Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

I can see there is a lot of pressure to put out content that is new and different and whatnot but honestly I am just thankful you take us along for the ride with your collage process and thoughts so I don’t need a theme or something different every time, I’d even be happy to watch you making the space scenes! I just want to say I really appreciate the time you spend editing and thinking and narrating your videos, they are a pleasure to watch

Well said!
My dad and beloved corgi have recently passed, your collages have inspired me. Think I'll incorporate dreams ive had of them into a visual surreal dream journal, but with pictures of them.
I love what you do, and you certainly don’t need to come up with a gimmick as far as I’m concerned. Your art amazes me, and when you voice your thoughts at the beginning, I always think ‘how is that going to work?’, because I just can’t see it. That’s where your talent lies……being able to ‘see’! I always especially like your underwater scenes, however, both turned out great in this video. Just keep sharing your talent….it’s so fun!

Thank you!! I even surprise myself sometimes!
You don't always have to make anything in particular. Rosie, you can just gather supplies and do whatever while filming. Keep up the great work. Whenever I am stuck for collage inspiration, I use idioms as prompts.
Two for one! Love both, needed some "fantasy " on an otherwise horrible day. Thanks for being here. 🤗
I’m so happy I found your channel! I’ve been making collages off and on for over 10 years and you’ve inspired me to share my work and process on the internet! You’re amazing at what you do, I’m so excited to see what you do next. 💘💘
Hi Rosie - Please don't worry about always having a gimmick. Just have fun and let the art come together. Your vision and artistry is always interesting and worth watching!!
i just love how your brain works, finding images and combinations that fit together, even though they're mad as heck.... 😄 tnx for coming up with all of these!! your vids make me smile every time
Thanks for taking the time to make your videos!
Love the fish in the house. I use fish in my collages at least once a day. Lol. There is so much you can do with them. I aggravate everyone I know for fish books. Lol.
Hey Rosie! I love how this one turned out. It has a very 60s vibe, and you did great with the colour tones!
Love your channel and the work you do on it. You say every video has to have a gimmick... Wondered if you could do a video for beginners like me on the little tricks you use to keep your collages clean. Technique for cutting, pasting down wrinkle-free, etc. Thanks for all you do.

Love this idea! Adding it to the list :)
I applaud you for finding topics again and again on such a niche art subject. That is a ton of work. I like doing different things all the time and am not good at repetition. I am always impressed by what you come up with. Really inspiring.

Yeah--I agree! It ended up working out really well.
Love, love, love the goldfish collage, Rosie. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I enjoy your videos so much! No gimmicks needed! I enjoy watching your process and seeing the end result. 🥰💕
I love how You make Collages! You are so Talented and so much fun to watch !!
Your creativity is off the charts! I love your work so much! 🤗💜
One of the things I really appreciate about you and your channel is there not being the “gimmicks/hype, etc.”. You are so naturally creative and being able to follow along with your process is a real treat and gift! I hope you will allow yourself to acknowledge that being you, the way you are, is great (and enough!) and you don’t need a gimmick or something more. Just be yourself, open up the books and magazines and let it happen - it’s always fun! Thanks! Kathleen

Awwww thank you so so so much for the kind words.
Love that goldfish "pond"!!
I loved the fish collage! I was looking for collage inspirations and I found your videos, I really like your style and relaxed approach - and the end results turn out really great, such an awesome way to let out creativity!
Rosie I completely understand but I think we just like to see what you come up with. You could even revisit some videos, like your dollar store video. Just switch up what you use. Or maybe the challenge type videos you have done where you can only use items from 1 source. You are great at what you do and we all like to watch. No need to reinvent the wheel every time. Love the embroidery very cool! Thank you for all your hard work. 💕Amy

You're right--lots of good ideas to jump off of! So glad you enjoy the process :)
I just stumbled onto your channel. I love your concept of recreating scenes from already existing pictures. Oddly enough I enjoy fussy cuttings. I can’t draw would love to but it’s frustrating because so much time is needed to get better at it. Fussy cutting is just mindless fun. I’m new to collaging mixed media and art journaling. I’m trying several different techniques hoping to find my style. Oddly enough you solved my dislike for stitching on paper. BIG DUH🤪 poke the pattern of holes first 😏 I do this all just for fun. Not for profit. It’s a hobby for my mental health. I enjoy your style 🤗 TFS
LOVE THE FISH COLLAGE!!!
Yeah rosey!! Two great ideas. I just finished cutting out a collage. It contains a polar bear escaping icebergs because of global warming. And the bottom third are desert and African animals roaming the land. I love it. You are always an inspiration to me.

Love this! Sounds like an amazing piece. I'm so happy I can bring you a little bit of inspiration :)
I love how your brain works.
Fantastic imagination and inspiration. Thanks so much for sharing your skills.
Love love the fish collage!!!
I'm super excited. I made a point today. I will review your points when I get done trying to make sense of the language of the one subject I have no desire to learn. the art of pick ups.
obsessed with the fish one!
Hi Rosie! I love watching your videos, no matter the topic or "gimmick" of the collage. I love checking your channel every Thursday to see your new video! One idea that I've had but couldn't quite figure out how to explain is to used flat backed marble to make collages on! I'm not sure the exact name for them, but I've seen them be called "Dragon's Tears" or "Mancala stones". You can usually find a mesh bag with quite a few of them at the dollar store. Someone who I know that likes to collage has made tiny collages and then glued them onto the flat side of the flat glass marble, and then glued a magnet to it to make her own little fridge magnets! I have also seen people use those flat marbles to make pendants, so that might be neat if that's something you'd be interested in too! Hopefully that explanation made sense! Thank you for sharing your work, you've inspired me to take up collaging as well!
Great video. They turned out fabulous. Thanks for sharing.
Do what makes your heart happy and brings peace in your life, not all the fretting and worrying about “gimmicks”.. I enjoy your perspectives and collages.
You are an amazing artist thank for inspiring me!
So enjoyable watching you work!
Yeah, if life had gimmicks it would be a lot easier, but you came up with a lot of fun ideas. I like your gumption - very creative.
So much fun to watch you work your magic👏👏👏..💜💜💜💜💜💜
I love all you videos. You have a wonderful creative mind
Love how the one with the fish came out..

I would love a tattoo based on the frist collage. Your creativity is so inspiring.
Another wonderful video !
I subbed to your channel because I thought (and still think) it’s super cool that you have a whole channel dedicated to magazine/book/surreal collages .. I’ve been wanting to make a full video of mine recently .. thanks for the inspiration! Love your art 🖼

I did enjoy this video. =) and I love both collages. =)
Tricky but worth it 👍🏼
I just love what you do. I'm a bibliophile practically from birth. The thought of cutting up books makes me cringe. I'm going to see if I can find a few I can sacrifice to a higher cause. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent

I know that feeling! I find that the books that seem OK to cut up are ones that are obsolete, that it's unlikely anyone would want to read. I was fortunate to find some vintage children's encyclopedias for $1 each at my local used bookstore that I've begun harvesting. Also, magazines are fine to cut up because they weren't made to last anyway and also become obsolete. Current and recent magazines are a good place to start.
Just discovered your videos! Love them. If you wanted your collage to last, would you ever put decoupage on top or some other kind of sealer?
Thank you for the video! Loved it. I really enjoy whatever subject you do so keep up the good work. I found a magazine all about Aliens today and Walmart and it has some awesome pics in it. I don't normally buy any magazines (look for free ones) but I couldn't pass it up.

Your very creative.
Love watching your process and seeing the pictures that inspire your ideas. They are always great. By the way, what do you think about the xacto z series? I've been looking for a new blade and wondered how it works for you in comparison to other blades you've used.

Love the Z series blades! They are definitely more sharp and last longer than the normal xacto blades. I will talk more in a future video!

I really like your collages and sense of humor. Some artists I have to mute to much yapping.
If you know how much I need that particular shape of nature, b/c of being a success story of transit wonder, well then you know I agree with you on all of these 4 ideas So then I took my turn Oh, what a thing to have done And it was all yellow

I really need to try the embroidery sometime -- I thought that would take a long time to do, but didn't appear to take much time. The goldfish picture is great -- you do have a great eye for melding different images into one seamless piece.

You should try it!! Start small for sure. It can definitely be time consuming if you have a big idea, but is such a great additional texture that you can add to a piece.

I don't mind being the bearer of bad news. I can't match up to everybody else. I love you. No gimmick needed. We just want to see what you create.
The sound for this episode is not good. Sorry
Totally love what you said in the intro. Why does everything feel like it has to have a gimmick? Maybe it's our "capitalism on steroids" culture. So over it.
What the heck am I talking about?
I am scared. Can you defeat the monsters? They keep popping up on the page. I think better when I have a little carbon monoxide in my lungs. You are pure salvation to the broken heart. Where is my heart?
