Let’s Read and Understand a Poem: “In An Artist’s Studio” by Christina Rossetti

Today we will look at a sonnet by the 19th century poet, Christina Rossetti. It’s called ‘In an Artist’s Studio’, and has a connection with the visual arts and painting. I’ll go through the poem in detail, explaining the meaning and looking at some technical aspects such as rhyme, structure, form, and alliteration. I hope you find it interesting. I’ll also give you some background information on Christina Rossetti, her brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his wife Elizabeth Siddal. For more information, and to see some of the paintings, go to: editions.covecollective.org/c...

Thanks Gill for the incredible video. The line: That mirror gave back all her loveliness I think mirror here is a metaphor for canvas because mirrors never lie and reflect your image as you are. Only a canvas with the help of an artist can give back her long-lost beauty. The model in the poem has left behind her youth and the artist has done his best to defy time and its pulverizing force.

Gil, you give so much enlightment to us, I truly want to hug you, thank you very much ma'am. Here in Brazil, we have popular poets called 'cordelistas' ('cordelists', maybe in English, I guess) and they say that when the phrase ends with a not precise semi vowel that the poem has the 'broken foot' - that poem is made with a 'broken foot' rhym. That also occuors when the poem don't fallows exatally the sylabic metric. But, those poems have beauty and porpuse too in their own way. Ah, just a tiny contribution: a sestet is composed by two tercets. Sorry for any error in that writting.

When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget. I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain; I shall not hear the nightingale Sing on, as if in pain: And dreaming through the twilight That doth not rise nor set, Haply I may remember, And haply may forget.

Well probably there was a mirror just to enhance her body, multiply the image or give light to the canvas. We have to be aware that glass, mirror or metal was used throughout the history of painting in order to show the reflection of self portraits and painting. In one of the picture of the Dutch painter Vermeer (the anonimous art genius) we can see the reflection of the girl taken music lessons.

Ma'am,i feel, this poem has some resemblance with the poem 'My Last Duchess' by Robert Browning, though that is not a sonnet, but the subject of the poem is almost the same ! Thank you so much !😃
