Carry Stress in the Jaw and The Bends are my favorites. I think The Bends is eerily beautiful, and a great work of art. The way it tells a story with almost no lyrics is phenomenal.

I went back and re-listened to Disco Volante a few years ago on an acid trip, remembering it fondly from high school. It did not hold up. A lot of the production is bad. Particularly around The Bends (whatever all the sub-pieces are called). Some of the edits in that segment were downright unprofessional. Don't get me wrong, California is still a top 3 all time album for me, but Disco Volante... just, it's kind of bad. They're very capable, adroit musicians, but the album sounds like they just fuckin' hated each other and wanted to be done with it already.

You remind me of a lot of the musician friends I used to hang out with. You're always open to anything musically! Also, I hope soon, you will take a trip into the Secret Chiefs 3 universe. Probably almost every Mr. Bungle member has contributed to it, but it's the project of Trey Spruance. I think you will love it. Listening to the albums, and not individual songs is definitely the way to go. :)

I love this track at the end of the album. It's just like, yeah you thought we'd have a corny outro, nah we're doing death metal and harsh noise now. 6:20 Since the track is about S****e, I'd say that is a good description. You have alot of emotions (which is why the track is going to so many places I think) and go through hell but then at around that part at 6:20 it's all over and you got beamed into heaven.

The comparison that I have always felt with this song, specifically its transition back at the end are "Warhead" candies that are a sweet inside coated in tons of sour powder that you have to get through first. The first part of This song is "sweet" and light and feels a little bit fake, then you have this very dissonant, aggressive, noisy, "sour" section which almost feels like it is trying to drive you away (although it is surprising how much it can grow on you with repeat listenings), but then as it fades away and you are left with the consonant part again all that "sour" music has made the "sweet" sound so much more appreciated and really elevates it. Mr. Bungle often enjoys playing with consonance vs dissonance (I recommend Desert Search For Techno Allah from this album) but this is the purest example of what it can do.

I wish I'd had a chance to hear the later albums before I heard their self titled album. I don't know if it's just John Zorn producing, but I compare all their later work to this album and find them lacking in cohesion and drive. I've always felt that I'd enjoy the later albums if I could get away from that. I saw them tour this album and that show (including the opening act Deli Creeps featuring a young Buckethead) fucked me up forever (in a good way). 🤟🧙‍♂🤟

The coherence of the first album was due to the 4-5 years they'd spent playing most of those songs. Some people, in fact, prefer the demo versions over the album versions. But then you lose the train-hopping, profane Colonel Sanders, and Mr. Bungle school film and porn film samples. Disco Volante, imo, shows much greater Zorn influence than the first album.

I remember seeing them live when they were 1st touring this album...the crowd was clearly expecting to mosh to the same sort of metal-circus vibe from their 1st album...didn't happen..most were totally perplexed/frustrated. I love it, but its complexity and lack of consistent grooves make it a departure point for a lot of less sophisticated listeners who were only able to relate to the first album.

Needs more acoustic bass. I was like "what are they doing... oh"? Live play? No it's just some mad person with gifted digital skills. Very gifted. Multiple mics in a garage/church/basement is the Lost Art. This track is pretty dope though. Reminds me of what we used to call World Music.

There’s no digital skills on this. They recorded this, analog in 1995. Their next record was all analog as well
