    Many good points. Just my input: I have been a pipe smoker for many, many years. I started when I was just 18 and am now nearly 70. So I know a bit. You are correct, the pipe plays a huge part in ones 1st experience. But, also a beginner must break in his (or her) mouth. Many tobaccos could be to harsh. I like scalded my mouth when I was a beginner with an apple blend I though smelled good so I thought that was what I wanted to try. Be patient. Take your time. Go easy at first. On another health and well being issue that I ham experiencing: Be sure that this is a hobby that you want to take up. I have been a pipe clincher you many of my years. Now on my right side I have missing teeth where I clinched and can no longer clinch my pipe on that side (so now I am on the the left side) My clinching took it's toll on me. Another issue that I am having is that through smoking so much over the years I am having blood circulation issues in my left foot (little toes). I was told by a few drs that it is due to years of smoking that has caused the small capillaries to harden and constrict the blood flow especially during the winter in a freezing climate where my feet get cold. How much of all this is in fact true, I can't be sure, that's just what medical drs are telling me. Do I continue to smoke? Yes I do, but I have cut back considerably and also have been prescribed a medication that seems to be helping me a little. So, enjoy, but Be warned, this hobby (if a life long hobby) may come with it's health concerns.

    Great points. I'm sure smoking pipe has less benefits, especially with more frequency, of which, I am guilty😁 That being said, the practicing medical "professionals" are always going to blame smoking, as soon as you answer yes to the question. It's an easy scapegoat, and they can sound competent as they tie it in to ones ailments, one way or another. Mind you, "they" still can't figure out whymy hand goes numb sometimes, but thousands$$$ in tests telling me they're looking for the reason🫤

    @@nisamvise1724 Hi! Thinking back, I guess I became interested in the pipe mainly because I always liked the smell of other men pipe smoking. Also someone smoking a pipe always to me appeared to be maybe a little more distinguished and stood out from the crowd. In later years I liked it due to its calming and relaxing nature of not being rushed. There are so many tobaccos out there now and are more everyday it seems so I enjoy checking them out. Kind of like a hobby now..

    I agree with your advice on starting with a corn cob pipe. From my own experience, I would suggest starting with purchasing from bulk or house blends rather than randomly buying tins. Buy 1 oz. - 2 oz. sample bags of a few basic tobacco blend types, to see what you like and don't like. Then, move on to tins and/or larger quantities of bulk tobacco. It will save money and allow for an enjoyment of the hobby to occur sooner.

    I've been smoking my pipe for a year and just now started to detect specific notes. Sipping definitely makes the flavors more apparent. Also, when starting a new briar remember there may be some "burning" briar flavored mixed with the tobacco until the pipe is properly broken in. About 20 or so smokes in my experience. Shire pipes aren't bad as they are pear wood. I have several in my collection. However, pear wood is not as resilient as briar and will burn easier until broken in.

    I understand that most all beginners will start with aros, so I just recommend that they’re not the ONLY blends they start with. Most beginner problems come down to moisture content and cadence. Great advice as always! Good stuff brother 👊🏻

    I have a question: I've been smoking pipes for a couple of years now (most days several pipes), but I find that my tastes keep changing. Blends that I had been enjoying for weeks become completely unenjoyable, so I try a something different and sometimes it takes awhile but find a blend I like - sometimes it is a blend I hated when I first tried it, but after finding my new sweet spot my tastes change again. Sometimes I have found my way back to enjoying previously loved, then hated, blends. Anyone else have this experience? Any tips? I enjoy your content, and I hope you and your family and your congregation are doing well. I concur with the advice in this video, I'd add for beginners: put in an order for 1oz of a dozen different bulk blends of various categories, and get a 12 pack of 4oz mason jars to store them in, because down the road you may find yourself enjoying something you didn't when you started. One once isn't a lot, about 10 fills of an average pipe, so when you learn what you like the 8oz mason jars hold about 4oz of most cuts of tobacco. I hope the beginners find enjoyment in pipe smoking.

    Rules for new pipe smokers: pack it properly, smoke it slowly. Sip it. Stay well hydrated and have cold water to sip while smoking. Not alcohol or hot beverages. If you get dry mouth use biotene mouthwash for a while until you figure out your cadence. Use a full flavored tobacco, not aromatic. Try a mild English or oriental mixture. They won’t leave you wanting more flavor and you won’t draw as hard to find it. And get a decent pipe. Bones are great. Or a cheap savinelli or Rossi.

    Something that really helped me was figuring out what smoking slowly really meant. At first I thought it meant longer gaps between puffing but, my pipe would just go out. Then I would smoke to fast and hot and ruin the experience. Once I realized it was the intensity of the draw and not so much how often you puff, everything changed. Long, light, gentle, smooth puffs. Comparing it to drinking through a straw is not a good comparison in my opinion because it is way to intense of a draw in my experience. Still trying to figure out the perfect pack though 🤔😔

    It’s not the pipe. It could be how much they are putting in and definitely the speed of smoking. I bought one of those cheap pipes from my local store and I had the same problem til I learned to pack the bowl(I think it was from you brother) and take my time. Ordered 3 corn cobs and a briarwood pipe today along with a good bit of pipe tobacco. Thanks for sharing and hope all is well. God bless!

    Very good advice, but I will say that the section on not smoking aromatics to begin with can be misleading, since some aromatics, especially quality blends, will generally not be oversaturated or too "wet". My first blend was Riverboat Queen, previously Rivendell by the country squire and it smoked perfectly out of my Peterson.

    I could use some advice on how to keep the pip lit without overheating the pipe. I am using a missouri meerschaum diplomat and I can keep it lit all the way to the bottom after the true light but at a cost of heat. It gets so hot I have to keep adjusting my grip lower and lower on the pipe because it to hot to touch. I've tryed to slow down my puffs but it then has a problem with it going out. I am currently smoking chelsea morning pipe tobacco.

    I’ve been a once-per-month-ish smoker for a decade, but want to start smoking more often. I couldn’t before because I worked in healthcare but now I’m self-employed at home. Before, I would smoke while reading or meditating so I could hold the pipe. But now I want to smoke while working with my hands so I tried the breathing technique you talk about in other videos. How do you deal with the spit??? I’m worried about getting backwash into the stem if I keep it in my mouth while working.

    It's been my experience that bent pipes particularly longer churchwarden style pipes diminish flavor. Or at the very least alter it from what you might taste from a straight pipe. I prefer churchwarden pipes and some blends taste better than others in churchwardens. That's why it's best to have different pipes for different blends and matching the pipe that makes the blend taste the best.

  • @asahelnettleton9044

    @asahelnettleton9044

    I've never smoked cigarettes, so I can't compare what the nicotine in pipes and cigars does comparatively with that, but my answer would be: maybe. I am able to feel the effects of nicotine while smoking pipes, but it honestly depends on how accustomed or desensitized your body is to it, and what blends you're smoking, or how many in relatively quick succession. Generally, burley has higher nic content than Virginia, for example, so burley heavy blends usually have that effect on me. But my sensitivity has reduced, so I might have to smoke a couple pipes back to back, or at least I don't feel the effects until I'm at the bottom of a bowl, 45-60 minutes after I've started. Good question! I'm curious as to the experience of others here. I'm sure it varies from one person to another.

Where they as you said should have slowed down and sipped on it not drawing on it every other second or two...but every 4 or 5 seconds with short pauses every so often to let the coal cool a little so it doesnt over heat or burn out the pipe to quickly.

    The atomization of our culture is a shame when it comes to this hobby. The best thing for someone interested would be to meet with an experienced piper to learn the ropes (and bum some starter tobacco off of). There is a bit of startup investment, but all hobbies have that. You ought to be able to find a cheap, no name brand briar in the $35-50 range, or else corncob, or even clay. Czech tools and lighters are pretty cheap.
