It's hard for younger people to realize how revolutionary the lyrics to "You Don't Own Me" were in 1965. Women speaking for themselves just wasn't done back then...at least not in white pop music. You might have heard that type of thing from Aretha, or "Big Momma" Thornton before her, but you never would have heard it on white radio. That was an absolutely revolutionary song. Oh, and about songs from the 1960's being so short, that was pretty much because radio would not play anything over three minutes until the late '60's when the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) radio format came into being. John Lennon famously said that his philosophy on songwriting was "2 minutes and out" The reason that 3:00 minutes and shorter were the standard was because the old 10-inch 78 RPM records that were the standard between 1911 and the early 1950's could only fit 3 minutes per side. 45 RPM records (introduced in 1949) could fit 4.5 minutes a side, but it took years for people to start taking advantage of it.

A comparable song that also impacted me as a young person at the time was Society's Child by Janis Ian about black/white interracial relationships. She wrote it when she was 13 years old. Leslie Gore was 17 years old when she sang You Don't Own Me.

@@clairemcdaniel1253 Yeah, Leslie Gore went off to college (Sarah Lawrence) and the music business changed, so she was effectively washed up as a chart force by the time she was 21. Similarly, Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las had a number of hits and 19 singles released starting when she was 15, and she was out of the business until her 2006 comeback album(40 years later!) by the age of 18. The business really chewed up and spit out young girl singers back then.

For her to sing this, with its message of not being under someone's thumb, was a huge and early message to girls and women everywhere. Great first step for women in history.

My late sister was almost 14 when that track was released. She once told me that song was revolutionary for it's time as most girl group songs up until that time had the girl worship their boy. Very rarely ever did a pop song by a young woman outwardly declare their independence.

First Wives Club with Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn (1996). They came together after a best friend committed suicide (Played by Stockard Channing) after her husband left her for a younger woman. They decided to help other first wives by dedicated an organization to their friend. At the end they sing the song because when they were teenagers it was their song.

This reminds me of my ex husband telling me that according to the bible, he owned me. I had to correct him and remind him that since he didnt believe in the bible, and thought it was a work of fiction, that whole thing of me obeying his word like it was the word of God, was null and void. When men think they OWN Women...LOL ::Scoff/Eye Roll:: The women that allow men to "own" them (oftentimes radical religious folks that take the bible literally/verbatim...where women think they are to submit entirely to their men-gross, af!)...tragic, to say the least!

I grew up listening to Leslie Gore songs. She was ahead of her time. I was 15 yrs old when this came out. So many changes going on the 60's. It was quite a decade!

Awesome song! She has a lovely tone to her voice. These older songs are just so honest and sincere.

These days, the songs are so over produced. They've got autotune and things like that to make anyone sound 'good.' You don't even have to have any talent. It's more about image and sex appeal. I like emotional expression and good lyrics with some substance.

Lesley's first big #1 hit record was "Its My Party" produced by no other than Quincy Jones who both were signed to Mercury records at the time..Lesley and Quincy remained friends till her death from cancer..I remember seeing Quincy being interviewed and asked about Leslies recent passing..Tears flooded his eyes as he tried to describe how deeply her passing had affected him..PS The movie your thinking of is First Wives Club where the ladies close out the end of the movie singing this song...

Leslie Gore: Beautiful, Amazing voice, Sadly passed away in 2015 at only 68 years old. Watch that song live. Another one she did was called "She's a Fool" She started out at only 16 with a number one hit "It's My Party", then "Judy's Turn To Cry" One of the greats of my time. Always wished she could have done a song with Elvis Presley. They would have been invincable.

And interestingly, "It's My Party" has the opposite message of "You Don't Own Me" - she realizes her boyfriend has taken up with her best friend, and she collapses into tears. That's an understandable reaction but isn't the same strong, independent attitude of the latter song.

Every song was about the same length as this one for decades. Originally there had been a technical reason for it, but even after Long Playing records were first sold in 1948, which could accommodate much longer tunes, everybody still stuck to the standard. It wasn't till The Doors did "Light My Fire" and the Chambers Brothers did "Time Has Come Today" in 1967 that longer songs started to get played on the radio, and it was considered a very big deal to hear these in their full length. AM stations only played the long versions at night, not during the day when numerous commercials had to be run constantly. After awhile, in about 1970, it became normal for longer songs to be recorded and played on FM radio.

Lesley Gore, Brenda Lee and Connie Francis were the big 3 female singers of the early 60's. All were great. Enjoy your videos.

I was 13 when this song came out and I have loved it since day one. As a young teen I felt this song to my bones. Girls back then were supposed to give in to what a Man said. Girls and women were just really beginning to speak up and becoming independent. This song really helped women to start speaking up for themselves. Hi Ty. I'm gonna give you a quick bit of info. In the 1930's there was the first song written and sung about Wife Abuse. It was a huge hit, and sung by Fannie Brice, Bessie Smith and others. The name of the song is "My Man". TY, Don't try to do That Song here. You might not be strong enough, because your Empathy will pick you up and throw you down. Recently we went to a Pokey LaFarge concert at "Off Broadway" down on Broadway and Lemp. His opening act was Abbey Waterworth. One of the songs she sang was My Man. How ever many in the crowd were drunk by then, just got sobered up. I know she was just showing off her talent, but she SLOWED it down when came to the words "I know he beats me". It was written during the wild times between the 2 wars. I cried, because my dad beat my mom.

You must probably heard this in the DC Movie "Suicide Squad" when Harley Quinn comes into the picture ... It was also redone by a singer named Grace. Now, Lesley Gore was the Princess of Rock and Roll in the 1960s. She started out at the age of 17 in 1963 (the year I was born! ) with "It's My Party". Quincy Jones was her producer and put her on the map. She had a follow up to "It's My Party" with "Judy's Turn To Cry" which I think is a better song, however it didn't reach number one as "It's My Party" did. This song "You Don't Own Me" was held from being number one on the charts by The Beatles. It only went up to number two on the charts. It was a revolutionary song for women, back then, and became an anthem. The year was 1964. Lesley Gore also was in the TV show "Batman" as Cat Woman's side kick - Pussy Cat. Unfortunately, Lesley Gore died at the age of 68, back in February 2015 from lung cancer. The hairstyle she is wearing was called The Flip and I don't know ANYONE who wore it better! :) .... NOW, to hear THE QUEEN of MUSIC, you MUST listen to CONNIE FRANCIS!!!!! ... BRENDA LEE is another!

love all the comments. If any of you remember 45's, they were the 7" vinyl records with the big center whole. In 1963 when Leslie Gore was a junior in high school she release It's My Party (and I'll cry if I want to). It went to #1 for four weeks and sold a million copies. The flip side of the record was You Don't Own Me. The following year 1964 it went to #2 for two weeks. Side note Quincy Jones was the producer.

It was in a Toyota commercial last year. I remember when it first came out. Leslie Gore also sang It's My Party and the sequel Judy's Turn To Cry.

Teen of the 80's here. I first heard this song in one of the biggest 80s movies, Dirty Dancing! I almost wore out that cassette! Especially that song. I was such a good girl would never have thought of going against my parents wishes so playing that song made me feel like a rebel! Lol

This song caused some arguments back in the day. Gals were starting to stand up for themselves in small ways and the guys weren't liking it too much. Kind of funny how this was sort of an "anthem" song. Good tune though that I enjoyed dancing and singing to.

This song really gets to me. I was in a 10 year abusive relationship, he told me what to wear, who to see, what music to listen to, how to speak, not allowed to be myself. He went through all my clothes throwing out things I wasn't allowed to wear. 10 years I put up with that. What a waste of my life. I kinda got my own back by playing The Eurythmics Thorn In My Side over and over. He still didn't realise the song was aimed at him.

My niece Kori and I were sitting on my brothers deck one day and she looked at me and I started singing it and we sang really loud and my brother was going crazy!!! It's amazing how much Meghan Trainor follows in Lesley Gore's footsteps. If you listen to this then, say, All About That Bass, you can kind of feel the progression of this kind of girl power pop.

I just learned that this song was written by a man that heard a girl and her boyfriend arguing a toss from his studio. She said every word in the song. It was verbatim to what she said. She was pissed. He heard it, ran back to his office and wrote the melody.

First heard this on the Ed Sullivan Show in the early 60s. She was on his show a lot and actually may have gotten famous from her appearances. Back then Ed Sullivan was “America’s Show” on Sunday nite at 8pm. Back when we had three channels (or less in some cases).

It's true that "You Don't Own Me" is a strong message for a female to have sung in the early 1960s, but keep in mind that the lyrics of Lesley's other hits like "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry", and especially "Maybe I Know" stuck completely to the required feminine role of being subordinate to men at the time.

Back in the '60's, top 40 radio was king. Everyone tuned in to listen to their favorite songs. It was commercial radio, so they constantly ran commercials. The average time of most records was 3:00 minutes, or less. The less the better. That way, they could play more commercials around the music. Long songs, like Hey Jude, at over seven minutes, cut into their profits.

I can still see Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton in The First Wives Club in the end where they are dancing down the street to this song.
