No autotune. The effect on her voice was achieved by having the artist re-record the track and laid out with the original as a second singer thus giving the final sound like two people singing. The Beatles were fond of this effect and used it quite extensively. It tends to give the sound more depth.

Actually it's tcalled automatic doubletracking (ADT), which means she sang it only once, but the machine recorded it twice with a short delay between both tracks, wich creates a fuller sound. Lennon especially was taken by this technique because it reminded him of Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" and the early SUN records, which had a lot of echo on them.

@@netzahuacoyotl I really wasn't going to dive in here because I don't know when ADT was invented. That said, as a 73 year old dude that listened to ALL of this music first hand I vividly recall some songs that the Beatles did where it was so obvious that the singer sang it twice because they did not completely match up! Thank you! Hell, now I have to go through their catalogue to find the damn examples! CURSE YOU AUSTIN SCHELL!

@@boosuedon They used double tracking extensively in the early years, but it wasn’t automated. They had to sing the vocal part twice. It’s a great sound because each performance is a little different. John hated having to sing the part again so Geoff Emerick came up with ADT, which takes the vocal track and mixes it with a slightly delayed copy of the same vocal track. Also cool, but I think just layering individual vocal performances sounds richer.

Lesley Gore, was an American singer, songwriter & actress. At the age of 16, she recorded this pop hit "It's My Party" in 1963. She followed it up with many more hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry" ,"You Don't Own Me", "That's the Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Look of Love" & "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows". Sadly she died in 2015.

Leslie isn't auto-tuned. Her producer simply had her double her lead vocal, or sing the lead twice on separate tracks, with a slightly different EQ and reverb on the two lead vocal takes.

I'm not sure if it was on this song, or one of her others, but there was one time when they had to do a sneaky end run around the Musicians Union, there was a rule in New York that you could not double track the lead vocal, the Union required you to hire a second singer, the producer did not want anybody else's vocal on this track, so he snuck Leslie into the studio in the dark of night to lay down the second lead vocal track.

I gave this 45 to my now husband when we were teens back then. I thought that maybe he wouldn't like or appreciate it but on the contrary he loved it! When I asked what I thought about what she was actually saying he looked at me and said, "you know my mother and grandmother, I've grown up with two tough, speak their own minds women!" That's why today's feminism kind of makes him chuckle! Like he says, now it just means you can scream louder and longer then any man but real toughness comes from within.

She was just so cool! Love this song, and the attitude. Another great reaction. I like your commentary and your energy; nice job! "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar" (Helen Reddy, early 1970s, a bit later than Gore's 1960s hit) but definitely another powerful anthem for the women's movement. I also recommend a beautiful rendition of "Cry Me A River" if you're interested in more Lesley Gore. An interesting trivia bit about Lesley Gore and her brother; they composed a bunch of the songs in the movie "Fame". Very talented duo. All the best.

She had a rough few years career wise. She signed to a few different record labels but nothing hit. So, she started composing instead and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song that was in the movie "Fame"! Leslie Gore was 17 years old when both songs came out in 1963! "It's My Party" was her debut single. Then she did "You Dont Own Me" that came out after that. RIP Leslie Gore! 🙏

This sort of sound was achieved by layering vocals over one another in the studio to create a slighty different sound but Leslie had a very powerful voice. The 60's and 70's were a time when artists and bands were experimenting with sounds they could make in the studio with voices and instruments. But if you didn't have a great voice to start with you just didn't cut it. Phil Specter created his 'wall of sound' in the sixties and in th eseventies ABBA experimented with multi track layering.

Here she's standing up to a man trying to make her his property as it was at that time. Of course Lesley never had a husband she was a lesbian though she did find the love of her life Lois Sasson in 1982 and stayed with her for 33 years until Lesley's death from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 68. This song was such a rebellion against the status quo back then. Women were considered weak, in need of protection, woman's place is in the home and kitchen, "Stand By Your Man" as Tammy Wynette had a huge hit with. Britt. The 2nd half was Judy's turn to cry. This effect was done by Leslie recording the track twice and basically singing harmony with herself. Many TV shows back in the day (not quite so much with country music) used to have the performers lip synch on TV broadcasts. That is the reason you hear the endings fade out. That is how records all ended back in the day.

There are some live performances from TV shows in the mid-60s her singing this song and its raw and she sounds good no matter what no auto-tune. And there's many live versions of her singing this even 20 years ago when she was quite a bit older but her voice was still great and raw you should look it up and you could do what a lot of these other reactors don't do and double up on the same song but different versions live ones and from different shows.

There was no such thing as auto-tune (or even the word) in 1963 -- thank God!!! This was the result of a relatively new technique which, I believe, was referred to as multi-tracking, or over-dubbing, something like that, where the artist does two or more recordings and blends them together to where, in essence, she is singing "with herself." Karen Carpenter was extraordinarily successful and beautiful with this technique!

Lesley's songs do not have any unifying theme. It's My Party was released to radio in the Spring of 1963. You Don't Own Me was released in December 1963. Between "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me" there was "Judy's Turn To Cry" and "She's A Fool" both top five national hits, meaning they sold a lot of records. Immediately after "You Don't Own Me" her records company released "That's The Way Boys Are" in which Lesley's character has given up on changing her boyfriend's behavior. Right after that, Lesley had in release "I Don't Want to Be A Loser" in which she laments that having a broken heart is akin to being a loser in love. Lesley continued to release hits for several years but as she matured and starting to turning out more mature message songs, her audience sort of disappeared and so did she.

She had all of her hits by age 18, before going off to college. By the time she returned to her career the Beatles and Motown had taken over, and her career never recovered. Similarly, Mary Weiss of the Shangri-La's had about 10 hits by age 17, when she quit the business and did not record another album for 40 years. Teenage girl singers with very short careers were not uncommon back then.

Back in those days it was a common technique to have the singer sing along with their recorded track. It gave a full unique sound.

I don't believe autotune was available yet. But they did have an echo or even a gravelly sound with a little button on the floor near the mic stand.

Not auto tuned. Additional female singers singing with her. So will layer their voice tracks one on top of the other. The Carpenters did it by going back into the studio and singing several background harmonies rather than hiring singers

Definitely not Autotuned which was first developed in 1997 and this song debuted in 1963. That's all Leslie, but it sounds like they layered her voice to get that effect.

This song was used in the movie FIRST WIVES CLUB. starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaten, and Bette Midler. It was the story of three “first wives” whose husbands had cheated on them with younger women. And how they banded together for revenge. These three women sang the song and it was a fabulous rendition. There is a video on Utube

She was 17 at the time. If you listen to just the recording it lasts longer. She was talking about the jerks who would date them and thought they own and disrespected them on a date. Pretty powerful singing from such a little girl. LOL!😎

Remember that songs in those days had to be less than about 3 minutes (IIRC) long because that is all that would fit on a 45rpm vinyl disk. The versions on LP albums (long play--that is 33 1/3 rpm ) were sometimes longer.

Yeah, a super cool cut! Looked it up, and she was 17!! WOW. Didn't know Quincy Jones produced it either... Autotune didn't come for a few decades yet, but yeah now that you mention it: interesting production choices on her vocals. They don't strike me as double-tracked, but maybe a "delay" put on, with lotsa reverb thrown around. Hmm, listening again: at the end there are things going on that maybe she does have a double-tracked vocal.

A common practice in those years was echo chamber. It gave the voice a reverberating quality. You might like her first hit song: Sunshine, Lollipos and Rainbows. kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6iNmdumiKTJgrQ.html

Not even close. Lesley's 1960s hits were recorded for Mercury Records. Her first post-Mercury Lp was released by Motown in 1972- about 13 years after the Berry Gordy started the label with Marv Johnson's "Come To Me".

There was no computers for auto-tune. They has big echo rooms and chambers. Also spring reverb and tremolo. You can look up the recording effects of the 50s 60s and 70s.
