Let's Play! Thunder at Dawn: The Battle of Wilson's Creek (Tutorial Playthrough)

This is a tutorial and one-turn playthrough of the hex and counter American Civil War (ACW) wargame Thunder at Dawn: The Battle of Wilson's Creek (August 10, 1861). Designed by Claude Whalen, it is published by Revolution Games. It utilizes the Blind Swords chit-pull rule set, originally designed by Hermann Luttmann, making it very solitaire friendly.

    One of the most beautiful boardgames I've seen, and not limiting the comparison to wargames. More games should go for an actual trompe-l'oeil. I feel like anyone would stop to check this game out.

    @@WayneHansen Would you recommend this one or Pea Ridge? I currently have Longstreet Attack. I have read through the rulebook and am going to do the introductory scenario this evening. However I'm worried I picked the one with most counter density (Round Top scenario aside) and maybe I should explore the system with a smaller game first. You've said this is the best intro one, but all around do you like this or Pea Ridge more? I'm leaning toward this one because of the better looking scenario rulebook and the single map sheet.

    I believe Pea Ridge and Stonewalls Sword have fewer counters, so if you want the smallest maps and fewest counters, you can try either one of those. However, I do feel that Wilsons Creek has such a good map and rulebooks (game and series) that it's a great choice. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the games.

    Wayne, I’ve been happily subscribed for some time now. This was a tremendous tutorial! I sent it to my son so he can get a full understanding of this game before we play long distance next week. His first attempt at war gaming so this will be great for him! Excellent play through! Thanks!

    Good detailed play through. I think I might pick this game up as a good way to learn the system. I am getting H. Luttman's game on Gettysburg which I backed on Kickstarter. Hope all is well with you Wayne as it has been a while since your last video.

    I can definitely recommend it. I am OK, just taking a break from videos. A lot of things going on in the personal life and was feeling a little burned out. Don't worry, I'll definitely be back!

    Fantastic job, thank you very much. I already have 4 system games but haven't messed with them much yet. I'm missing these last two from Revolution. I have the doubt if they will continue releasing games with the system, which I understand they will, or if we will only see the Black Swan variant from the other publisher.

    My pleasure Alberto. It is a great series. I know there are several Blind Swords games coming, I do not know about this system.

    Hi, really good videos to learn system. Some people says than it's impossible for one side to win due to unbalance historical scenario. Do you think it is still a good 2 player game or could be "booring" for opposite side?

    I'd like to know who these people are. I do believe it would be an excellent 2 player game. I have to be honest, during playtesting I only played it solitaire, but I had no problem trying different strategies for each side and achieving victories with either the Union or Rebels.

    These 2 new games have really low counter density. Is map necessary for being that big? Dont know about this battle at all

  • @WayneHansen

    @WayneHansen

    Yes. The Union forces start at both the north edge (General Lyon's force) and south edge (Colonel Sigel) of the map, owing to their attempt to catch the Confederates between them. If the map had been smaller, you wouldn't have the true area that the battle covered or where the units maneuvered.

    Got the misimpression that Blind Swords was a solitaire system. Chit/card pull is (probably) necessary for solitaire play but doesn't guarantee it. When I saw it was "Now I'm the Union. Now I'm the Confederates" over and over, I lost interest. Good effort, Wayne, but I need a bot at the very least.
