Lessons for trading success, and how to crush your goals | Adam Ryan

Full show notes: chatwithtraders.com/ep-012-ada... - - This week I’m pumped to introduce an incredibly humble, relatable and overall genuine trader, Adam Ryan of Optic Trader. (He’s also our first guest Canadian guest).
Just like the majority of those who make it, Adam will not hesitate to tell you, he was no overnight success. He went through the same struggles and faced the same challenges that many of us can relate to.
However, the one thing that set Adam apart was the fact he never gave up. And it was that determination and perseverance that landed him in the hot seat with a trading mentor, who was able to steer him in the right direction.
Jumping forward a few years Adam has forged his own method for success, and actively trades Crude Oil, Gold, and the S&P 500 futures.
During this interview you will hear about his journey on a much deeper level, and you’ll pick up many great pointers, especially around the topic of setting goals and how to actually achieving them.

Practical points from 012: - Beware of educators that don't trade themselves. - Revenge trading leads to more losses. - There is no overnight success. - A mentor quickens the proccess, but deep understanding and own observations are still needed. - Shorter term moves are easier to predict than larger moves (Adam uses top-down multi-frame analysis). - Value and price can diverge (market profile analysis), Adam keeps an eye on value changes during the day (ie: balance failure). - Avoid using indicators in the beginning, learn price and market structure first. - There is no holy grail. - When setting a goal, also write down the steps needed to reach it, modify those along the way. - Stay on simulator until profitable. - Don't fixate on the money, fixate on the process.

@@Pathlogos If that is right for you, fine. I will not talk anyone away from price action. The reason is that it does not fit my personality. Trading with price action is like getting a new car with lots of modern technology. You get strict prohobitions about using anything else than throttle, brake, steering wheel, turn signal lever and transmission stick. It bores me not to use all the possibilities out there. When using indicators I can quantify a move. I can measure if it is best to get in at a certain level or not trade at all. All this said. Since this year has gone since I posted the comment I guess I use a bit of price action as I look at wicks. They normally indicate that I should stay away from a trade. If I go for a breakout I prefer many small candles before the big one breaks out. Trading with indicators is about combining several of them. At least 2. There is probably not a single indicator that is profitable on its own. The aroon might be on some currency pairs, but it won't be by much. Also I prefer indicators to measure volatility. Bollinger bands will tell me more than just looking at candle sticks and think that they seem to move quite little. When a trend has started and I want to enter on a pullback I find it unbelieveably tiresome to wait for a hammer on a moving average or on a Fibonacci level. Seriously. How often do they appear? Finally. I am a trend trader. I try to jump on that candle or combination of candles that tries to leave the consolidation zone and just keeps flying away. I don't know how you do that with price action. Last point. Indicators are a lot easier to backtest. And it gives a reliable backtest. I backtested trend lines and I was at least 70 % right. Yes obviously because I never jumped in late as you do when you trade live.

  • @Pathlogos

@@SSEnrich thank you for your reply and detailed explanation for the reason. I do now understand what your trying to say. There are more reasons to trade or stay away from a trade rather just solely based on price action. I'll add few indicators back, but the biggest hurdle for me adding indicator to price action is that my focus solely shifts on indicator rather price action. Could you help me with that since I started with indicators before even knowing what price action is, hence I naturally deviate towards indicators when i tried to use them together which i only did last week during live trading.

  • @SSEnrich

@@Pathlogos I guess I could point you to a video explaining 4 stages of how the market moves. Generally if you trade trends you should trade with the trends. That is not true for all currency pairs. Chances are that you might not even trade forex. As this podcast is heavily stocks based. So I don't know what works for stocks and I am not used to gaps. But sure I can give tips if you want. There is information about how tobtrade everywhere, but you will probably get some bad information along the way too. The reason might be that prople will not give the beat tips as quite often you will have to pay courses to the those.

@@SSEnrich currently am doing Al Brooks trading course. So far done one year, just marginally above my trading capital. But the problem I am struggling with is I don't have a reliable repeatable strategy. I have learnt so many set ups through price action that i think I really don't have a set up that I trade and can back test. All seems gambling to me at the moment due to lack of the above mentioned scenario.
