Learn 13 English IDIOMS from the theatre

The great English playwright Shakespeare famously wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” It is true that life is like a theatre play, isn’t it? And in fact, there are plenty of expressions we use that are related to theatre language but mean other things. In this lesson, I will introduce you to a variety of idioms and metaphors from the world of theatre which are used in everyday life. You will learn the meaning of “to upstage someone”, “break a leg”, “hard act to follow”, “to make a song and dance”, “to be in the limelight”, and more. These expressions are commonly used by native English speakers. Let’s get the show on the road!

Efforts being the operative word here. Something I have noticed too, the effort she makes to make us undesrtand things is very admirable. As someone who has never been to a theatre - this is very helpful.

I love her. Her accent, her voice, her light English sense of humour I detect here and there. In some odd way, Gill doesn't even seem all that foreign to me, although her accent at first did: I didn't know what or where it was from. I guess I always had the idea English people spoke what I had learnt at school which was RP. I used to have an English penfriend back in the days when people sent letters to each other. I also had American penpals. They were so simple, straightforward and boring, whereas with my English West Midlands penpal I could actually have fun and give and take little tender "insults". A bit of irony or sarcasm here and there, things like that. She taught me a great deal and I am for ever grateful. (I'm Finnish, a Finn from Finland.)

Dear Gill-sensei, thank you for your theatre idiom lesson. It is always with great joy that I come to your youtube videos. I appreciate the quotation from Shakespeare. I sometimes wonder why I love pessimistic lines like this one so much. Come to think of it, many songs, lyrics, poems, novels etc. are both pessimistic and attractive. " Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player , that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and is heard no more."
