Ok Brian a good video and do you think this will eventually be an issue with Windows 11 which I run on all of my machines? Now I have checked my disk management and it shows two recovery partitions - one being 969MB and one that is 1.46GB and (I am not sure how this came about) and if being like this will be sufficient for any possible problems plus I am not sure of which of those two partitions would be of use in update problems for my laptop in the future should updates be errored?? Do you think that the MiniTool app could be used to make these two partitions into just one? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
You only need to use the Extend option on the Recovery Partition. It will automatically resize the partition you're taking space from. Just make sure you select the correct partition to grab space from, in the pull down menu (most likely C:).
Window 10 home user Used the tool to increase my partition by 1GB. Spat it's dummy 1st time, but another restart and the update worked successfully. Good job. 👍
Hello sir Brian. I followed every instruction of this video and it worked flawlessly. Thanks for your help and here's my like, subscription and all my respects for you. Greetings from Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico. God bless you so much.
Brian you're a legend man! Long time subscriber here. I booted my old win 10 gaming PC and I got that error. I remembered you posted a vid about an update and came here for help. You never disappoint!

No, I used the free version. I used to use Gpart but this worked well. Maybe not the easiest for some to understand, but the trick is not to be scared.
Thank you very much it was very helpful i appreciate it, would like to ask you a quick question I'll keep it short, with the mini tool once we resize and fixs the issue and update the update, Do we always have to keep the mini tool on our desktop or can we uninstall the mini tool later on just wondering if it'll be ok too?
I've tried about a zillion ways to fix mine. I have 2 disks. The disk mine is on, when I try to shrink it by 250 I get a error saying it's too big. After more research, Microsoft is aware of the issue and will be releasing a patch to fix it very soon. So, instead of doing all this crap and possibly messing up your pc doing it. Just wait for the fix.

Diskpart program limit is 2TB MBR disk. The larger disk must be a GPT disk. Check that MBR and GPT disk type.

Should I un-hide the broken one before Microsoft next update? Or just leave it hidden?

None of this is necessary. Disable the RE environment from an elevated command prompt. Reboot and reenable the RE environment. Reboot again and then download the update. This fixes it in many cases. Though for some, it may take a couple of tries.

Hi there...I have a question please...My recovery partition, there is no name on it and i did the second way so now i have 4GB of space on that partition. All was good on Minitool software...But it didnt worked out. Still the same update error. On my disk management the recovery partition is in the first place and not at the end like you. And there is no name, is blank. But it was the only partition that was 500 and something megabytes and also was wroten on the Minitool as a recover partition. What can i do? Thank you
Do not mess with the partitions as it's a Microsoft issue. I made a new install of 10 & same error. It is not necessary to get update & they will have a fix for it soon, Just ignore it!

4 days ago they said they are working on a fix. Maybe they also have to work through some legalities with that update as I suspect they'll be modifying the partition which I assume for most would be an intrusion.

@@Britec09 Got that right, mate! Been watching your videos for a few years now and the information has been invaluable. In fact, just few weeks ago, my Surface Pro 3 started a boot loop with a message "Attempting to Repair" on startup. Granted I have less than 10GB free space left on the SSD but it worked fine so far. And if I boot from a Windows 10 USB drive, I am able to see all my files but none of the Windows 10 built-in options to "Restore" the PC (while keeping the data) seem to work. Watching your videos in this series makes me wonder if the issue with my SP3 might also be related to an update to the recovery partition as well as the fact that Microsoft may have downloaded an update in the background that filled up the SSD and it's unable to decompress the downloaded update files while applying the update to the recovery partition? Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work! 👍
God bless you man you're so effin solid!! I had the weirdest issue with a computer not booting st work all of a sudden. Offcourse you have a video about it with explained solution n everything! 👑
thank you very much. it worked like a charm. your directions step by step was easy to follow😀
Thanks Britec09 you have helped me understand windows 10 more and more every time I watch one of your videos and I really do appreciate it.
Great video! I have already applied the commands to my pc as well. It's pretty straight forward once you know what to do however I will not recommend anyone who isn't comfortable modifying partitions to do this and just wait for them to fix it themselves. I hope Microsoft never repeats this mistake again by telling everyone to modify partitions. I hope they will update the Installation media for currently supported versions of Windows to enforce the change.
My Windows 10 system has two 530 MB recovery partitions for some reason. CanI delete one and resize the other one or will that break Windows? Thanks.
Hmmm, I don't quite understand. My recovery partition is 1.61 GB and 100% free (as shown in Disk Management). Why do I still encounter this error, while the update only requires 250MB?
thanks, i have been having this issue in iot ltsc 2021 for a while and came across this video, did the cmd method cause i dont like to bloat my system and it worked. good work
I have a problem disk management shows I have only 2 partitions and no recovery partition at all. How do I add a recovery Partition?
Tx got it done with cmd, the MS article doesn't say anything about what to do when you have two drives, glad you did as i was confused about that.
Worked perfectly. Thank You!!
Helpful video thanks very much fixed the issue I was having , your a gentleman many thanks 👍👍👍
Used the Mini Partition Tool on three of my Windows 10 machines, worked like a dream, and so quick! Thanks!
This video is awesome! Your knowledge is outstanding and how you explain is making me feel very confident!! Thanks!
Hi Brian, the MiniTool method worked out brilliantly for me. The method was well explained and made everything very easy. Thank you very much.
Finally fixed the problem, thanks a lot for this video, you are awesome! Keep it up!
I’m confused when you use minipartition you refer to partition tool that you created surely this would be called recovery if you haven’t used Microsoft’s workaround or am I missing something.
Followed your instruction using MiniTool....and it worked perfactly...expept with the operation where we hane to ''extend '' the partition once it is created .....i didn't have the ''window RE minitool '' option to right clic on....i had to right clic on the ''unallocated space '' in the lil square ,bottom right of the minitool window then choose in the menu to extend partion....mayby it has to do with the fact that my OS is win10 pro....anyway....thanks for this fix.....now i can update window no problem...
Thanks worked fantastic :) tried following a lots of guide none worked, this solved the issue :)
Brian ur help is well appreciated
My C drive shows no partitions. In Disk Management my C Drive states the following: Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) I have a 512 GB SSD drive for my Windows 10 Pro OS My PC is scheduled for Windows Update on January 26, will I have problems if I only just allow the updates?
Thank you! Great video explanation. I used your video along with the Microsoft article to make sure I did this properly. It's pretty silly why the Windows update service couldn't have figured out to do this on its own..
Brilliant mate good clear instructions and it worked thank you
Thanks Brian, this worked fine for me easy to follow.
Hmm, I have a system reserved partition, the main partition, but no recovery partition.. any fix for that other than a reinstall?
Ok.. I have Windows 10 Pro.. Latest version.. and do you know of a 'smaller build'?? because I have a 1 Terra SSD drive I use for my main C drive.. and I am like almost out of space.. I've been using other programs to 'free up' space.. but often times I cannot even do a windows update because of 'lack of space..' which I believe with a Terra byte SSD I should have more than enough.. Suggestions?? Thanks Doug
great video, i've been scratching my head for weeks. Tried emptying windows update cache. I used the manual (command line) method (very carefully) on two computers - one MBR and the other GPT. Fixed! no errors or missing updates.
Thank you! It worked. Clear and simple instructions, very easy to follow even with people like me who's English is not very good. ps. if after you do the 2nd fix instructed in the video and you still get the error, run the trouble shooting in the update. After the trouble shooting, try the update again and it will work. It happened to 2 of my pc after doing the 2nd fix and i just run the trouble shooting and it updated.
My recovery partition is before the windows drive. Am I able to move the recovery partition to the end of the drive or somehow resize my current RE partition?
Because my recovery partition isn't adjacent to the new partition neither options work, how do you change partition order???
Using the mini partition tool worked perfectly! Thank you. 🤩
Thanks a lot for the great explanation Very clear dear Have a nice day 💗💗💗
u deserve all the love and support 💗💗 cuz this actually works 👌👌👌👌👌👌
this helped big time! thank you 🙏🏾
My computer is requesting to update now, is it worthwhile to change the partition size prior to allowing the update?
How do you put *:Windows RE tools in the partition wizard? I've managed to get 1.64GB of unallocated free space done, but I don't see that *:Windows RE tools showing like on your video.
Thank you Brian, worked a treat using the Mini Tool.👍

I fixed 3 computers with your video maid my life easier. Seems like i have been working to fix Microsoft problems sense windows came out in 1985. Thank You.
Hi, are these procedures safe to use in Bootcamp on a Macbook?
Thanks Brian I used your second method, downloaded mini tool partition wizard, sorted ❗ A much easier way around this avoidable problem. Thanks.
I'm not clear on this - which were you doing increasing or decreasing the unallocated space on the C Drive using Mini Tool? You spoke of both and then finally you said it was reducing the size so I dare not even start until I know which way C drive has to go - smaller or bigger on the unallocated space?
Excellent video tutorial. Keep up the good work.
Successfully used Microsoft work around and installed the update ! Thanks for pointing it out !
Just had this problem on my computer as always great source of information sorted the problem job done very happy
I used the mini-tool unsuccessfully twice. It resized but update still wouldn't go through. I finally just left it alone and uninstalled the mini-tool. unallocated space 2gb. Any thoughts? Thanks
Please help! When I restarted from Minitool after resizing the C drive 10:36 , my computer got stuck flashing "Press F2 or DEL to run Setup. Press F11 for Boot Menu." while my motherboard (Z77 Extreme 6) cycles between "Dr. Debug" code "A2" and "99". If I press either option, the screen goes blank and the motherboard shows code A9.
I used the mini-tool method, and it worked perfectly. Thanks! It even has an internal tutorial that worked made it a no-brainer.
Windows 10 Pro user. I did it the command line driven way and it worked on both Windows 10 machines at the house. My third machine apparently had enough space, even though all 3 PCs had roughly 512MB of space initially dedicated to the WinRE partition. But hey, at least it's working now. Thanks again for the video.
I did all of this and my updates work fine now but it doesn't show that my new partition is a recovery partition.
Thanks, worked like a dream!
Thanks it worked, you have to click apply after extending the recovery partition and reboot your system in order for the update to install successfully. For some weird reason in my case I have two recovery partitions and I found the correct one which is being used but I'm not going to bother deleting the other recovery partition as I do not want to risk breaking the system.
Ok , but what if partition refuses to shrink with diskpart, or any other 3rd party partitions manager? Is all what if left is clean windows install? I had success with this on few computers but one of them refuses any kind of partition resize.
Sorry, Britec09! But do it manually like that it is a huge risk to lose all you data in hard disk. It is highly recommended to do a backup of the entire C: before start this procedure!
I like your 2nd way as to stay out of PC trouble. Using it if MS does not fix this in another week.
Excellent guide. Clear, step-by-step instructions on how to enlarge the windows recovery partition. Issue resolved! Thanks, Brian
I have followed the above steps. The recovery partition is 1.51 GB now. It was formatted NTFS and healthy. However, the 2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441) gets stuck at 0% and then after a while I get Error 0x80070643. I have tried this both through CMD and MiniTool Partition. Any thoughts?
Hey Brian, I have Windows 10 and the disk is MBR, when I ran the the “create partition primary id=27 and formatted it, (as per the Microsoft instruction page) it labelled the partition as a primary partition with an ID of 7! I therefore had to find out how to change the ID, which I did successfully as it’s a simple case of selecting the correct partition and typing in > set id=27. The partition is now correctly labelled as a recovery partition but it had me worried for a while!
Hello! Thank you! I don't know what to do, try this method, or waiting when Microsoft will fix this error (how you tell in previous video)? I do what you showed in previos video, and I want to wait the fix, because I nervous when need to do things like this, I not big PC specialist and I feel uncomfortable about this things where one mistake can cost so much. Thank you very much!
I had zero faith that this would work. It fucking worked!!!! Dude, you are a legend and a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you for putting this out into the world.
I can't enable the reagentc again. It keeps giving image not found.
Waiting for an answer about the fact my C Drive does not have a specific Recovery Partition. Please Britec09, can you answer this question? I have been using this SSD drive for about 2 years now and I have never had any issues with Windows updates.
Excellent instruction video until I got to part list. I seem to have three recovery partitions all different sizes. Don't know which one to pick or too delete all three and carry on and create a new (single) recovery partition. Kinda stuck.
I'm having no luck at all, my Windows RE tools is 4.28 GB and it shows nothing is being used. Can I remove that partition and start from scratch? When I open Disk Management it shows 4.28 GB Healthy (Recovery partition). When I right click in that box it just says Help.
For the operation with the Mini Tool it worked because you had the recovery partition and the unallocated partition adjacent . I tried the operation when the two partitions were not adjacent the Mini Tool refused to do the job . I didn’t dare to do it the Microsoft way because of the ‘adjacent ‘ stuff . In you example you had the two partitions adjacent so every thing worked fine.
Thanks for the MS link. I waited for a week and a half for MS to fix this but I went ahesd and did the manual way. Does minitools fix thumb drives that went to write protect mode. Happens some times when I reformat them.
I did this and it increased my recovery partition size but when I try to re-enable the recovery partition it says the windows re image was not found. Now what?
I ran reagentc /info . Windows 10 "thinks" my recovery partition is on disk 0 part 1 when it should be on disk 2 part 3. Any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks
this didn't work, and now the command prompt is telling me "The Windows RE image was not found." when I try to enable. C'mon man....
I was wondering if the extra space is intentional before the = or if its a typo for the following command: gpt attributes =0x8000000000000001
worked perfect , Many Thanks , easy version 😁😁
Great lesson, thank you. I have just one Problem, my recovery partition was not installed. So I can't enable it, but all other steps working well, even in disk management shows a recovery partition now.
worked the treat for me, thx
it works bro thank you, very useful
Your instructions were clear and worked perfectly. The free tool made the job easy. Thanks
I had to shrink my partition by 500mb to make it work but you said you could do more. 250 didn’t work for me but 500 did. Thanks for the help, it was a little scary making changes like that. I’m no IT guy but you made it easy for me.
Mate, you are the best! Got it at the first try! No damage to my PC and the update worked. Thank you very much!❤
Worked slick to fix the Microsoft Windows 10 break. My computer had 2 primary partitions, so the 1st way was too risky. The 2nd method was safer and it fixed the error.
Thanks Brian, good practice for me with diskpart.

Great guide.. Problem solved.. Thankyou
This update failed on 3 different systems, tried the MS KB method with the diskpart on one, and was left with the inability to renable the reagentc. Had to recover the winre.wim image and reload that. The GUI disk partition without deleting/readding or any command line worked well on the rest of them, and was a lot easier (used acronis disk director since that was already licensed and installed, same thing really). this was actually quite helpful

Thank you very much Brian. It's seems that the mini tool is much easier to use over what is suggested by MS. But personally we should not fix their error. I would rather wait for the patch. Maybe MS want us to break our computer in order to buy a newer one.
