Let's Give This Old Sad S35 Somua A New, Happier Life!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My friends, tonight calls for another rescue project but this time it won't be one of my "restoration" attempts, but rather me trying to save an old shelf queen! And it's not just about finishing this S35 Somua from Tamiya, but also giving her a new life with a more vivid, lively French camouflage.

Also, any late war German tank with factory applied, hard-edged Ambush camouflage can be painted with brushes. It's just the base coat that's ideally sprayed because brushing the entire tank is really time consuming.

If you haven't tried it before, you can apply a base, then chipping fluid, one colour, then more chipping fluid, then second colour, and then chip. Essentially do it all in one step, rather than two rounds of chipping. The resulting chips will show the "middle" colour around the edges with the dark base in the middle, as you have done here with the mint showing around the edges of the dark steel chips through orange/brown camo. Hopefully I explained that well. It's much faster (well twice as fast) and this way you won't have to worry about lining up the second set of chips with the first layer of chipping. Take care!

I didn't think about that! But there was another reason... the FFI Somua didn't see any action and when they captured it, there was no ammunition left for the main gun so they used it as a glorified police car in Paris, just roaming the streets, doing nothing. I am most of the way through the Tamiya R35 that I had put off forever. I kinda wish I had seen this back when I started it (to the time machine!). I ended up just hand painting the camo patterns with a base coat done with the airbrush. My airbrush is a little splattery for such a small tank, so brushes it was.

That’s the best approach! I’d do it the same way if I didn’t want to try multiple layer hairspray chipping. The brush method is also really fun with these camouflages

Ah I remember seeing the Somuas in Blitkrieg 1 with a desert paint job, so cool.

First time commenting, I love your channel. Currently I'm building this same kit, somehow I lost one of the superior wheels, if I can't find it, I already built a "fake one" using a circular tiny piece from an 1/16 Panzer I, a bit of putty and a tiny remnant of the plastic sprue of the Somua S35 kit.
