Let's Play Wizardry NES Part 1: Grounds for Proving

Ойындар

It's back! I've decided to revisit this series since the DOS Wizardry video has gotten such a positive response, and it only took me two years! I really hope you enjoy this look at Wizardry 1 for the NES, played with the immense help of Grid Cartographer. You can expect these videos to appear once a week and last about 30-45 minutes, with some wiggle room for the schedule and duration. Please let me know what you think! I always appreciate your kind and thoughtful feedback. :)

This version is why, decades later, I thought the original had 8-bit audio/music.

While you cannot create a Ninja that isn't evil, there *is* a way to obtain one that can run with a Good party. In the deepest bowels of the labyrinth, there exists a dagger that, when equipped by a rogue, will transform him into a Ninja. Thus if you have a Neutral Thief, he becomes a Neutral Ninja. Ninjas can equip nearly any weapon in the game, and have a pretty low AC even without equipping any armor. I typically run with two Fighters (or a Fighter and Samurai, if you use an Elf you can make a Samurai during character creation if you have 15 or more bonus points), a Thief, a Cleric, and two Mages. I also typically make a Wizard (an Elf can pretty trivially become a Wizard, or Bishop in the original Mac/PC game) for identification purposes but don't take them with me. They do learn both realms of magic, but slower than either a Cleric or a Mage. I generally find higher level spells to be more useful, at least until you learn all 7th level spells. You get your spell slots back resting in the inn. You have a healing spell on your cleric. So the only peole who *needs* to rest in the inn are the casters, barring level-ups.

God I remember playing the original version way back when on an Apple 2+. 5 1/4" floppy disk. There was a bug where you force the bishop to identify item#9 and he would eventually successfully identify it and he receives 100000000 xp. You could level up to like level 60 and get all the hp and stats you wanted. Then you could change class to anything you wanted and keep all your hp. I dont think they kept that in the new versions.

A Grid Cartographer tutorial on how to set this up would be great. I bought it on sale and fumbled around with it in frustration, then ended up refunding it. I'm assuming you need to select an emulator on their site, load up a ROM and create windows for everything you want, but it's daunting with no instructions given.

I appreciate that feedback and can def see how it would be frustrating to set up at first as it does take a little fiddling. Yeah you do need an NES emulator and the Wizardry 1 ROM, and I unfortunately can't tell you how to find ROMs. But Grid Cartographer does have instructions on how to play the game inside the app using the FCEUmm emulator here: docs.gridcartographer.com/gamelink/emu/fceumm. That should be enough to get you started, I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

@@NickBurnham1 Hey, thanks for the tips and the link. Maybe I'll try again when it goes on sale again. I actually had all the Wizardry games on NES and SNES, and even beat Knight of Diamonds which was quite an accomplishment. I sold the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and about 50 games in mint condition with boxes and manuals for $200 at a garage sale. I later learned that just one game alone was an original with a bug that was redistributed and was worth many hundreds of dollars. Big regrets!

Hmm... super lame that you have to buy Grid Cartographer, unless i'm missing something. Really want to give this setup a whirl but I don't know if I'll just give it up in five minutes or really get into it. Not worth $20 without a trial... I can't find any "free" versions either.

Ok, so for people who may have the same issue... get something called "Where Are We?" www.eskimo.com/~edv/lockscroll/WhereAreWe/ It seems a bit less flexible, and doesn't seem to let you map by yourself, but it automaps, which I kind of think is better. You can be cheap and have it show the full map right from the start, or show the full map greyed out until you explore, or have total darkness except for what you've already explored, as if you're mapping it on your own. Still testing and learning, but seems great so far. Works with regular Dosbox and gives a bunch of in-game info too. Pretty cool. And free.

That is a bummer. :/ I will say, for me, I think it's totally worth at least the $20 for the Gamer Edition if all you want to do is play with CRPGs. It makes a ton of old games a lot more approachable.
