Lesley Stahl Discusses Her Interview with Marjorie Taylor Greene | In the News with Jeff Greenfield
Lesley Stahl is one of the great “long distance runners” in American journalism.
From her days as a White House correspondent - the first woman to hold the post - to her 30+ years as 60 Minutes correspondent, Stahl has been an eyewitness to some of the most significant stories of our time. She has traveled the world, and interviewed leaders from Margaret Thatcher to Yasser Arafat to Donald Trump (who walked out of the interview in 2020 when her questions became too probing).
Come hear Stahl talk about her awe-inspiring career marked by political scoops and award-winning investigative journalism - a body of work that won her the Lifetime Achievement Emmy for overall excellence in reporting, as well as never-before-heard stories from the field, and a deep-dive into the most important issues facing our country today.

She's missing the point. The irrational lying is precisely why MTG should not be interviewed unless you are willing to challenge her. You can't apply the old 60 Minutes techniques to this kind of irrationality. The follow up was crystal clear. Stahl should have insisted that MTG show exact evidence of her claims and just wait for a real response. Not the spin. Not the BS answers that MTG already cooked up. Leslie Stahl missed the moment. She just rolled her eyes and moved on. Instead she should have nailed her.

And once again, the mainstream media is failing to rise to the moment. One might expect the media to stop treating Republicans like normal politicians after their "big lie" about a stolen election, their ongoing whitewashing of the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol, their attacks on the FBI and their indifference - if not assent - to racism. Alas, there is little sign that mainstream outlets have dropped their addiction to false equivalence and willful, moral blindness…. These and countless other interviews illustrate the urgent need to reimagine coverage of the GOP. Refusing to confront and expose MAGA Republicans' betrayal of democratic values doesn't make members of the media "balanced." It makes them enablers.

Another way to describe the "BothSiderism cancer" is through the concept of false equivalency. Having a mature, intelligent conservative (yes there are some) to represent the other side of liberalism is true equivalency. The rantings of a school yard "mean girl" does not deserve to be showcased or given credibility. The likely reason 60 Minutes behaved so irresponsibly as to air this drivel was to boost the program's viewership--just another journalistic sell out.

What motivated her to even interview this woman? Sorry I am not impressed. There is no excuse at all. Give air time to those who are going to make a difference and not those who would destroy others. Again I am not impressed and we need women who will do interviews with people who encourage not discourage.

And therein lies the problem: the formulaic profile. MGT is not a normal elected official, and yes, to treat her as such "normalizes" the aberrant. By relying on old-style journalistic practices -- which predate the current political climate in which false narrative trumps facts -- mainstream media are allowing misinformation to poison public discourse. Stahl talks about why it's important for us to know what leaders think. True enough, but the more their thoughts stray from reality, the harder the reporter must work to challenge them. Stahl didn't do that. She treated Greene like a normal politician. "60 Minutes," like the rote Sunday morning news shows, have not kept up with the times.

She sets the whole tone by basically saying she is not going to enjoy this. She also comes off as full of herself because she can not admit how much she failed the MTG interview. She let the American people down by not pressing MTG and instead allowed her to have a platform for her lies. Stahl’s attitude is smug during this interview. She often asks to change the subject and smile. Underneath her behavior is a very uncomfortable person, knowing she failed.

Before the dominance of media in the 20th Century, people were "messaged" by their priest, rabbi, minister, teachers, parents and community. In other words our values were personal or based within our local groups. Not a values system being imposed on us by a media that creates news as a product; or by two political partys and all of the spinoff organizations that have bifurcated the country into basically two opposing systems of thought and values.

The fact that Lesley Stahl still believes she did a good job of interviewing MTG tells me she didn’t, and maybe doesn’t learn. Note, she didn’t answer Jeff Greenfield’s key question about “normalizing”MTG. By avoiding that question she avoids a HUGE issue, and becomes part of the “nice people on both sides” crowd. I also believe Jeff better understood the point on “bad press is still press” (repeated by her furor Tr$&mp many years ago) The “audience of one” was a secondary, not the key benefit. Ms Stahl has much to learn from Jeff Greenfield. He perfectly modeled the tact & savvy he spoke of in challenging with powerful questions, examples and facts. I hope she listened & learned. Proving Stahl May be a long-term face of media but not the brains. No Jeff Greenfield or Barbara Walters! On “pandering” many may only want to hear what they want to hear, but many of us still want facts & true journalism, without normalizing that which harms people, and populations.

I do my best to find multiple sources in order to verify what I hear or read. Whenever possible I use court documents, transcripts, audio and history. As long as I do that I can make an educated decision on what I expect the interviewer to listen to and what I believe they should have forcefully pushed back on. If they don’t push back on things that have been debunked multiple times then I take issue with the interviewer and will be much more skeptical in listening or trusting what they say or who they choose to bring on. There are things where there are not two sides. Actual facts must be established and interviewers can’t allow those facts to be replaced with nonsense, conspiracy theories and lies. To allow this serves no one and can (and often does) perpetuate the lies. There are things that are provable. There must be a line or these people receive a level of undeserved credibility just by being interviewed by someone credible and respected.

Not sure how this could be effectively accomplished, but think about jury selection and/or prep. Think about what the jurors or prospective jurors know about a pending case. Emphasize that what the jurors ultimately decide HAS TO be based solely on what they hear in court. Now apply that here. Ask people who have no idea who Marjorie Taylor Greene is what they think of her based SOLELY on what was represented by the Stahl interview. They'd undoubtedly have no clue whatsoever who Greene is as a person, or what she represents. Their opinions about Greene would absolutely be more positive than ANY rational opinions about Greene ought to be. That means this interview was a complete failure. It's that simple.
