Windows updates has always had problems. I can distinctly remember WinXP throwing out anything from downloading errors to installing errors. Back then if the updates failed we would just download the problem file, and install it manually. Now they've automated to the point I don't even know if they still allow that to be done. The last time I had the issue was with a version of Netframework that Handbrake needed to allow dvd transcoding. Despite Windows 10 having all the current versions pre-installed, for some reason I still had to manually install one. I think it was 5.6, or something.

The absolute BEST, sure-fire way to get it to work is to start working on something extremely important that must be completed immediately, preferably with someone waiting for you to send them the end product. Most assuredly a forced update will kick in and force-restart to install. Never fails. One of many reasons I haven't used Windoze as a daily driver in over a decade.

I get the spirit of your post, but the issue with this error is that it doesn't install itself. If downloads several tens of gigabytes of data, then slows your pc to a crawl trying to install it, then forces you to reinstall but never actually goes trough. And so the next bot cycle it tries again, eating up all your data if you're on limited data connections. Windows is a virus.

For the record, I've never had a Windows troubleshooter fix anything and relying on Windows restore points is usually a disaster too. Regular backups are a must since Microsoft's go-to solution is to reinstall Windows from scratch. Luckily Windows 10 has been pretty stable for me so I'm in no hurry to take any chances with 11.

I've never reaaaally had a problem with windows 11, for a while now actually. VERY stable. Just DO NOT get in on the windows insider with 11... offramping didn't allow me out without the nuclear option. But outside that vary rare instance, yea windows 11 is a stable and safe bet for me and anyone else I know. It's just getting hated on for MS pushing it too hard.

I used to regularly use windows troubleshooter to fix one thing back in windows 7, and it was for Areo for the window transparency. Only had to run it at fresh install to get it working

@@xPaPaDx Also for the record. I observed this (not my machine): Win10 oem installation on laptop which came with 2 SSD partitions, where the C: was about 30G. The other was 30G or more (don't recall exactly) with lots of free space. After some time of use and several (automatic/forced) updates, the machine ended up in a loop of errors saying it was unable to update. It didn't really say why, but we found out it was due to not enough space for the downloads + unpacking on C: We never had any luck getting it to make use of all the free space on D: for this, and what filled up most of C: was actually Windows itself!

No the troubleshooter is a joke and always have for 20 years -It only there for old folk who might belive it fixes something

Unfortunately, Windows Update can break in Windows 10 and they don't tell you how to fix it. The best way is to reset Windows Update when it breaks.

Or they give you some generic, canned fix like "restart your PC, and update to the latest build of Windows." Like, what? I disabled the update service in Windows 10 because no matter what, every single time I update, my machine gets slower. Usually the function that suffers the most is shutdown. When I first install Win10 of any version, my PC will shut down almost immediately. One update ruins it, and it will sometimes take up to a full minute to shutdown. In some cases I've had to shutdown manually because it seems to get stuck. Windows updates have been crap since WinXP, so I never expect them to work in any other OS. Not to mention they can break functionality for some of the programs I use. For me it's always best to just do a full system wipe, and install the newest version from scratch.

Great video, I'm not sure how Microsoft could possibly have goofed up something so vital as this. And hopefully they release an update in the future that fixes this ridiculous problem. For the record, You can also do "Cd %programdata% to get to the programdata directory quickly even if you aren't in the root directory. Works great with a batch file. You can do the same with %appdata% to easily go to the application data directory. I would create a batch file for all this, so you can run the batch file without having to do all the typing.

The one time I had problems with Windows 10 update, it turned out to be that the recovery partition was too small, causing it to fail. I ended up having to reinstall from scratch and restore data in order to get it to work.

Thank you very much for your well-explained and easy-to-follow instructions. I'm currently carrying out the procedure to see if it fixes the current Windows Update issue in my Windows 10 Pro system. Can you please let me know if the steps will still work if I do them with Windows booted up in Safe Mode, or will I be missing something there? The reason I ask is because while I was doing it with Windows booted normally, Cryptograph service kept failing to stop (whether by CMD or in Services app) although I launched Command Prompt as Administrator, and also some file/folders couldn't be deleted/renamed due to some process still using them. (I therefore aborted the procedure at this point, so I don't know if any of the remaining steps would've worked or not). I'm hoping, in Safe Mode there will be less obstruction from various background processes.

Great video! You should make a video on how to avoid the automatic update to Windows !! from Windows 10. As far as I know, there are some scripts for Power Shell to accomplish this, besides turning off the TPM on the Bios.

Same, can't stop catroot2 and I think some of my files are corrupted so I dont even think this will help

I usually, run sfc /scan then open another cmd as admin to fix corrupt files; and run: net stop wuauserv Net stop bits Then go to rename Software distubution folder then go back to the cmd and run Net start wuauserv Net start bits then check the updates or Software center ( depends on your kinda work) Its worth repairing ccm as well to repair software center. I just subscribed!

I remember building a script that did something similar on Windows 8.1, might update it for Windows 11.

Great video. On a few, rare occurrences the troubleshooter has worked for me.

The couple of times it crashed on me I just made sure windows update wasn't running, cleared out that softwaredistribution folder and did a restart. 👍

Not sure if you'll ever see this but thanks for the video. I took everything in the video and made it into a single batch file. Added some error checking to make sure it's doing what it's supposed to. The whole thing runs in about 20 seconds and even reboots the computer at the end. Also on my version of Win11 Pro, a handful of those dll files do not exist in system32 for me. Still, everything works as it should. Thanks again!

Thank you . I think I'd pay good money to have all of this in a single Batch File I could run (hint). I'm not that confidant in my PC skills . Also , my specific issue with Windows Update failing is due to a Microsoft "bug" apparently . I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 and now when I try and Update Windows10 I get an Error that tells me I don't have a valid License , which of course I do . I can see it ! Would all of your suggestions in this Video resolve that or am I still looking at another issue ? I am curious if your Advertisement for purchasing a Microsoft License and replacing the old one might work. Your thoughts ? Cheers ./SRK

I have my Windows updates delayed by three weeks. That way by the time I get the update most of the bugs have been fixed.

@@Narcan885 In Windows 11 go to Settings, then Windows Updates. The tab that says, "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available." Turn that switch to OFF. Below that where it says, "Pause updates," you can set that to pause updates from 1 to 5 weeks. Hope that helps.

We have all likely been here at some point. Almost as annoying as the time it can take for Windows update to check for updates.

I just want to know what is the name you have add to save the text commands

you can also use the command 'cd %programdata%' or 'cd %allusersprofile%' for accessing 'c:\ProgramData\'

Okay so I followed absolutely everything like double and triple checked doing each step. But for some reason I still have this update error for my windows 10. I thought maybe I needed more space on my pc so I deleted majority of my games. Should I just hard reset my pc at this point and start from complete scratch? Or will this error still be there to haunt me?

I did everything exactly how you did it and restarted my computer and it still gives me an install error code when trying to install the update. I have no corrupted files I went through and scanned using your other video you suggested at the end. Thank you for your help!

Bro i'm facing the same thing on my Asus Rog strix scar 17 gaming laptop I can't get Windows updates to work at all nor can I use the Microsoft store apps although I have internet access and can surf the Internet but for whatever reason I cannot get Windows updates to work or the Microsoft store and it is super frustrating

What is your take on this - What do you think of this? Windows 11 has strict hardware requirements and even the slightest deviation means something will not work in Win11. I have tried it with 3 different computers, and something different was out of whack on each one. Microsoft has tried their best to make it look and operate more like a Mac. Also, Win11 is an "always online" OS, meaning it's always trying to connect to Microsoft online services and it assumes that you want to be always online and sharing absolutely everything with the whole world, and getting constant feeds from everywhere. It also needs to be online because it is constantly downloading updates from Microsoft (as in: every other day), so if you're not connected, it will start downloading updates every time you start up. THANKS

There are a couple of ways to achieve some of the things you are talking about. It is easy to bypass the installation and create a single user account and not having to "login". Then the issue with TPM and other securities are easy to bypass. I don't like Win11, but it is an evil we need to live with until someone comes up with a better solution. You can, of course, run Linux, but I already see things more and more causing people to shrug their shoulders and just hand over the information. Soon we will, most likely, getting an annual subscription to Windows 12. Same as Office 365.

@@aelaan12 dude... THIS VIDEO is more comlicated than fixing most errors on linux, seriously. The step up for linux the last 2 years has been incredible. I have dual boot, but havent even started windows in 3 months. EVERYTHING I need I can do in linux, and I game a LOT.

I started my career in computers on CP/M and M$ made me a very comfortable living, but now I'm retired don't have to put up with this 'Every-Fucking-Thing as a Service' money grab. I've been called on for help with a handful of W11 systems and have just about had enough of the flash-over-substance BS. M$: It's NOT a MAC! It's NOT a PHONE! Quit trying to make your desktop OS look and act like something far, far inferior.

I did not expect that to work on Windows 8 (not 8.1, original Windows 8), holly! I literally tried that out of curiosity due to similarities compared to Windows 10, but I literally got 3 updates on my Windows 8 laptop.

My friend I have a huge problem and could really use your help I'm sure you get this 100s of times a day but do you have any advice for a PC that is getting a flickering screen everytime I even click on update windows? I have manually updated the drivers and that didn't help, I Uninstalled my graphics card and reinstalled that didn't help, and I can't run the PC in safe mode at all without it having the same crashing issue.

"The troubleshooter has restarted the Print Spooler Service." And that's it. For 10 years that's the only one that's worked.

From Windows 10 17 to 20, I had Windows Update stop working. Every time I had to download and update my usb installation pen, and reinstall Windows. It was 4 frustrating years. Not that I reinstalled, just because Windows Update stopped working, but for other Windows issues, so maybe once a year. I have a very complex set of software and settings, so it takes a day or two, to reinstall everything. And it's not like I didn't try to fix Windows Update. I've tried every suggestion I could find, but they never worked. Although I haven't seen your approach, but a variant of it. I concider myself a superuser, as I've tinkered with dos commands, since the mid 90s,and fixed a lot of people's computers. This problem, however, was never solvable for me, on my own computer. Since Windows 10 21,I haven't had the problem, and I didn't change any hardware, method of installation or software, so it must be Microsoft that fixed something in Windows.

13:21 you don’t need that if you restart your computer. You didn’t disable those services. Just stopped them temporarily. After a restart they are running again without any additional command

Would it be possible to set all the commands you used into a single (or multiple) .bat files to automate this will less typo errors? Good info and vid.

I also felt like the trouble shooter was useless, not until when I couldn't activate my windows due to some errors, I tried all KZread recommendation but to zero success, so I just gave troubleshoot a try, and boom, it worked like magic, the sweetest part was that I didn't have to purchase the activation keys, sadly it doesn't work on all computers...

Hello, any ideas as to how to get windows 10 Pro to update to 22H2 from 1709? I keep getting a message that states I can't install windows on a usb flash drive using set up when I am not using a usb. Another message is eroor code 0xc1900201. Any ideas? Thank You John.

If Windows Troubleshooter fixed your problem, you've seen something so rare that we might not be describable using current mathematical models. It would be like winning the lottery every second, from the beginning of the known universe, to after its death, a million times over, and I'm being kind and overestimating the likely hood.

Apologies for invading with a stupid question here, but MS provides zero support these days. I followed the script to the letter to fix the Bitlocker issue (I don't use bitlocker, so just for reference). When I attempt to re enable Windows RE, says the image wasn't found. In the step prior, I list the partitions, I see the new Windows RE partition is marked "hidden", but it's there. Any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to recover? Thanks in advance.

I've tried 2 things that windows Trouble Shooter (sometimes) works for: Audio issues, and LAN connection issues..... but mostly they don't work.

Can we have a vid about having windows keep the tags we select in file explorer? Eg: when i need to sort by file TYPE it is quite a tedious process to make it visible. Then the next time u need to sort by file type again u have to manually & tediously reselect it again!

Personally I've have actually had the troubleshooter fix issues with Windows Update before. That said, I work on a LOT of systems (high hundreds to low thousands in a given year). The number of times I've seen the troubleshooter fix a problem is more than one or two hands worth, but isn't all that high either. I agree that it's a great concept (and maybe all this work in AI will help) but in practice it really hasn't been worth the time.

Hey there, I watch your videos whenever I got stuck at any problem. Please I need your help that I couldn't find in your playlist. My laptop is not shutting down and doesn't even restarts. im having some very unusual problems. for me Windows update stopped working, windows Recovery, to restore to a previous restore point stopped working, and when i tried to use a windows media creation tool, to try and reinstall windows, it told me it could not be used on my pc, i tried both using it on my pc it self, and then tried using it on a flash drive, but then it broke my flashdrive, and everytime i try putting that flashdrive in my pc, it tells me to put in a CD into the flashdrive, which isnt possible. but then after 5 hours of trying a whole bunch of different things, my windows update started working again, and i was able to download updates. but the other two things i listed, are still not functioning as they should. oh yea, i also tried to do the " reset my pc " option, and that didnt work either. so idk what to do. i just had to reinstall my operating system back in december, and i think i might have to do it again. but idk how, when it isnt working. :( oh yea, i have this version of windows 10. 22H2 and heres the build number 19045.3930

I noticed that when u searched it said indexing is not running, I had this issue when I was on a local account but when I went Ms account it disappeared, would like for you to look into this. Had it in both win10 and win11

I did everything smoothly, there were a couple of hiccups (my laptop is OBSOLETE but I can't part with it!) the problem was that I could not rename the Software Distribution to another name. Now crossing fingers and see if my Windows Update will work!

All seemed to be going well untill i got to catroot2. It says....The process cannot access the file because its being used by another program. Im having a problem when trying to delete or rename those directories When i try to delete softwaredistribution, it says that it cannot be done because the files are being used by another process When i try to delete catroot2 it says the same thing. What can i do?

Had the Windows Defender not update. Been searching for fixes. Finally found one. 2H22 is updated after downloading the update about 10 times.

Would factory reset help do anything?

Plug out your ethernet or disable your WiFi if connected. In addition to the aforementioned services, stop the below services aswell... net stop msiserver net stop dosvc Don't forget to start them when restarting the other services.

You don't. This is just the first step in troubleshooting when Windows update doesn't work. The vast majority of the time it works fine without any issues.

Windows Update Troubleshooter found errors for me just one time. And it wasn't the olde "Pending Restart" thing either.

This didn't work for me on Window 11. Is it the same set of instructions for Windows 11?

I am having problems with installing windows 11 update 23h2. It downloads and installs but keeps stopping at 61%. Any advice on how to push this update thur?

I can see the wupdate file in my system 32 folder but when attempting to use the command wupdate.bat Shows not recognized. Spelling matches. Any tips lol first PC build is beating me down.

The "update and shutdown" was acting strange for the latest Windows 11 update I did yesterday. It restarted my pc as usual, but then my pc just shut off without doing the "updates installing" screen. I turned my PC back on and all was fine, but then it said again when I went to shutdown that there was an update pending...so I did update and restart this time. Again, didn't do the "updates installing" and it showed that I needed to update for a third time, so I went and manually checked and installed the remaining update and that finally fixed it. Getting really tired of Windows 11 shenanigans...so far the worst Windows experience I've had.
