Queen Elizabeth II - My Thoughts and Memories

In this video I’m sharing a few of my own personal thoughts and memories of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died in early September 2022 after a long, 70-year reign. I also discuss some of the different ways in which the Queen and the monarchy have been viewed in the UK over the last several decades. www.engvid.com/queen-elizabet...
During the video, I mention two videos which show the Queen’s sense of humour. Here are the links to those:

Even for me, a person who's never lived in the UK, it was such a sorrowful, heartbreaking news. Her Majesty's portrait has always been hanging in the English class along with the map of England and portraits of other distinguished British people. Since very little I used to perceive The Queen as an irreplaceable symbol of British culture. Also, even though I'm a child of the 2000s, I've heard a lot about the efforts Her Majesty put towards building diplomatic relations between Russia and Britain, especially in a tough period for Russia after the Soviet Union. Many people who were lucky enough to have a talk with her note how courteous and attentive she was. She is definitely remembered here for her immaculate manners, amiability and truly British sense of humour.

Queen Elizabeth visited Russia in October 1994, met President Yeltsin, attended state reception at Kremlin and then spent a day or two in St Petersburg, including The Hermitage. Chatted to Russian schoolchildren studying English. This was the first ever visit of any British monarch to Russia. Previously she met Gorbachev (who died just a week before the Queen did) in London. Prince Philip went to USSR (Kiev) in 1973, first ever royal visit to Soviet Union. He called communists ‘the bastards that killed half of my family’ (in 1918). Anglo-Russian relations were the best in 1890-1917 when Nicholas II paid many visits to Britain and British royals to Russia, then in 1941-1945 when we had one common enemy, and finally in 1985 during Gorbachev/Thatcher and Yeltsin era. Putin came with state visit to UK in 2003 and it looks like he genuinely liked everything including the Queen. I doubt the Queen ever liked him. Or Russia. Or Germany. As many Brits she thought that Russians cannot be trusted. Despite sincere anglophilia many Russians had then and some still have now.

Dear Gill, you are one of the best teacher all over the world! Thank you so much for all your lessons and efforts! I bring my sincerest and deepest condolences for you and for all the people of the United Kingdom. I have so many words and epithets to describe my current emotions. But it is hard to express them fully. The last days have been really hard to me too. In some moments when I recall the image of Queen Elizabeth my heart was getting broken. Her Majesty will be missed for the rest of our life. I remember when I've heard about her the very first time. It was my 2nd year of the ground school here - in faraway Russia. My English teacher told us about the Queen. It was about 17 years ago. Since then I observed news about the Royal Family and listened to Queen's statements many times. I wasn't able to imagine this world without Her Majesty. She inspired us so much just only by her presence. She was beautiful woman and remained her beauty all her life💔🥀

I always enjoyed the Michael Bond series , as a little girl. It is a shame that people have to protest the monarchy at such a sad time. I think the royal family is important , as a representative of living British history. It is true , that their family was not perfect. But , I hope I will live to see Catherine on the throne --- She will be a very beautiful and kind hearted Queen. 🌹

I'm definitely against monarchy but I always respected and even adored Elizabeth as a person because she took her job very very seriously and without bitterness although - I'm sure - she would have preferred another sort of life... very much like her father who didn't want to be king, either. Just imagine: never being alone, never doing just what you want... so sad

Dear Gill, my deepest condolences to all the UK people on the death of the Queen. She is truly the legend! During my school years I have learned a lot about the Royal Family, we had it in our English language class program as the key feature of the UK culture, the heritage. I visited UK (London and Scotland) in 1999 but unfortunately had no chance to see Her Majesty, so sorry I never will. Indeed, she was the only Queen we all had, I personally felt like she would live forever. What I would like to say, here abroad we know very little bit about the people of this family as persons. With great pleasure I watched "The Crown" series in original language, digging out compatibilities in the internet, between the series and reality. The overall impression of the Royal Family, gained from the series, makes fall in love and deepest respect to Her as a person and as a leader.

Dear Ma'am Gill, I have watched and lisented to your speech on the Late Queen Elizabeth, the second, who has passed away very recently. She was one of the oldest monarchs, and had reigned for such a long period, and was like a mother to the entire nation ! It was very nice to hear your childhood memories with your mother, having gone to see the Queen ! Though,as a child, when we read fairy tales and know about Kings and Queens our mind creates a picture that fascinates us so much but as we grow older,we feel that being the King and Queen is not an easy job ! It requires a lot of courage,a great deal of patience and a sense of responsibilty to shoulder this tough job ! Though these qualities are necessary for all those people as well, who want to be successful in any field they choose for themselves ! Ma'am Gill,i am very much inspired by the way you have shaped your life as a professor ! Thank you very much !😃

Hi! I'm from Argentina. I really liked Queen Elizabeth and I feel sorry about her death. I always watch videos about her and what I admire most is the way she treated people. I'll miss her!

Hello GILL I myself felt great sadness to know that the queen passed away. Although I don't live in England. And I followed all the ceremonies for her memory. I was very excited .
