I always hold my breath when you start reworking a painting, but I love it because I tend to stress out about “ruining” or losing parts of my own work. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it better than what I already have

By far one of the most difficult steps to take. It's so easy to become attached to a painting, having put precious time into it, but if it's not working then this is the best solution. I have several I have been dabbling on for a few months, and now I think I'm going to "go big and bold" and obliterate some of those least-favorite areas and see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have a lot of canvases and panels I want to paint over. I agree with what you say. If it gives me pleasure and energy I'll keep it for now but if it's like baggage and taking up space and every time I walk by it I think to myself I don't like it....I paint over it. I love using the texture of an old painting to make a new one. It's almost easier than starting on a blank panel for me.

Wow ... that was very gutsy. I have a tendency to keep things too precious and therefore do not feel so free. It was really good to see you do this to one of your large pieces. Only when the piece is either very small or I totally hate it can I be so radical with it. Great lesson! Thank you.

I'm sure I'll be making use of this approach Nicholas, I have plenty of old work that needs 're-purposing'.

Wow! I really loved the old painting, so this was painful to watch. Yet, I understand the process of reworking an old painting, and I’m actually in the middle of doing that with one of my paintings. It’s an important concept.

I do this all the time too.

Love your videos and usually watch when having my lunch in the studio. I am always interested in materials artists use so I would love to see you mentioning the type of paint you're using, the paint that was used on the original work and the material you're painting on. I really loved the painting you covered over and would have bought it in a second. With all due respect, I think this was a case of painting dysmorphia, haha. I loved the before painting, what a gem!

I can never find the link to buy your paints??

I am wondering if the new paint is oil or acrylic over the old oil? Did you prep it at all, sand or apply anything to the surface? Being in CVP2020 I know that I will be taking a good long look at any old works that are in storage, once the course is over. Instead of taking a trip this year I’ll be tripping on ‘new creations’. Thanks for your generosity Nicholas!

Just whack layers of gesso on the old painting and you can do a new painting. Easy as

how do you clean the old painting before you paint on it? I overpainted my old paintings few times, but the new paint dosn´t stick to the old and after some time it starts pilling of.(working in oils) .Thanks for this video- it´s shocking and wonderful!!!

@@kerryrushton2953 hi kerry, with acrylics there is no problem, even when varnished, you can paint over it. But oils are tricky. I was told to rub old oil with amoniac before painting over it. Even sanding ! Thanks for your reply- even after 1 year it is nice to get a reply !!!

Is this acrylic paint your are using?

Your painting will give you some energy when you are wide awake, but not much energy when you're tired.

You are barely taking advantage of what was there before which is a pity. The painting has consequently lost a lot of its soul. You might as well have started with a new blank panel. I enjoyed watching nonetheless.
