Lenovo ThinkPad X230T mSATA SSD + second HDD + Win 10 install (how to)

Ғылым және технология

My refurbished Laptops and PC's for sale:
eBay: www.ebay.ca/usr/haiste_comput...
Kijiji: www.kijiji.ca/o-profile/51588...
I install an mSATA Solid State Drive and a storage Hard Drive into a Lenovo ThinkPad X230T (tablet edition)
Laptop Specs:
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3320M CPU @ 2.6GHz
Intel(R) HD 4000 Graphics
128GB SK Hynix mSATA Solid State Drive
160GB Toshiba Hard Drive
4GB DDR3 RAM
I really like this edition of the X230. Upgrades like the touchscreen and USB 3.0 paired with the CPU allow for a nice experience.

    The backlit keyboard is not working? Are you certain that the keyboard is the correct model? There are keyboards that do not light up. You can definitely install Windows and run it on an mSATA SSD, I do it all the time. I believe the speeds are SATA II, but I generally install 128GB drives with the main job to run to the operating system and some software apps. Second SSD's set up as storage is a good option.

    Glad you liked the video :) Do you mean install 3 mSATA drives? You could purchase an mSATA to SATA converter and then install that where the HDD can go. I've only installed mSATA SSD's with a converter on desktops, but I imagine you could find one that would fit in the HDD enclosure. That covers 2 mSATA drives. For the third, you could try a USB adapter. There isn't an optical drive, so you can't install a HDD caddie there. I'm sure there is a docking bay with an optical drive option, you could do that if you happen to find one. That would be quite the setup!

    @@HaisteComputerRepair Yes, I mean; 1st mSata SSD is exactly like you put it (on the WWAN slot) and the 2nd and the 3rd, using a SATA3 to "dual mSATA converter" (to accomodate the two mSATA SSDs) to replace the main/original HDD (or SSD)

    Great video! Can that SSD you used go in either of the 2 locations, or would it have to be a different type/size of SSD for the port where you installed the hdd?

  • @HaisteComputerRepair

    @HaisteComputerRepair

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you :) The mSATA SSD can only go in the location under the motherboard. A standard 2.5" SSD can go in the HDD bay. They are two different styles of connections to the system board. I suppose that there might be some kind of adapter for mSATA to SATA that could fit in that HDD bay, but unless you have two mSATA SSD's burning a hole in your pocket, I would stick to a 2.5" SATA drive for the HDD bay. Does that make sense?

  • @zacr8588

    @@HaisteComputerRepair Yes definitely, I was just seeing if I could swap the one SSD from my HDD bay, but it's fine! It's only 128GB. If I want to use that for my apps and a larger hard drive for my files, what would you recommend I do? Just getting a larger SSD for the one under the motherboard. Or getting a large HDD drive and a smaller SSD for the one under the motherboard?

  • @HaisteComputerRepair

    @HaisteComputerRepair

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@zacr8588 Well, what I would normally do is install Windows onto the mSATA SSD and set up the HDD for storage + running software and games. The SSD would outperform the HDD, of course, so feel free to install anything you like to it so long as you have the storage capacity to do so. Installing two SSD's would be the best for performance, if you can budget that.

  • @HaisteComputerRepair

    For sure. You can have Linux on one drive and Windows on the other. So, when you power on, press the ThinkVantage button and then F12 from the menu to choose boot options. I believe there may be software (or different BIOS from different board manufacturers) that will automatically prompt you after powering on, but I haven't ever explored that route. So, if you have one OS that you prefer, select that as priority boot in BIOS and the other disk as the second option. Let me know how it goes.
