Best stage performance I've seen my generation produce in any genre. Until Mona started Leo was just doing his thing freely. The conductor didn't even know quite what he was in for. Leo told him when I'm done to start the song I'll look a you and nod. And then he rocked it. The Pokemon song with grace Kelly is another good performance

@@AnonMedic Jules Buckley and The Heritage Orchestra is difficult to shock or surprise. They have done their share of the odd and bizarre in amazing settings...and to excited and informed audiences. If you watch other THO performances, Jules loves to admire a world class talent being let loose for all to enjoy.

To think that he played in a subway station and is on stage of the BBC Proms. Shows you how talented and skilled he is and that he’s getting recognized for it is incredible.

As a sax player myself who did marching band for 7 years (high school and collegiate level). I'd say likely its the thickness of the reed and the type of mouth piece he's using. Towards my last years playing, I used a glass mouth piece because its more stable as well as thicker reeds bringing stability. The airflow comes from circle breathing if he wanted to. And also probably experience. Marching and sax playing isnt that hard even when you're marching and playing fast but it winds you so that airflow is important. He's not moving around nearly as much i have in some of my marching shows tbh. He's using a glass mouthpiece actually. On close ups you can see right through it. So thats definitely the biggest help here actually if you ask me. Thats why i invested in mine at the started college. Its significantly harder to use at first but the sound quality is amazing

My dad played the saxophone for over 80 years, sometimes with his own band and sometimes playing with others until the age of 90. He passed away in January, but this is the first time since that day, I've thought, "If only Dad could hear and watch this..." I would watch his face the whole time if he could see this because his enjoyment would be total.

I have seen shots of Leo's back and it looks like he has a "secret" strap that runs from the neck strap down his back to his belt and is attached there. This would take a lot of the weight off, but you are right, being able to move like that with the weight of the instrument is amazing. I'm so excited I'm going to be able to meet him on this year's Dave Koz Cruise in May.

I think the things that he only needed to memorize are sections A and B motiff and song structure.. the rest is improv.

The Leo equation is simple. Mad talent combined with excellent physical strength and rhythm. His busking days will always show through in his ability to engage and perform at the same time. It doesn't matter what genre of music you like, if you hear Leo and a set of drums you stop and listen.

I'm a Japanese university student studying English, so I apologize for my poor writing with typos. I played the baritone saxophone in junior high and high school and in the brass band. The baritone saxophone is a heavy and difficult instrument. Among Japanese people in Asia, where there are many petite body types, I am particularly petite, with a height of 147 cm. I still can't forget the days when I shed tears during the tough practice. Because I wanted to play the baritone saxophone and look cool. At that time, I was concentrating on my study baritone saxophone practice, had few friends, and didn't have a boyfriend. However, I thought that the baritone saxophone was my one and only boyfriend, and I was very supportive of him. I'm currently in my fourth year of university, but my job hunting wasn't going well, and I was depressed, worried, and wanted to die. I've been studying and playing the baritone saxophone since I was a child, but I feel pathetic. However, listening to this performance made me proud that I had played the baritone saxophone and made me feel positive about my love for jazz.

Just always remember that music is supposed to be fun, sure it is frustrating to learn how to play and to fail, but as long as you keep trying and keep enjoying the music you will improve. Also maybe start weightlifting to hold up that heavy baritone sax ;).

Once again I am back to this video. Yes Leo is insanely good here, but so are the lead trompetist and the rest of the orchestra. The rhythm here is so completely flawless, that it gives me an adrenaline kick every time I hear this.

I’ve watched this soo many times and all I gotta say is that it’s incredible how he can not only keep an audience engaged but get them hyped with just his sax and a drummer. It’s insane and he’s an absolute monster of a player. All the props to Leo

I have watched this a thousand times, and I still get literal chills when the bass starts to walk. Absolutely stunning.

Not my type of music but his skills on the saxophone are incredible. His range is phenomenal. I have seen his videos at the subway and just shows his talent as he can play with a full orchestra or just seven friends at a subway station.

I was at that concert. And till this day it is still my fav song/concert ever.

I love this dude. When I lived in NYC I would see him in the Subway and I always gave him some money. He deserves his time in the spotlight!!

How could this guy ever be anything else than a super sax player? How sad his life would have been (and how much talent squandered) if he had chosen for a safe, boring office job? He lives & breathes the music, the vibe, and becomes one with his saxophone when he plays. It's a pleasure for the eyes, ears and soul to see him perform even on YT, to experience it LIVE , must be a a natural high!🤗👍

Have you non players, ever felt the weight of a baritone sax, without even trying to play it? Mine is made of bronze, heavier than brass. Simply walking in a jazz parade and playing takes a lot of effort, never mind Leo's stunning playing and acrobatics! I got out of breath just watching him and I was sitting down. Amazing.

@@jareid82 just look up Metropole orkest and you'll see they have worked with all kinds of musicians including dance and electronics. So they have a great experience with almost any music we can imagine. Jules Buckley (conducting in this video) worked with Ibeyi and Tori Amos, Hans Ek (another conductor of this orchestra) conducted their concert with SOHN. So... they are basically omniverse

this is phenomenal. the energy is INSANE and the music spans every vibe and feeling its just out of this world. What a magnificent group of artists

This performance set a New Record for Bari Sax! And I bet it’ll stand the test of time. Epic in almost every way

I loved how the orchestra just watched as Leo did his lil dance with the lung capacity of several elephants. The Trumpet guy had such a crisp and clean sound props to both of them

Every time I watch this damn video I still can’t believe how epic this arrangement is. I thought when I listened to the original Moanin by Mingus that it couldn’t get any better than that recording, but I was very wrong. This is incredible

Honestly, you can see how much most of them are simply enjoying what he does. Orchestral music doesn't lend itself well to showmanship, so it's kinda refreshing to see someone who can just straight up rock out even in that sort of situation.

There aren't many situations where wearing a bright pink suit, matching cravat, with brighter hair and zebra patterned shoes would be appropriate at the Royal Albert Hall. This is definitely one of them

highest note isn't a difficult thing to do, I got a bari from my band for 2 days and I can hit an g6 without to much difficulty. In my opinion his growls are way more impressive.

@@gasshu9095 he's actually biting the reed and squeaking. It's controlled. You'll notice he's not even using the keys necessary to hit such high notes. Takes a lot of practice and control.

its been 4 years and this still bangs as hard as when it came out

I had seen some of his subways videos and was amazed but this is mind blowing as to what an incredible saxophone player he is. And not a bad showman either

Absolutely insane skill, tone, and ability. Preposterous breathing and air control. I’ve truly never seen anything like this on a sax in my life. Point me to another saxophonist like this. Bet you can’t. I’ve never heard of this guy but watched this 4 times in a row. More blown away each and every time.

Fifth Octave coltrane is good on his particular kind of music (mostly jazz) i love him but honestly I don’t think he mastered sax like leo do

Leo Pellegrino is my favourite saxophonist of all time, I have never ever heard any one play like him, I have never seen anyone dance like him playing at the same time, his awesome cool fashion style and never heard someone do saxophone techno jazz. He honestly make professionals look inexperienced. He deserves all the success from his hard work. I also saw a video recently called Leo P Donuts he does a duo with youtuber 2SAXY they compliment one another quite well.

the fact that they went right into an amazing chart of moanin right after the intro solo. this is absolutely incredible all around

I love how the director admires how Leo plays, specially when he arrives on stage.

5:07 onwards. Damn that rhythm section is so on point during that trumpet solo & then Leo’s too! The syncopation of the piano comping & accompaniment with the drums & base: AWESOME. Love that little piano riff just before the trumpet solo starts too, sets the tone perfectly!

When I hear him play I think of Stevie Ray Vaughn. Channels his soul through his instrument. He is a giant talent.

this is such a legendary performance I believe every musician must see this, it’s a masterclass in entrepreneurship and honestly getting the most out of making the music you love

This concert is still one of the greatest. I listen to this on repeat working out. end up running 20 miles instead of 2
