Leonora Carrington Study Course - 1 -The Early Years

Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) was one of the most creative of the Surrealist artists.
Her paintings are charming, intriguing, enigmatic, and sometimes impenetrable. She was working for nearly seven decades and her output was prolific, covering many topics and styles.
Adam McLean has created a seven-part study course on Carrington's work.

Nowadays, it seems that most art historians drag an artist's work into the commentator's worldview. They ruthlessly press an interpretation onto the work, rather than letting it speak for itself. Adam McLean avoids recontextualising Carrington's art but instead provides background information that can flesh out the readers' appreciation of her paintings, point to the source material from which she drew, the internal links between the complex symbols and show the links between many of her works.
Providing an external narrative to an artist's work can be quite destructive, stealing the viewer's appreciation of a painting by assigning a meaning that was not within the motivation of the artist. Sadly, some art historians elevate themselves above the artist by encapsulating their work in a web of meaning, suggesting that they understand what lay behind the painting more than the artist herself did. This is the folly of Postmodernism, which has polluted art history, perhaps more than any other discipline.

Dear Adam, I stumbled across Leonora's "Down Below" in the Max Ernst Museum in Cologne, started researching her artwork and feel like having entered a whole new world in a way I have rarely felt about any artist. I love your series and am watching one part per day. Thank you for sharing your research and for all the time and effort you put into making it so accessible.

I could listen to your narration all day long. I'm hooked on your course now. Came here from following a link about Remedios Varo, a friend of hers. Thank you so much for such a well-put together video. I didn't realise she was still alive in the 90s. I don't think the lecturer knew that.

Thank you so much for this series, I can't wait to watch it all. I saw several Carringtons in the Angels of Anarachy exhibition in Manchester a few years ago. Remarkable in books, but utterly stunning in real life. Cheers!

This is great.Thank you for all your research and insight. Her work scares me and inspires me at the same time.A lot of my own work comes out scary and "Halloweenish".I try to censor it but that's not healthy.I feel encouraged to express myself mor after looking at her work.I never saw any of it when I was in art school.

Same. I saw two of her works at art school and there was no comment or study of her except that she was a "female surrealist". Research needs to be ongoing.

Yes I have thought about this. Unfortunately I do not have much time due to the other projects in which I am involved. There is some analysis of her work on my Surrealism course lesson 10 kzread.info/dash/bejne/lHaMmbuhpqydh84.html
