Let me show you how I glaze my paintings…
Glazing is a great way to unify a painting. By covering areas of a painting with a thin glaze of color, areas instantly feel related since they have the glaze in common. I’m at that stage in this painting, so let me show you how I do it.
A little color, combined with a medium, makes a thin glaze that I can apply quickly over a large area. This feels so good because it differs from building layers and applying thick paint! After rubbing in the glaze, the whole picture feels unified. But as with anything, you can go too far with glazes. A painting can feel too cohesive and lifeless. That’s when I work back on top of the glaze. Finding the right blend of thick, thin, glazed and unglazed is a dance! Give it a try.
How do you use glazes in your work? Let me know in the comments.
On this weeks’ podcast, I’ll share my thoughts about flow state and how to work more efficiently. We think it’s about being at the studio more and working harder. But really, it’s about practicing the thinking behind your art-making. I hope you’ll join me this Wednesday for the next episode! You can find our Podcast right here on this channel

I love how you added that dark glaze, and then proceeded to wipe much of it away, but it left such lovely marks. I am learning so much from you! I am very fortunate to be in CVP!
Very interesting and very helpful!!
Your tips are so helpful! So appreciated Nick.
Glazing helps pull things together and unites everything. Heard this podcast - now one of my favorites!
hi nicholas,
I’m thinking about this right now as I work to tame down a gong show! Interesting and timely post for me Thankyou. ❤
I use glazing to adjust the color. I am currently working on a painting that went way too orange, and I plan to use a blue glaze to bring it into a more neutral hue. It has already been glazed with quinacridone gold, which integrated areas that contrasted too much with the background. Then I had to add brights and darks to liven it up again, as you said. I like the way you used your glaze to emphasize the surface texture.
Yes please, I would love to know more about glazing.
Always an inspiration!
thanks for the refresh. at first i thought glazing was hard and then i thought it was easy now, guess what ,it feels hard but i think im understanding it better than year ago. i think
Really love your podcasts Nicholas. Thank you.
Yes, I had a large mural that we glazed to unify it! Great idea! Ty for the reminder ❤
I am getting some golden glaze delivered today. I watched a KZread about the process, so of course, I have to try it!
Selective glazing. Good idea. Love the use of steel wool. Never did that. Looks like such fun!
Water in acrylic paint is not great for glazing, you can get away with water on very small areas but Gloss Golden Glazing Liquid is way better or the Golden GAC series has a couple great glaze liquids.
Thanks for reminding me that I don't have to paint every day to get ahead. I am in your academy and feel a little lost as I have missed the boat. I shouldn't say this, I know, but I actually have little time. I try to do something small every day to keep the fire going. Yes I use glazes also to connect elements. So I get depth and three-dimensionality even without applying too thick.
I love glazing
yes, both with a transparent color and cloudy with white added to a color.
great video ! What would be good for acrylic paintings? :-)
How do you know what color to glaze over the color you are working with?
