Does it snow in Africa? // 9 coldest African countries.

Africa is often the subject to many false misconceptions and one of them is that it is one huge hot country.
Well, here is some truth. Africa is very diverse climate wise. In fact, more diverse than you may think. Whereas some areas of Africa are indeed dry and hot, many are not.
Just come to Kenya in July and the cold that will bite you will immediately change your mind.
Enough said, here are 9 African countries that are familiar with snow.
1. Kenya
Kenya is a beautiful curvy country. She has hills, mountains, plains and valleys that gently caress her terrain and you know what that means? It means most of the Kenyan interior is high altitude, which explains the mild temperate weather.
Many high altitude areas of Kenya like the peaks of Mt Kenya which is Africa’s second highest mountain, Nyandarua Ranges and some towns in central Kenya like Nyahururu, Elburgon and Limuru do indeed receive varying amounts snow during the cold months of June, July and August.
2. Lesotho
Lesotho is a Southern African nation which is also the highest elevated nation overall in the world. This and its location in Southern Africa makes it prone to icy snowy winters. From June to August the nation is transformed into a winter wonderland with temperatures dipping to negative 20 in the highlands. Tourists and locals often treat themselves to great winter skiing in Afriski Mountain Resort.
3. South Africa
Winter in South Africa is June to August. It is generally dry and cool, with snow falling in the mountainous regions. South Africa does have four seasons-summer, fall, winter, and spring-only they are flipped from the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere.
Winter brings its own crop of stunning vistas. Excitingly, you could see snow in mountainous areas, from the high passes of the Drakensberg to the peaks around Cape Town. Sutherland in the Karoo, reputed to be South Africa’s coldest town with temperatures below 0°C/32°F, receives snowfall every winter.
4. Algeria.
Algeria boasts a far more varied climate than you might expect from a country of which more than four-fifths of the land area is part of the Sahara Desert. At altitudes above 900m winter snow is regular, often lying on the ground for several days, or even weeks. Between the months of November and February many areas around the Atlas Mountains are often blanketed with layers of thick snow.
5. Tanzania.
Tanzania is home to Mt Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. On any given day, as long as the peak is not engulfed in thick mist, you will treated to fantastic spectacle of huge glaciers and snow covered peaks.
6. Tunisia.
Temperature is in the range between 16 °C and 18 °C but in a blink of an eye a freezing rain may fall. At night temperature drops to about 7 °C and below 0 °C in highlands and deserts. Peaks of Atlas Mountains are often covered with snow caps. Tunisian winters are long, cold, windy, and partly cloudy and there are lots of winter activities to keep you occupied.
7. Morocco
Morocco follows the same seasonal pattern as any other northern hemisphere country. Winter lasts from November to January and sees the coldest, wettest weather of the year. Snow in Morocco is not unusual. Two ski resorts in the Atlas Mountains-one near Marrakech and the other near Ifrane-experience fairly regular snowfall each January and February.
8. Uganda
The Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda get regular snowfalls that cover them. The Ruwenzori mountain chain, includes Africa's third highest peak (Mount Margherita: 5,109 m). The region's glaciers, waterfalls and lakes make it one of Africa's most cold but beautiful alpine areas. The permanent snow line stands at about 14,800 feet (4,511 m) on the east and 15,900 feet (4,846 m) on the west. In Uganda , August is the coldest month and you will see many Ugandans in heavy clothes.
9. Ethiopia
The period from December to February can be classified as Ethiopia's 'winter' season when the overall climate is a little cooler than during the rest of the year. Some snowfall is experienced in the Simien Mountains in northern Ethiopia, north east of Gondar in Amhara region, which are part of the Ethiopian Highlands. The Simiens are remarkable as being one of the few spots in tropical Africa where snow regularly falls.

Yes South Africa has a different climate cause the 80% of the land is under the Tropic of Capricorn till the 35°S of the Eastern Cape, but mostly because also the 70-80% of the land is mountainous with highlands. And I'm saying all those, because even Cape Town and Port Elizabeth which are the southernmost cities, they have a type of Oceanic-Mediterranean climate and not a clear temperate. Most temperate-European, could be characterized the mountainous climate of Lesotho, than the rest average area of South Africa. I can't say that South Africa has the same cold in winter, even as Greece and the southern half of Italy. It's much more milder.

Colorado also has the highest average elevation of any US state, and the highest point in the entire Rocky Mountain range. Colorado lowest point = 1011 m, Lesotho lowest point = 1400 m. Colorado average elevation = 2070 m, Lesotho average elevation = 2161 m. Colorado highest point = 4401 m (Mt. Elbert), Lesotho highest point = 3482 m (Thabana Ntlenyana). The capital cities are also at comparable elevations: Colorado capital (Denver) = 1560 - 1730 m, Lesotho capital (Maseru) = 1600 m.

So weird how you narrated SA so differently to Lesotho. Yet Lesotho is an enclave within SA, completely surrounded by SA - meaning what happens in Lesotho is happening in SA, in the same EXACT way. Lesotho is part of a contiguous region you mention as the Drakensberg Highlands, which is a vast region, spanning Lesotho and several provinces in SA (which provinces happen to be far bigger than Lesotho). The snow can be quite thick and snows regularly every winter. Temperatures regularly dip into the negative teens, same happens in Lesotho, as its part of the same Highlands region, which spans the southern and central parts of South Africa (which is where you find Lesotho). Oh and even without snow, temperatures in the winter months of SA (and by extension, Lesotho) regularly dip well below freezing, regularly.

Hi! Great video mate 👍 You’re right about Tunisia. Winter can be cold and very long. Usually starts from Mid November till late March. The North West and Central West of the country gets lots of rain. Ain Draham gets over 60 inches of rain a year and snow falls every year. Towns like : Thala, Makthar, Sakiet Sidi Youssef and Kesra have a very harsh winter. Colder then some European countries due to the altitude. Over 1000 m The lowest temperature ever recorded in Tunisia was -12 -20 in Algeria And -25 in the highland of the Altas mountain in Morroco. The east coast of Tunisia has a relatively mild winter but NW and CW are bad. In some area the snow can reach up to 1,5 m and last for weeks on the Ground. Back in the 60s and 70s The snow falls in December and only melt in March in NW of Tunisia. But then with global warming it gets less and less every year.

One of the reasons why Africa's climate and weather is so varied and diverse is because large parts of the continent are made up of high altitude plateaus that greatly impact the weather patterns on the continent. This is why for example you have places like the interior of Kenya experiencing something more closer to a temperate to subtropical climate despite being located in an equatorial latitude, with equator literally dividing the country in half. This is also why, despite the country being right on the equator, there are literally no tropical rainforests in the country, with most of the vegetation being made up of subtropical savanna, similar to what's found in the northern parts of South Africa, like in the Kruger National Park. The Highveld region of South Africa is another example of a case where the climate is influenced by altitude. The region, which encompass mostly the central parts of the country's interior to the west of the Drakensberg Mountains, is a high altitude plateau that sits at an altitude of between 1000m and 1800m above sea level. Despite it being located at what should be a subtropical latitude, the region experiences a more temperate climate similar to that of Midwestern US. For some perspective, the east coast of South Africa for example, particularly along the KZN coast (Durban is often referred to as the place of the eternal summer), which is pretty much in the same latitude as the Highveld, but at sea level, experiences a typical subtropical climate with warm wet summers and relatively mild dry winters, in contrast to the Highveld where winters can be bitterly cold, with even the occasional snowfall every now and then. And then of course there's the mountain regions like the Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains of South Africa and Lesotho respectively, the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and to a lesser extent the Ethiopian Highlands, that experience a more Alpine climate similar to that of the European Alps and Himalayas, hence Lesotho is often referred to as the Switzerland of Africa, because the two countries do pretty much share a common climate.

South Africa 🇿🇦 is known for snow, and even Table Mountain sometimes get snow. In Worcester, we had snow in December, the height of summer. In the same town, 54°C in the shade, 76°C in the sun, was recorded. Snow, however, is not alien to South Africa 🇿🇦 as cut-off low pressure systems introduce frosty air from the faraway Antarktika. When we don't have flood, it's either very hot, very cold or very dry. I am almost 63; I still remember the three feet of snow we had in 1966.
