Creating a handmade custom DIY surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design.
Collages made out of paper have a custom made feel that you can't get from a digital collage made in Photoshop. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!
Want to try creating your own? Just grab a magazine, scissors, and a glue stick!

Firstly, love your work! You are so creative and inspirational. I enjoy collage too and find it so relaxing to cut out images, no matter how small or detailed. I've got hundreds cut out and need to start using them instead of searching for more images, which I also find relaxing. I use small curved manicure scissors (curve facing out) as this seems to help keep the edges neat, plus the small points are good to cut away in small spaces. To help remember about stalactites and stalagmites: Stalactites hang tightly to the ceiling, while stalagmites might reach the ceiling. I was told this when I was a kid and have never forgotten it.

I did a Q&A video a few months back! I think I talked about this, but I usually spend between 3-5 hours making each collage for a video. Usually on the same day, but sometimes it's nice to be able to step away from a piece and come back with fresh eyes.

Wow, I love the concept you created with the house. I think it could be really cool to continue this with other images of houses, and other interiors. Being in quarantine has really opened my eyes to the fact that not everyone's home is a comfy and cozy place to feel safe in. However, some homes are filled with love and support. This type of collage art could tell a whole story about a neighborhood and what quarantine looks like inside multiple houses just with imagery. Thanks for inspiring me!

Very satisfying art process. So fun to watch the coming-together. Suspenseful, because (as you say) even you don’t know where it’s going. I ❤ them both, tho I’d more likely put the flower house on my wall. Interesting that the jellyfish and the flowers could be exchanged. I’m imagining the jellyfish in the house. Great video.
