I guess I figured out why I like watching Leon. As a child, when I was about 10 years old, my grandmother brought me a live crayfish. Crayfish were sold for cooking, but my grandmother brought them to me as a pet. I took a bucket of water for him, threw some stones "for fun" into it and planted a crayfish in it. He wandered along the bottom, and I watched him. In the evening of the same day, my mother and I put him in a small bucket of water and carried him to the same river where he was caught. This is a very touching memory, thank you for reminding me of it. It's good for people to see that animals deserve a good life too.

When I was about 10 years old, my father saved a wet, half-dead mouse that lay in the gutter. My mother covered the mouse with a handkerchief and put it in the pocket of her apron, to revive her with warmth. In the evening she war released in our garden. I was sad but understood the necessity. 🍒

Make sure you leave the old exoskeleton in for a while. They sometimes consume part or all of it to regain calcium. Also in the wild Lobster will lock themselves away by shoving sand into the opening of their caves. You should provide him with a bit more of a cave in his new tank to help lower stress. Moulting is stressful as it is and when panicked they can sometimes rush it, cause them to loose a claw or 2, which he can regrow, but never to the same size and it costs alot of energy. Also now that he is becoming a chonky boy, make sure you support his claws when removing him from the tank as their weight alone is enough to break them off at the joint. I am a Marine Biologist and worked in an Aquarium where we had a 50 year old lobster who was regularly handled for school tours and the like, hence the random lobster knowledge.

A question to the nautic biologist: How do these animals harden their shell after molting. I once kept spiders and they just let it dry on air to harden it. But how to dry something under water?!

.. Yeah and that's why listening to so called "experts" is very often not a good idea. It's most probably like Brady said, the decomposition of Leon's old armor would contaminate that small aquarium. Leon doesn't live in the open ocean where the toxins used to just dissapate at large.

In the summer here in Maine, when people buy lobster to eat, they are mostly “soft shell”, but right after they shed it’s pretty soft. Hard shell lobster are more expensive, because they are full of meat. This was so interesting to watch.

The whole moulting process takes a lot of energy for any and all lobsters. You can see evidence of that by how Leon is moving so slowly. You can see how he is trying to push out of his old shell and struggles at times. It's a known fact that some older lobsters die during the moulting process, probably because they are bigger and don't have enough energy to struggle out of their old shell. This was intriguing and educational to watch and has added to my appreciation of the cycle of life. I have avoided eating lobster ever since I started following Leon, thank you Leon for just being you.

I am happy to hear that. There are many people who will watch Leon, love him and root for him, but they will compartmentalize that and will continue eating non-Leon lobsters. But since your ethics are affected by Leon, If you eat cows or pigs or really any animal, you will stop after you've gotten to know them too. Any mammal or bird is thousands of times as intelligent and emotional as a lobster, and you will love them just as much as you love your dog or cat. I knew a couple of cows because we lived near a small homestead farm when I was young. As soon as I looked into their big caring eyes, I was finished eating beef. I stopped eating all animals soon after. I've been a vegetarian for decades...and it all started because I got to know some cows.

@@mygirldarby thank you for your sermon, but my decision to not eat lobster is rather circumstantial. You're right, people tend not to eat animals to whom they've become emotionally attached, like dogs, horses, and cats. Lobster meat tastes awesome, but is easily overcooked, and then it becomes too chewy at that point. Plus I don't eat lobster every day, so it was not a big sacrifice to give it up altogether as a way of appreciating both Leon's life journey and the author's efforts at showing us its life journey. However, I have not seen anyone make a decision to save a pig nor a bison nor a chicken from slaughter, turn it into a pet and basically spend money and effort to give us a lens into the animal's own life journey, through which we as the viewer can become emotionally attached. Even if you were to show me a link proving me wrong, I still will happily eat crab, fish, bison, pork or chicken not only because it is hard for me to become emotionally attached to those animals, but also because a long time ago, I decided that I am happier eating meat as sustenance. Of course, I am still thankful and appreciative of the animal's sacrifice so that I can eat meat. And I'll probably be eating less cows because they have become too expensive.

Depending on Leon's age, in the future you might have to start helping him shed. In the wild as lobsters shed it becomes harder, and harder, and harder to do so. Eventually they come to a point where during a molt they just can't get it off and end up being pinned, not able to eat and if they aren't picked off by a predator they die of starvation. Lobsters can't die of old age, but of bad sheds.

In the "Narnia" book series, the author C.S. Lewis describes a scene in which a boy has become a dragon, because he slept on a dragon's hoard and dreamed dragon dreams. The lion (now I don't remember his name) comes to tell him he must shed his dragon skin. The boy tries again and again, but fails. Finally the lion rips the dragon skin off him and he is a boy again. Aslan. That's it. I have a new respect for that piece of writing.

Hermit crabs actually molt just like this! Changing their shells is a different thing entirely, they will shed their exoskeleton after burrowing for safety and may vanish for weeks to recover. Most hermit crabs will postpone molting in captivity, so it's very likely you would never see it happen especially if you had a setup like many hermit crab owners do. A note for current-day hermit crab owners: It's very important that they molt, as if they postpone for long enough the chemical that inhibits molting will become fatally toxic. Most people do not know this, so it's not an attempt at guilt-slinging! Hermit crabs are a very misunderstood pet, and I hope their owners want to treat them right.

I'm so happy for Leon, he has a new lease on life and he's thriving under your thoughtful care! When I watched the first video of Leon molting, it felt to me like he was being reborn, shedding the scars left by the bands on his claws, and emerging with new vibrancy and beauty that better matched his future. Seeing his struggle in real time brought those feelings back even stronger. He must have been exhausted after such an arduous escape! Thank you so much for sharing Leon's journey with us, people around the world adore him and are enjoying learning about a creature we rarely see outside of restaurants and grocery stores. I don't think I could enjoy lobster again, it would be like dining on a friend! 🦞

Spiders do the same: The so-called true spiders molt sitting with the back facing the ground. Tarantulas make a silken bed, where they lie down on their back and push their old skin off. Very fascinating to watch. I have filmed the molting process twice. Afterwards, they need a long sleep, where they harden up. After that, you can enjoy their new, vibrant clothes and bigger size.🙆‍♂️🎉✨️

Watching Leon feeding, dealing with the killifish, taking out his dirty dishes, etc. But the molting process is so incredible to watch. We've often passed those tanks of fresh lobster to take home and cook and have wanted to do what you've done, Brady. Leon is the luckiest lobster to be cared for so well by you instead of being eaten. Thank you for allowing him to live 🦞 💖 Much love from us both, Samm & J, on the Somerset coast, England 🇬🇧

You're still the guy who saved - although you yourself were reluctant about it - a lobster from certain death and gave it a home, a bigger home (hence it's not the ocean it came from, but it sure is better off than it would've been food) and yourself an incredibly cool new pet. I love the vids, not only the ones about Leon. Thanks for the great, relaxing time. Huge love from Belgium!

I don’t think it hurts him, or any other crustacean for that matter. You don’t feel your skin dying and flaking off and regrowing every second of the day; it comes off when its ready. The same applies to reptilian scales and the exoskeleton of arthropods, as far as I’m aware, but I’m not a zoologist I’m a stranger on the internet, so don’t quote me on that 💦

Fun fact! Lobsters can live for wayyy longer, but they only die. Because they cant molt anymore cuz the skin is to small for them to molt it away. And lobsters never stop growing! So it is technically possible for a lobster to become huge and giant if somehow able to keep on molting.

I have to say, as someone who always feels bad for lobsters in the supermarket and always wish I could rescue them, I was captivated by this whole process. Leon definitely won the lottery with you my friend. He is spoiled and looking awesome! I used to have hermit crabs as a kid and they molt their exoskeleton as well, the first time it happened overnight and I totally missed it. I woke up and it looked like I had two crabs, one without a shell. Thankfully I knew it would happen sooner or later so I wasn’t shocked. The process looked brutal for Leon (him falling to his side was unpleasant to see) but as well as he’s being cared for, there was no doubt that he would flourish afterward.
