Pro tip for those who are new to Lenovo laptops! If your laptop is plugged in most of the time, Lenovo has a function in their Vantage software called "Conservation Mode", which helps limit the battery charge to 60% when you're plugged in. This helps preserve your battery's health. My Legion 5 is now 3 months old and only has gone through 15 charge cycles!

Just a note to people upgrading brand new Legion 5s. the newer ones (like the one I purchased) have different motherboards installed meaning a 2.5inch SSD or HDD can't be installed into it, an M.2 SSD can still be installed in the same way. Another thing to watch out for is the RAM, the motherboard in the newer ones isn't XMP based meaning XMP ram (what's commonly sold) won't work at full speed.

I like that Lenovo included the four SSD screws even though they are very much standard screws that are likely to come with the SSD as well. And their decision to specially design a piece of plastic to hold them is so smart as well. They could have just gone lazy and put them in the plastic bag with other accessories, which the user is unlikely to remember or even notice. It's details like this that make me approve of a product that much more.

You might be able to use the M.2 drive as well as a 2.5 inch SATA SSD at the same time if you take apart the 2.5 inch SSD by removing it's plastic housing. Inside that there's a high chance you'll have a small circuit board which is the SSD. After that you might even be able to have all three options, larger battery, SATA SSD, M.2 SSD(As long as that M.2 isn't the same port though, shouldn't be if the M.2 is NVME).

Your Lenovo videos are always first rate. That said, I am a lifelong ThinkPad user and whenever I see what Lenovo has been selling since the overpriced but cheaply made T440 I wonder if we shall ever see true quality again. Obviously key components have become more powerful but the loss of so many ports, dumping of optical and penny pinching on SD bandwidth (where SDs are even fitted) has shown Lenovo's current management to be trading on a once great and distinctive pedigree. Actual machines are in fact little better than things costing 50% less. Dell also had a bad quality patch but seemed to learn from crashing sales. HP are mostly bad with the occasional machines being at Elitebook and Probook standards of a dozen years ago. Many of us in the area of education IT are going back to Clevo base models honed and finished by specialist companies and having so-called 'gaming computers' modified to serve our middle term needs. We also note that some ASUS models a few years old are more accessible and upgradeable than the Big Three. We think it possible that Framework and firms like it could herald the future because many models yet too narrow a range is the reality of the big three non-Mac companies. Their greed and laziness could sink them rather quickly.

As an owner of this machine, I feel like some important topics were missed here. Upgrading RAM isn't just about capacity. Sometimes it is about performance. What will this machine do with tighter timings? What are the actual limits it will accept? Is there a 3400MT/s or faster kit available that will work? Can the cooling be upgraded? I know in the past, Lenovo has different cooling for different SKUs. I also own the 1660Ti version. Is the 2060 cooling module better? If so, would it be possible to upgrade to the 2060 cooling kit to improve temps? If you can, does that improve performance in any meaningful way?

@@SeudXe I was asking as the "upgrade guide" was missing the upgrades that appeared to be worth doing. It is common practice to have different cooling based upon the build. First I ran into that, was with the W520. Upgrading from a dual core to a quad core included a cooling upgrade. Upgrading from the low end to high end GPU involved a cooling upgrade. And you could purchase, and install that upgraded cooler yourself if you wanted to lower temps on parts that weren't maxed out for the platform. I assumed the same would apply to the Legion 5 - given the upgraded parts available. However, that topic was never approached by the author.

Hello Jarrod, Thank you for the insightful video. I was able to buy the Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 7 Nvidia RTX 2060 80W version based on your videos. The only compromise was the ssd was 500GB which is certainly not enough for heavy users. I actually purchased the same m.2 you recommended for the second slot on the motherboard. I just wanted to let people know that with the 80w version as it doesn't come with the HDD bay with spare screws, there is one actually placed where the second m.2 slot is located. Since the M.2 card purchase doesn't come with a spare screw i thought it would be best to let people know. My laptop model is the 15ARH05H.
