Thank you for taking the time to write it out to show us and so we can write it down for us to learn and also for showing us up close to how you are plucking and in what order to pluck them in. This is going to be a really big help in teaching us how to practice Travis picking I was looking for exactly this type of lesson on Travis picking I am happy that I came across your site. And I have heard of John Prime and I wanted to learn one of his songs that I heard on KZread but I can't remember which one it was but I do have it saved in my library on my iPad I hope you have that one I really wanted to learn his songs though he is an amazing but not well known but should be artist. So thank you for being here and teaching us how to Travis Pick.

Fantastic! Your lil chart at the beginning was all I needed. Thank you. It also helped to play along for that ridiculous amount of time so now I can practice it for another ridiculous amount of time....and if I'm lucky, my fingers will remember while I'm focussing on the song! Seriously, thank you.

Scott ..thank you for this chart..A KIND AND THOUGHTFUL EFFORT FOR YOUR WATCHERS.....this visual is incredibly helpful.. I had begun making my own charts..recently stumbled across Don Ross from Jam Play who uses the numbers of the strings picked in his video..he repeats them like a phone number...very helpful......but an actual chart from the person creating the video is especially useful...I can see your chart in my mind's eye....am old girl trying to learn Travis picking and I adored John Prine...his humanity is unrivaled in playing and lyrics ..THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

"In Spite of Ourselves" Is one where Prine uses Travis picking. Altho he uses one "unorthodox" finger sequence. Traditional Travis still works. I think.

Thanks so much for this. It helped me a lot, this is the way I learn, in patterns. To the others saying "well John didn't do it this way"... whatever. You're not John (ffs). Again, thank you for posting this, much appreciated.

Good stuff and thanks for the effort to bring it to us.... on the counting you might consider describing it as .....one, two and, three and, four and...... that is what you are playing and that gives it the rhythm it deserves. Many thanks.

John Prine only uses his thumb and index finger to pick. He calls it a mistake that turned into a style. I would like to see someone teach it the way he does it. He doesn't use the traditional Travis picking method.

Isn't it weird that when you trying to teach Travis picking it is harder to teach it than to just play it normally, I have seen a lot of people that give lessons on line on how to Travis pick and they have no problems playing it at normal speed but when they try to teach it they slow it down so we can learn it but they struggle with it themselves I think because they have to stop and think of which string and in what order to play it, I find it curious.

His style would be the same as everyone else's travis picking, only he picked all the other notes with the one finger like you said. Only way someone could learn that is by doing it...alternating bass with the thumb, everything else with the index. Pretty tough, easier to do it the traditional way for us mortals. If you want to see another Travis picker who used only his index, search Doc Watson, maybe "Deep River Blues" where, unfortunately they don't show his right hand fingering til half way through the vid, but when you see it you'll go "holy shit" or something...then a step faster in "Black Mountain Rag" where it's so old they only show a picture of Doc Watson but close your eyes and imagine someone doing that with the index only. Oh, and if his eyes look funny in the vid, it's because he's blind. Yup, does it all by feel, can't see a thing! ✌🏼

@@brucehanover890 According to John is was much easier. I heard him talk about it in an interview. He said that he tried and tried to learn Travis picking the conventional way and just never could get it. He said it was too hard. He said he started using just one finger and it was much easier. That's when he made the statement about a mistake becoming a style.
