Let's do a medical diagnosis coding example! The patient has ulcerative colitis with rectal bleeding. The keyword is "colitis" so we look that up in the alphabetic index. As we scan the next indentation we go under "ulcerative" and then with" and finally "rectal bleeding" which leads us to code K51.911. Once verified in the tabular, we see this is the correct code and no additional coding instructions are listed.

Thank you for your help! I have my medical coding certificate for the ICD-9 series. I received it in 2013. The community college would just brush aside the ICD-10 material as if it was worthless. I never became certified because the next year ICD-10 was implemented. It was finally implemented! I also realized that a lot of medical coding has to be done on my own. I had graduated from this community college so it didn't take me awhile to obtain a certificate in medical coding. I find it ironic that prior to my externship, a letter was sent in the mail stating that there would no longer be a medical billing and coding major at the school. If only...

Hey I’m wanting a career change and I can’t decide between a IT specialist or medical billing & coding. I’m an introvert and suffer with anxiety and prone to get depressed easily being around people to long. I do adapt to my environment and can socialize it’s just exhausting. Anyways I am pretty good with tech/computers and may want to be a software engineer after I get experience with either one. Not totally sure though. I also plan to have a food trailer business on the weekends. So this new career I’m looking for will be Monday through Friday. Which job would you recommend? Better in demand, salary, security and flexible

Hey! Question. Hey so I see K51.811 says OTHER ulcerative colitis w/ rectal bleeding. Why would this code be wrong. That’s the one I found just curious for the rationale.

Hey this is old but i’ll try and answer K51.811 is for OTHER UC- where we would have documentation in the record to say what other type. If it does not fall under categories K51.0- K51.5.. K51.9 is simply unspecified where the record doesn’t state the type of UC.
Seems so easy, are you always in the books or do a lot become memorable codes.

Yes, it does mean inflammation of the colon. If you look up ulcer or ulcerative, you will find that there are many types of ulcers. It's a break in the mucous membrane of the skin or an organ. Ulcers usually cause bleeding
