Welcome to Lesotho. Tucked away in the heart of South Africa is the kingdom of Lesotho, known to locals as the Kingdom of the Sky and to travelers as the Switzerland of Africa. As the nickname suggests, Lesotho is mostly made up of rolling hills and dramatic, rugged peaks of the Maluti mountains.
Lesotho, officially the Kingdom of Lesotho, is a landlocked country enclaved by South Africa. It is a mountainous country, situated in the Maloti Mountains, and contains the highest mountains in Southern Africa. Lesotho has an area of just over 30,000 km squared and has a population of about 2 million. Lesotho is well known for its breathtaking scenery, which includes snow-capped mountain ranges during the winter. This is the coldest country in Africa.
It is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000 metres (3,281 ft) in elevation. Its lowest point of 1,400 metres (4,593 ft) is thus the highest lowest point of any country in the world. Over 80% of the country lies above 1,800 metres (5,906 ft). This is one of the reasons why it is so cold.
Because of its elevation, Lesotho remains cooler throughout the year than other regions at the same latitude. Most of the rain falls as summer thunderstorms. In Maseru and the surrounding lowlands, it often reaches 30 degrees Celsius or 86 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. Winters can be cold with the lowlands getting down to −7 degrees Celsius or 19 degrees Fahrenheit and the highlands to −18 degrees Celsius or 0 degrees Fahrenheit at times. Snow is more common in the highlands between May and September, though the higher peaks can experience snowfalls year-round.
Whether you’re into water sports, skiing, snowboarding or mountain biking, Lesotho has it all and more. Home to one of only two ski resorts in Southern Africa, Lesotho is the place to go if you want to hone your skiing or snowboarding skills. Afriski Mountain Resort, situated in the Northern Highlands, has something on offer for every snow bunny, and if that’s not your thing, visiting to check out the scenery is just as good. Did you know that the fictional country of Wakanda, in the critically acclaimed movie, Black Panther, was based primarily on this incredible country? Now you know.

It wasnt lesotho there😁the shots were part of Eastern freestate(Qwaqwa) ! Where Tugela falls begins n d mountains are part of freestate n lesotho! Drakensburg"Maloti" mountain range😉winter is mostly covered in snow bcuz of the high altutude!

Not true!! Its all Lesotho that mountains are Sani Pass the falls is Maletsunyane falls in Semonkong , there's also Afriski, Maseru, Katse Dam too no free state here

Only until recently in 2022 i started doing research on this Continent and it never seize to Amaze me
My Country... as a Mosotho from the lowlands I get chills every time we go up the mountains...It is so peaceful and breath taking...Its like you are in another planet. When you come back from the mountains you feel like a new person, with no destructions but a clear mind, I swear to God...No wonder in Tibat the monks in the mountains have so much peace and satisfaction of being human...its the same feeling when you get to my beloved Maluti mountains...it will humble you!😭😭🤗🤗☺☺

My Grandmother is from Lesotho, and my father shared beautiful tales about his youth days in Lesotho.I am in the US, and often tell my friends to go ski in Africa, many of them thought I had totally lost my marbles. There you have it: It snows,and we Ski, in Africa!!!

I regularly go there for Snowboarding it’s an amazing place, especially when it has a blanket of snow around late July or early August. By the way, a large portion of our fresh water supply in South Africa comes from Lesotho.

Between July and August. I already booked my Snowboarding trip for next year. It’s an amazing place. It cost about $400 for a 3 night weekend of Snowboarding. Including accommodation, snowpass and equipment rentals.

@kyrian Uwandu Australian absolutely matches the African continent in geographic and fauna/flora diversity. It’s not a competition, it’s just a fact, and very interesting. One may like to look up the Wallace Line, this reveals some really interesting facts about it Australia. Africa is amazing too with incredible diversity as per the video. Wow, beautiful! Elevation-wise, Lesotho seems comparable to the US state of Colorado, which is the only US state to lie entirely above 1000 meters. Lowest point: 1011 m, highest point: 4401 m (Mt. Elbert).

The wonders of this land must be a secret deliberately kept hidden from the world lest too many tourists overrun it and spoil its exquisite beauty! I only knew the name Lesotho, but none of these amazing facts. Up to now, I had believed Mount Kilimanjaro was the only place in Africa with significant amounts of snow. Geography is a badly neglected subject in American school systems!

Morocco and Algeria snow every year and have more snow than lesotho, the coldest temperature ever recorded in Africa was in Ifran city, Morocco at -24°C..Morocco and Algeria are non black countries though, but they have a black minority.

Thank you for sharing James, l was born here but spent 45 years in America living mostly in Los Angeles. So when l came back one of the hardest adjustments was dealing with the cold weather cause after living nearly my whole life in sunny California, l wasnt used to such winters and l didnt even know that we had a Ski resort God Bless Lesotho and God Bless Mother Africa.
I was pleased to first read about Lesotho as a kid in the 1990s from an encyclopedia.It was noted for it's snow, which is how I knew it snowed in Africa.
Lesotho and Bhutan the two countries for me what I have to see before... well, they are on the so called "bucket list". 😍

Some of the lyrics are Sotho but the Music is from South Africa which has a high indegious baSotho population. Infact there are more baSotho in South Africa than Lesoto. Im dissapointed they didnt use Traditional baSotho music
