My RC clocks have not synchronized with WWVB for months now. They used to be reliable. Even my commercial receiver cant pick up WWVB. It was reported that they had problems with one of their antennas.

I completely understand wanting supreme accuracy in a watch. Many years ago, I worked in radio. Coordinating local commercials, etc. with national syndications was very important, so accuracy was key. Around 30 years later, and that need for accuracy has stuck with me.

We have the same mindset. I’m not spending over a $1,000 on a single watch. I did my research and sub thousand dollar watches can’t easily compete with a Rolex thanks to modern manufacturing processes, wide availability of materials, and great quality control.

Is that a counterfeit? The date field is light colored on the yellow one like the rest of the face. I've been told the real ones have the shaded date field.

The phase modulation utilized by the UltrAtomic clock was added to the WWVB signal in 2012 and is backward compatible to clocks and watches that use an envelope detector. The vast majority of clocks do use an envelope detector to demodulate the signal and were unaffected. Very few clocks used a synchronous demodulator, which improves performance in weak signal areas. These clocks were rendered obsolete unless modified. The UltrAtomic clock must use a synchronous demodulator to recover phase modulation. These clocks are not "atomic" clocks. I prefer to call them "radio controlled". They are ordinary quartz clocks which run on their own and make a time correction once a night on nights when they receive a strong enough WWVB signal. WWVB encodes the time from NIST's atomic clocks. One question I have is whether the UltrAtomic clock is backward compatible to the AM only signal. There are a number of smart phone apps that emulate the WWVB signal, but I really doubt if any of them include phase modulation. The audio signals in a smart phone are generated digitally and the analog signal comes from a D/A converter. The maximum frequency that can be programmed is something like 20 kHz. To generate the WWVB carrier frequency of 60 kHz, the software must generate a subharmonic and depend on the D/A converter to have enough distortion to create sufficient power at the desired harmonic for the watch or clock to recover the signal and time data. To emulate the phase modulation, the smart phone would need to calculate both bit codes and adjust the phase of the subharmonic correctly to produce 180° phase shifts in the 60kHz harmonic. Anyway, there are people in weak signal areas, particularly the east coast, who use the smart phone apps to set radio controlled clocks. There was concern that Federal budget cuts would force WWVB to shut down and all these radio controlled clocks would be left without a time signal. Then, emulators would be needed to synchronize all radio controlled clocks. As I write this, due to storm damage, WWVB is operating on a reduced power of 30 kW instead of 70 kW. The repairs are taking over a month. A more severe storm could knock WWVB off the air altogether and we could be without its signal for an extended time period. On the leaking battery issue, shango066 is very critical of Duracell. My understanding is that no AA or C cell is leak proof. When I was young, some manufacturers guaranteed their batteries against leaking. If their batteries leaked in a flashlight, you could send it to them and they would send you a new flashlight with batteries. I knew several people who got new flashlights that way. In reality, the batteries were not really leakproof and the manufacturers took a calculated risk. Back then, consumer lithium batteries did not exist. Alkaline batteries were introduced in that time frame.

No wonder so many people are fans of it. I put together a little clip in its honor. :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooag2ttupNzTlLg.html

It's not your imagination. The old batteries didn't last as long as they do now. However, I like to use the Energizer lithium primary call. They have the same voltage as alkaline cells. They will source more currect for longer than alkaline batteries. I have never seen one leak though. They have a shelf life of 20 years, lately moved up to 25 years. These are more expensive, but I find they are worth the money for me, and I've never had to clean after one. I recently found your channel and enjoy watch your work.

I live in Ottawa Canada on the 11th floor of an apartment building. My older Lacrosse atomic clock wouldn't pick up the signal. It used to pick up the signal at ground level at a different location in Ontario province. Then I tried the Energizer lithium primary cell which has a cell voltage of 1.7v and the clock started to pick up the signal. Manufacturer should recommend Energizer lithium primary cell which never leaks like the alkaline or heavy duty types. As you mentioned the long shelf life and more capacity to boot. Mine is running for 3 years now but haven't checked the battery voltage though.

Not sure if you'll see this but thanks for this video! Recently picked up this watch as a nice daily wear, and was surprised when it didn't have a timer function. I thought that it was so simple, other newer Casio watches must have one. And through searching, I stumbled upon this. Not only was my hunch right, but this module has it too and was just arbitrarily locked out of the mode! Couple minutes later, now it has the one function I wanted added. Thanks a million!

Congratulations Greg. That watch is so special. A piece of engineering marvel and testament to Seiko’s century old capabilities. Oh Greg! I hope you don’t get caught by the Seiko bug. There’s no getting out of that. The history of dive watches, the first in so many things, the tuna shape, the willards, ao many movie references. The first quartz watch was also a Seiko. The TV watch, and so many other models, which were later worked as the inspiration for Casio and others. Good luck 😉

Another bad joke fom Casio and further proof they've lost their marbles. A 60 timer? seriously? No ability (again) to set the date for DD/MM? But hey, give me lots of unnecessary crap instead, call it "smart" and make a fortune...I truly wonder what idiots are working at Casio, their decisions become more and more erratic.

I've had a GW-2310 for years. It usually receives a time signal from WWVB in Colorado at night here in California, though in April 2024 the Colorado signal has weakened due to antenna wind damage that will be repaired by about the end of June. These very low frequency signals are weak and best received at night. This watch is on the large side but very lightweight due to the resin construction. With 9 years of use the battery is still going though it seems to take more light to charge than my other solar watches. Recently tried one of the inexpensive LED solar watch 'chargers' and that really gets the battery full. Rugged, lightweight, large, accurate and easy to read with many features, a great watch for action or activities that put other watches at risk.

I recently did a Caution Yellow (GA-B2100CY ) ìin a black case, love the original Casio look but I don't do plastic or resin or whatever. I did consider the GM-B2100 but it's very shiny and I prefer the Caution Yellow dial (would have preferred a positive digital display) I still might get one and apply a brushed finish, but for now I'm enjoying the black stainless Caution Yellow.

In my late 20s (2019) my Baby G Casio finally died. Instead of replacing the battery, I got an Apple Watch since I was alone a lot and have had heart surgery and dizziness that sometimes can result in a little stumble which is embarrassing for a former first responder who is so young. It's a way for me to feel independent. Now all of this being said, I have turned off 90% of the notifications due to it becoming annoying and draining the battery. I feel I have a phone addiction so there are times that I will leave my cell phone behind and just bring the watch with me since I have a $10 a month cellular smart watch plan. I am concerned I'm addicted to the watch and knowing my heart BPM and daily steps. I get anxiety if I forget my Smartwatch at home and I do not like the hold it has on me. I could go either way with the smartwatch thing, maybe only wear it when going on a trip or when I know I won't have any family or friends around me that day. I bought Apple watches for my parents after one of them had a minor fall and they seem to enjoy it and are not addicted to it or annoyed by it like I am. I live 100 miles away from them. One helped my mom detect an arrythmia that required immediate medical attention. They're baby boomers and I'm a millennial so perhaps the tech dependence differences are generational. I need to find middle ground with my Apple products. I miss the days of my old Nokia phone, Baby G witchy watch, and Nintendo 64 (also no health problems). Rant incoming: The iPhone has replaced my iPod, calculator, calendar/planner, computer, GameBoy, MapQuest, digital camera, and more. So I am not sure if I'm spending too much time on the phone if I were to tally up the time spent on each of those things since I do not use social media or have any of those apps installed on it. Regardless I know my phone has decreased my human interaction time which is a major negative for me. What are your opinions on the radiation output levels of phones?

thanks. I thought the multi band picked up more than one station in the USA. (didn't know there is just one) SO, no reason to get the 200R-3ACF. The 58 with metal case and band that is incoming is all I need. Tho I might get a solar version "someday" as well. QUESTION: If I ever visit Canada, does the single band work there as well?
