LES MISÉRABLES - Official Trailer | Amazon Studios

Inspired by the 2005 riots in Paris, LES MISÉRABLES - directed by Ladj Ly - follows Stéphane (Damien Bonnard), a recent transplant to the impoverished suburb of Montfermeil, as he joins the local anti-crime squad. Working alongside his unscrupulous colleagues Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga), Stéphane struggles to maintain order amidst the mounting tensions between local gangs. When an arrest turns unexpectedly violent, the three officers must reckon with the aftermath and keep the neighborhood from spiraling out of control.

    It's called "Les Misérables" because the events in the movie happened in the same city where Victor Hugo wrote his book "Les Misérables"

    @sewagii Yes, the whole movie is totally based on Victor Hugo's Book Les Misérables, except it's an adaptation of Hugo's tale, which took place in 19th Century Paris, some 150 years later in our contemporary society, and in a very specific underworld of our society which is a typical suburban guetto in France, controlled by various mafias or gangs. It's a striking portrait of these French ghettos. I just saw the movie, and I highly recommend it.

  • @pandasan406
    @pandasan4064 жыл бұрын

    It's named that way because the city where the movie is taking place ( also where the director grew up) is where Victor Hugo wrote les Misérables, and weirdly not much seems to have fondamentally changed ever since (at least I think that's what Ladj Ly wanted to show). People keep complaining that the name is misleading and that they should've changed it, but I honestly think that the movie fits much more Victor Hugo's vision and social activism than a few Hollywood movies ever did. The title is perfect.

    I can't believe people here are out merely commenting on police brutality. There's problems with both sides. The kids, or the immigrant community in general, are causing social issues as well. People need to seriously reflect upon their conception of freedom. Freedom without regulation is the greatest source of chaos and inequality.. Efforts from both the people and the government are needed to overcome such crisis.

  • @amakregbou

    @amakregbou

    4 жыл бұрын

    To compare a police force to a bunch of teenagers is a stretch. Especially when the only social issues the kids were comminitting were minor crimes, such as stealing and looting. The movie did not depict one moment where the kids committed violent crimes until what happened to Issa. In my opinion, the over-policing, the fact that they were constantly stopped and frisked and harassed by the police, treated like criminals before any proof that they committed a crime, is what took them over the edge. it's not like the kids were commenting crimes for no reason. In fact, they are NOT the DEMOGRAPHIC that commits a crime with no reason. The root cause of all the minor crimes they committed is poverty and over-policing does not solve poverty, it actually continues the cycle. Now that being said, the police IS the PROBLEM. They're ones getting PAID to "protect and serve". Yet they have no accountability when they commit crimes when they harass and brutalize a bunch of teenagers for no reason. they get away with it over and over. That's why people are only commenting about the police brutality because the police are paid adults who take advantage of their badge.

    @@amakregbou Give me a break with the bleeding heart crap. What was happening to the officers, outnumbered by the pack, as they were initially trying to detain Issa?? Where was their support? Law Enforcement had the right to hold the kid for questioning & to cuff him as he already proved to have the cub in his possession, was a runner, & showed absolutely no respect for authority. He DID steal the Lion cub and should have known full well, at his age, it was wrong. If the two out of the three officers behaved unscrupulously on the job towards the immigrant population leading up to this event, they should have been reprimanded, suspended and or fired from public duty. I would think they were disciplined for their part in the upheaval. The lack of respect for authority today is disgusting & a stain on the Me, Me, Me generation.

    In Russia and in a lot of other seemingly democratic countries such videos, not only from drones, but with tortures and killings come out all the time, and nothing changes in the system. Even the guilty policemen do not serve their terms or even stay at their position. Last week one of those hit a 6 y old kid by a car and killed him. Police told that the kid was drunk and the policeman is innocent. And that is happening every week, actually every day. So this movie doesn't raise the stakes for me...

    I'm Russian too. Such videos don't come out "all the time" in Russia, you're exaggerating. But of course police brutality takes place in Russia, as in any other capitalist country. In the USSR the militia never carried any weapons at all (yeah yeah half the country was sitting in a gulag I know, evil commissars were scaring everybody into submission yeah yeah). Today's policeman look like they're in a war zone. They are the bulldogs of an anti-people regime. So it's no point saying "things are way worse in Russia, so this movie doesn't raise any stakes blabla" it's a lie. This movie is still shocking. Point is, things are *the same* in Russia. With a bit of local charm.

    Tuco Ramirez yes I was at Cannes and saw both and you are one of the one of the only people I know who prefer this film more. Also, there is politics behind the Oscars and Strategy involved and universally American audiences (and the majority of academy voters) like Portrait of a lady on Fire much more than this film. Both would lose to Parasite 2019 anyway, but I’m scared France may not even get a nomination because of this choice.

    are you comparing the Handmaiden situation to this movie being nominated ? The first french black director to be nominated ? When this movie had even better reviews than Portrait in France ? Sciamma has released several films, was in a prestigious cinema school but this man releases his debut film that NO ONE wanted to finance (and he never went to film school) and you think it's bad ? have you even seen the film ? do you understand what it represents to POC in France ? And I'll say it again : the reviews for les Misérables (both press AND public) are INCREDIBLE. But nah you're better off with established white directors being nominated I guess

    L'éloge du 93, this is a movie which glorifies hoodlums from the worst area in France. The kind of area where a white guy would get mugged by a group of 20 senegalese teens on a daily basis. The idea that the police mistreat these guys is laughable. Rocks get thrown at cops, I've never heard of this in the US. A couple years ago some where of these hoodlums threw kerosene in two cop cars and lit it on fire while they were still inside. Two cops were gravely injured and out of the kids who did this, a fraction of them only got 10 to 20 years with chance of parole, so they will only be there for 5 years.
