

Well, that’s a long list of issues. I think my general reaction is that things like full-metal titanium cases ARE available in Casio’s premium lines like Lineage, Edifice and Oceanus. And they just barely released the new modules for “U” watches so, in time, I would expect more options for the watches which will use them. As for smart watches, they DO have fitness-oriented products. But, since they don’t also make phones (like Apple and Samsung) I’m not expecting them to make things exactly comparable to Samsung watches. Meanwhile, I have decided that the general lines of Wave Ceptors and G-Shocks remind me of something along the lines of a Toyota Corolla in the automotive world. They’re not very fancy and people might never find them valuable in the long run BUT they’re affordable, efficient and the maintenance is generally easy. You can run them into the ground and then turn around and get another one many years later without spending a ton of money. Can you tell that I drive a Corolla? The first one lasted 19.5 years snd 400,000 miles and the second one still seems like new after 10 years. It’s not a Lexus but it gets me where I want to be. I generally don’t have a lot to complain about with Casio as you do. Over the last 36 years I’ve been pretty satisfied with the 80-or-so Casios I’ve purchased. Perhaps they won’t go bankrupt until after I’m dead and can’t keep buying their watches.

@@GoodTimekeeper As probably a norm, most hurtful relations with those you really care about, so - don't get me wrong! -I like Casio company a lot, especially their great old, unique and extremely innovative old watches, calculators and music instruments! I wish them well and also hope they will continue to make great stuff for affordable prices! I just don't agree with your attitude - "They're GREAT CASIO, so surely they know what's right for me!".. ;) -And once, my pretty wealthy ex-boss was driving for way too long past due car's intended lifetime his beloved Toyota Tercel... -It took me all my skills and knowledge to persuade his wife to make him exchange this outdated unkillable wheelbarrow for modern and safe Honda CRV... :))

Sometimes there will be a dead or “hot” pixel which is only apparent when the camera is set to a very high gain setting. I think that’s what you’re seeing there.
