I can ALWAYS count on you to answer my questions!! Best teacher ever!! I am a die hard cross stitcher, but I was gifted a box of vintage sewing items and things and I Found a half done needlepoint in the box and it immediately reminded me of my grandmother who always did needlepoint. So of course the first thing I did was plan on learning a new skill so I could finish it. Before I dove in I watched some videos to get the engine roaring and that basket stitch eluded me. All the videos speaking Poles and steps and 1-2 / 3-4 I just couldn’t understand. All you said was count one thread over and one thread up or down. Waaallaaaa!! Totally understood it. Thank you for expanding my skills once again!! First drop of the needle, perfect basket weave on the correct pole totally understanding those steps!! Your the best

I’m definitely enjoying this lesson and I had to go purchase the kit-I have done embroidery in the past and taught myself how but for now with needlepoint I figure why not do lessons to learn especially since You’re so generous to offer these lessons for free! I really appreciate it. Thank You for Sharing Your time and knowledge! Hugs and Smiles-Marie

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have had so much difficulty trying to learn this stitch but your mantra of “up one, over one” etc. was very helpful. I am now going to order the kit and give it a try.

It does feel like a little mantra when I'm saying it over and over :) And some days I feel like I'm channeling Bob Ross the painter :) I'm glad it helps!

I'm excited to see you bring counted canvas lessons into a cross stitch world! It is so much fun and quicker than counted cross stitch. I love to do both types of needlework. However, I am puzzled by the way you taught the basketweave stitch. I have always been taught to begin at a vertical thread and work down over the vertical thread, thinking of that vertical thread as a pole to slide down. You would then go back up crossing over the horizontal thread (thinking of it as climbing the stairs). Also to end the thread, I was taught to run my tail vertically or horizontally because if it is run under the stitches diagonally it will appear as a bump on the front.

Hi Carol. I do love counted canvas and really love doing both. I did start by a vertical thread, I just worked up instead of down. The instructions we put together show it going down. You can do it in either direction. You're right about the tail, but I'm not too fussed as long as you can't see it on the front. You'd be hard pressed to perceive that tail on the front of the canvas :). The rules given to us come from lots of great experience, and for every rule, there's usually an exception. I'm just trying to keep it easy and fun without getting folks bogged down. And I do like to show different paths :)

There is a free online program called pic2pat where you can upload a picture and create a free printable cross stitch design. I know folks who've used it and had great results. I'm sorry about your sweet dog :(

@@SassyJacksStitchery ok i have managed to get 12ct canvas and bought needles and used the pic2pat site to convert my pic. I selected 12 when converting the pic so hopefully it should work out. The picture that i got is made up of squares of diferent colours. Im not sure how to go about it using this picture. What stitch should i use? It also says 60 colours 60 skeins. I dunno what skeins means. I havnt done much research but thought id ask you for any tips first
