I know right? When I read the book, during volume 2 "Cosette", I felt like crying for this poor, lonely, selfless little girl who is treated like shit by two of the most selfish and ignorant people I've ever heard. It made me wish to help her and love like a little sister. It's that moving. :'-(

One of my favorite musicals on this planet is Les Misérables. Les Mis has multiple character story lines that all coalesce around the 1815 French Revolution, a time in history where the monarchy and nobility class horde the wealth of the nation, spend lavishly on their own selfish indulgences, and look down on the common folk with disgust and dismay. The through line of the musical is one of fighting to overcome adversity, be it Marius literally fighting in the streets of Paris, Fantine fighting to scrape together a decent life for her daughter Cosette, Jean Valjean fighting Javert for his freedom through his life, or Javert fighting himself and his duty to uphold the law or act extrajudicially. The cruel irony of the story is each character arch has a somber, bittersweet ending, regardless of how hard they fought to make life better for themselves or their loved ones. Les Mis is so timeless because in 2021 we all continue this fight. The billionaire ownership class is not at all dissimilar to the French Monarchy of the early 1800’s. Jeff Bezos may not say anything about cake, but you can be sure he’s living lavishly and belittling the common folk in ways that would make Marie Antionette blush. Les Mis is a story we all have in ourselves because we are all fighting for our daily bread while the rich profit off the backs of others. Most of the dialogue in the 2012 film adaptation is communicated through music and song, which further emphasizes the power of emotions through the narrative. The film is an adaptation of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, directed by Tom Hooper, with screenplay by William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg (who also adapted the music), and Herbert Kretzmer. The film stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, and Eddie Redmayne as Marius. I can’t recommend this film adaptation loud enough. With the powerful music, the moving songs and lyrics, and the powerhouse performance of top tier A list movie stars, you are doing yourself a disservice by not seeing this still extremely culturally relevant film.

*Has anyone else noticed the cut of this “I Dreamed a Dream” is different in the final cut that they used in the film?* ie: when she sings “So different from this hell i’m living” it’s WAY more robust in the film like she’s almost yelling. And it’s Softer and uses more head voice in this trailer version.

The scene when Cosette sings with Marius through the gate, with Eponine secretly watching, reminds me so much of 'The Phantom of the Opera' roof scene, when Raoul & Christine are singing 'All I Ask Of You', while Phantom watches them hidden behind a sculpture. Cosette-Raoul - blond hair, Marius-Christine - brown hair, and Eponine-Phantom - black hair. Both their roles & hair colors are matching ;)

I just watched the recent BBC version, that Javert is good.. it was interesting how soft/broken he was at the end version Rush who was still stern as ever, all the way to his death. And that makes sense. I don’t think the BBC Javert needed to gave in so much to show he was mislead through life.

I'm beyond tired of Disney being constantly shoved in my face a lot. Everybody talks about Disney nonstop and never knows when to give it a rest. They annoy me with slogans in their commercials like Show Your Disney Side, I'm Going To Disney World and others that I can't think of right now.

Plus my mother has a crazed obsession with Les Miz that she doesn't know when to stop playing that annoying CD. It's not the movie version that Mom has by the way. Disney would've only have made that movie more painful, more aggravating and more way beyond annoying that it is now that I wouldn't have been surprised if Disney Characters and Celebrities from past and present kept on singing all those Les Miz Songs nonstop just because that it's now part of their mouse company. It's a good thing that it's not.

How many would now actually go and watch the play? For every person who used to ignore it and viewed it as inaccessible to them due to how they perceived it, and has now changed that opinion, that makes this film that much more valuable to contributing to bringing the work to newer audiences. Declaring people who wouldn't see the play or viewed it as uninteresting originally as lacking in taste just further isolates them from appreciating the work.

I watched this weekend. Simply the most beautiful film, most wonderful I've ever seen in my life, and look that I love cinema ... Perfect from start to finish, the songs, the actors, it's another level. Of course that also never cried so much watching a movie, it is hard not be moved by a song or moment. People will watch, do not miss it!! And do not be intimidated because it's musical or a movie is long ... you can not see the time pass as good as the movie is.

It's a tale about redemption. Jean Valjean is imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread and failed attempts to escape prison. At the end of his sentence, he decides to turn his life around. Eventually he becomes mayor of a French town and owner of a factory, and one of the workers Fantine blames him for being cast into a life of prostitution. Feeling guilty, he decides to care for her daughter Cosette when she dies. Meanwhile, police inspector Javert who knew Valjean as a prisoner believes that law-breakers cannot change for the better, and is determined to capture him again. It is based on the highly successful stage play by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, which itself was adapted from the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. This film adaptation is from the Academy Award winning director of The King's Speech, and features Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and an entire ensemble cast. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning three, for Sound Mixing, Hair and Makeup and Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway.
