Drat! I've always had issues with word problems and this one was no different. I was trying to solve this by a system and didn't see that it could be solved by a single variable. Please keep giving the challenging ones - by the grace of God I'll be able to do these one day if I live long enough.
Three dimes plus a quarter = 55 cents. 55 goes into $5.50 ten times. Therefore, 30 dimes and 10 quarters.

Ha, I skipped most of the babble and got to that part too..lol This could have been explained in 2 minutes or less. Idk why teachers feel the need to babble during their lecture with filler words.

That's exactly how I solved it as well. No calculator necessary! I call it the "stack method".
I never learned anything like this in high school. I'm so glad to see it here. Once you've been ripped off in life, you learn this stuff tge hard way!
Nice little problem! Comes down to this: Converting everything to cents and having 'X' being the number of quarters we have: 3X(10) + X(25) = 550 Now solving for 'X' we have: X(30 + 25) = 550 X = 550/(30 + 25) X = 550/55 X = 10 Thus, 10 quarters with the number of dimes being 3 times that which is 30.
MR. TabletClass Math thank you for a classic solution to another Algebra Word Problem.
N = quarters, 3N = dimes 25n + 3*10n =5.50 55n = 5.50 N= 10, So 10 quarters = $2.50 Plus 30 dimes = $3.00 Together equal $5.50
The first step is to set up the equation. Since 3q is the number of dimes, then 0.1 times 3Q gives us the total value of the dimes. So 0.1(3q) is our first expression. Now, since the number of quarters is missing, we let q be the number of quarters. Since a quarter is 25 cents, then 0.25 times q is the value of the quarters. If we addup these two values the resulting value should be 5.5. So the complete equation would look like this: 0.1(3q)+0.25q = 5.5 To solve this equation, we must distribute 0.1 to 3q. 0.1 times 3q is 0.3q. Now, since 0.3q and 0.25q are like terms, we can add then together. 0.3q+0.25q is 0.55q So now we would have the following equation. 0.55q = 5.5 To make our job easier, we can multiply 0.55 by 100 and 5.5 by 100 (Remember the rule for equality of an equation?) As a result, we would have 55q = 550. Now divide both sides by 55 and we have q is equal to 10. Since the number of quarter is 10, and we also know that the number of dimes is three times the amount of quarters, we can multiply 10 by 3 to get 30. Thus, the answer to this question is 10 quarters and 30 dimes (totaled 40 coins). I hope you enjoyed my explaination. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
I didn't use an equation, but was pretty quickly able to come to 10 quarters ($2.50) and 30 dimes ($3.00). Let's have the equation!
Sometimes you just have to read the question carefully. You have 3 dimes for every 1 quarter and 'surprise surprise' ... 3 dimes and 1 quarter = 55 cents and so 30 dimes and 10 quarters will make €5.50
30 dimes 10 quarters
I actually had to use algebra to tell the cashier how I wanted my bus money. For instance, at one time the bus cost 2.75 here and I had a 10 dollar bill in my pocket, so now I gave to tell how many of each one I want. Only one dollar coins and quarters were available at the time.
i protest the use of the word "than" in this problem statement. It should say "You have three times as many dimes as quarters" or less desirably "You have three times the number of dimes as quarters" to make it clear it's the ratio of quantities. "Than" should be reserved for phrases indicating addition, e.g., "you have 20 more dimes than quarters."

I don't understand. You can figure out these problems in your head within 30 seconds. Why all the hoopla involving a 11 minute explanation on how to get the correct answer?

30 dimes, 10 quarters...
It’s 1 is to 3, 1:3 every $1 = 10 dimes or 4 quarters. So, $1=10 dimes + $1=10 dimes + $1=10 dimes total of 30 dimes right?! The remaining $2 dollars convert it into Quarters, and in every $1=4 Quarters, so, $2=8 Quarters, to complete the five dollars right? But there’s still $0.50 equivalent to 2 Quarters. It’s now, 30-dimes and 10-Quarters,,…so, $3=30 dimes and $2.50=10 Quarters. Or simply 10:30 or 1:3

That's because he skipped a step. It's actually two equations solved simultaneously. .25x + .10y = 5.0, y=3x. Now substitute. Multiply and gather terms. Solve for x. Then multiply by 3 to get y.

Or if you just try 10 quarters you know that’s 2.50… you need 3 dollars in dimes to make 5.50 so it’s 30 dimes. Of course this is basic problem and that method can’t be used with more complex problems
Also, solved by a blind folk who does not even know what 1+1 is. If you may, I can help you grow your channel.
you missed something. since nobody corrected you, i have to, .10(3x)=.30x, and not .3x cents since if you add .25+.3x=28x, and not .55x. good luck.

I think YOU must be missing something! You wrote .25+.3x=28x. I assume you meant .25X+.3X=.28X. Well, 0.25 + 0.3X is certainly not 0.28X which is what you stated! Where I come from, 0.25 + 0.30 = 0.55
