Who remembers horse tamer's daughter? I use to sing it at work, when I had a job that I wouldn't get interrupted very often. I sang it a bit slow, too, so it would eat a nice big chuck of otherwise mindless boredom.

Wow--Run, Cthulhu, Run!!! I remember hearing that *once* at a con. Never thought I'd hear it again. Thanks!

As the uploader (not Leslie here!), I have mixed feelings on including that verse in the video. I found it to be a jarring means of soliciting an emotional reaction. I'm definitely not comfortable with selectively removing songs based on changing language norms (esp. given the lack of any other known recordings that would preserve the song.) I'm very open to ideas for a contextualizing content disclaimer in the video description - if anyone has specific thoughts or ideas, please holler! - Eli

it's fine a word is only as important as we make it and if artists can't use it anymore, we got problems :D@@lesliefish_filk

I'm inclined to think that the harm in a word lies in its *intent*, not in its *existence*. There's a big difference between me exhaling "Ah, you dumb Polack" at myself when I do something stupid, and someone calling me a 'dumb Polack' with genuine malice. We won't even get into the battles I've gotten into over people using the phrase "That's so gay" to indicate something they don't like.

Is there a cleaner version of Filksinger's Tomcat anywhere?

You're welcome to download the audio and clean it up further! I'm not aware of any other recordings, beyond home cassette tapes that Mary Creasey may have made. We have about 100 more tapes to digitize, so it may take a very long time. Personally I thought it sounded pretty good. Admittedly that was after doing some noise reduction in iZotope, and adding simulated stereo in Audacity.

@@elig9401 This one is in a big hall so lousy acoustics. Cons are lousy for acoustics. I was thinking it was unlikely she ever did a professional studio version of this, but it's amusing enough if there was one, I'd want it.

@@greyvr4336 Yup. Leslie sung/wrote hundreds of songs after her studio recording era largely ended in the start of the '90s. Unfortunately, anything resembling polished recordings only exist of a few dozen of them.

@@eligoldberg4104 I wish someone would do something about that. I've written to a few up and coming music youtubers suggesting some old covers, but none have gone for it so far.

@@greyvr4336 Given the quality, I'm certain that Barney simply had a video camera running, and we are not getting the actual mix from the soundboard. And given that this was 93, almost nothing was digital yet, so postprocessing video with external audio would have been a lot more work than it would be now.
