They actually make Bass ukelele's that can be amplified to achieve some pretty interesting results. Because of the rubbery nature of the strings they can actually do a way better job of mimicking and upright bass than most normal electric basses if you dial in the tone right (which is hilarious to see people react to considering how much smaller it is). I knew one guy a few years ago who had a fretless one and it was like the main focus of his band, he put it through a bunch of pedals and did a ton of really interesting shit with it.

Yeah I have one and I love how it sounds, its a very round, squishy, and bassy sound, quite different to any sound I can get from my electric bass. "Jacob Collier - Boogie On Reggae Woman (on the U-Bass)" is a good demonstration for it. It's also handy to have a bass that's just tiny that you can pick up and hear without having to plug it in

Heck yes. Though since like the 1500's hurdy gurdys weren't a popular instrument. Overly complex mechanisms and the lack of ability to blend in an orchestra left the hurdy gurdy as something a busker would be playing, often out of tune, at some cheesy town fair. Though yes I agree they sound way cool, definitely better than bagpipes when comparing droning instruments, they really need a resurgence.
