Lessons to be learned from Zambia's economic path: Betty Wilkinson

Financial Markets Advisor Betty Wilkinson says African countries including South Africa, can lessons from how Zambia has started constructing its economic recovery. Fixing the civil service, empowering women, simplifying rules associated with business, and helping informal businesses to stabilise and grow, are some of the main ingredients. The Zambian economy was already ailing and fell into a deep recession when the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Some political writers, commentators and academics say the election of Hakainde Hichilema as the country's new president has guided Zambia toward economic recovery since taking office in August 2021.
Betty Wilkinson, Senior Financial Markets Advisor working with different sectoral agencies making recommendations to support development in the African markets, shares more.

I wish it was that rosey but unfortunately the wealth in the private sector segments along the line of race with indigenous Zambians at the bottom. And this has its ramifications in terms of housing, education, and business opportunities. The average Zambian is locked out of business opportunities with govt, it's mainly the preserve of Indians, Lebanese, and the Chinese. It begs belief as to why people's from a far a field as India, should be flown in to sink boreholes; successive Zambian govts ignored this, I hope the present govt will do something about it. I also hope the current govt can find a win, win solution to the average Zambian benefiting from the countries mineral resources, not only by fairer taxes but as a direct participant, a mine owner, minerals trader, a supplier of software solutions and hardware to the mines. If you closely examine Lee Yuan Yews policies, you will notice they are closely steeped in advancing the formerly, permanent underclass, the indigenous Singaporean. It goes without saying, the Zambian govt will definitely have to engage in the direct change of behavioral practices of its people, to bring about wealth enjoyed by other communities in Zambia, including recent Burundian migrants. The average Zambian is nonplussed in a business way, with no notion of earning an income outside of a quickly diminishing salary. The resources are there, unlike Singapore and Japan with no noteworthy resources; the govt will have to get clever, it's no longer acceptable to be poor when you are standing on wealth.

Fascinating interview, indeed South African civil society is disengaged in developmental debate and initiatives thereof. Hence, our school curriculum is not pragmatic to proactively transform the status quo. We rely on politicians, though their failures are explicit in all spheres of governance. Civil society is rather driven by distorted ideas of racial discrimination, xenophobia and party or tribalistic loyalism. We are economically passive society, that expect political elitism to change our lives, that's naive

Everyone who ploughs expect to harvest. If the government of Zambia is on the right path, then we should see the goodness to reflect among poor citizens. I leave abroad and whet i come with my foreign currency , yes the kwacha is gaining ground against other currencies especially South Africa rand but the buying power of the kwacha is weak still. Money evaporates LIKE DRINKING WATER. Unless i see people having decent housing, three meals per day and are able to save in banks for the future, i will not believe. Yours, doubting Thomas

problem with African countries is we want to employ people based on race , ethnicity or gender! South Africa having more than 40% of women in political office has not helped them at all. It's a useless way to look at things, employ someone based on merit, male or female, and you'll reap the rewards

In my opinion South Africa should be miles ahead, with all the minerals and the sea. SA is supposed to be ahead of Singapore.

Taking money where it is needed, to the community and not to where politicians want the money to go. Full participation of communities in their own programmes and giving them the money to actualize the programmes they want. Restructuring the education curricular. Thus the problem wealth is not on the natural resources wealth is investing in people. Benchmarks can be used based on different criterions maybe it was based on human development index and not necessarily on wealth. Wealth that black people are so much consumed and fixated on and never benefit from.

The youth are busy drinking and doing drugs because of lack of employment. People can’t start a business. People are not spending money. Talk and no action. I disagree with you. The problem is that we have people who used to get handouts from the previous government and now that there is no such a thing, these people are complaining. There are now stringent measures put in place so that procurement processes, resource allocation etc are done based on merit. Of course the process will take a bit of time to ensure recovery from the plundering caused by the previous government to clear up but Zambia is definitely on the right economic and social trajectory.
