I'm Irish, he makes a very valid point about prejudice and defends the Irish if you're actually listening to what he is saying. One of the most important intellectuals of the 20th Century

You really applaud that nasty bit of idiocy? He was a low life junkie wife abuser and this nasty rant is baseless and putrid. If he ever had a clue about anything he would know Jews never suffered like the Irish, he would know we lost a bigger percentage of our people in the British Holocaust than Jews did in the German Holocaust. He would know we suffered tremendous prejudice and persecution in the US and that Paddy Wagon came from that and it should surprise no one that we aspired to control of the system that burdened and insulted us with the Paddy Wagon slur. But being a low life piece of rat dung, he never had a clue about anything.

Should never have listened to that brain dead piece of junkie filth to begin with. There is a video here about the Great Imposter Lenny Bruce. You should watch it and learn something real. Child molesters in Ireland invite their local IRA to drop by with a cordless drill to ventilate their knee caps. This filth is like most all his trash, Grade A Ignorant BS.

A brilliant orator can communicate better than requiring you to listen to it 2-3 times to understand the oration and what was being said. I think by definition they might be a terrible orator? Let me know what you think if you're alive 13 years after writing your original comment.

Perfect example of pure BS. The country was shocked when Kennedy became President and if you think China Joe is Irish, you are wrong. The date of his immigrant ancestor, a Brit, entered Ireland is recorded history as is his actual " Irish" heritage which is one Irish Great Grandmother. That's it, the rest are descendants of the Norman Invaders. Let's see some specifics. China Joe is eliminated. Is Blinken Irish? How about the majority of the Biden administration? Nope, ironically enough, they are Jews. Its a rant as brain dead as it is vile and that describes the Great Imposter to a T. Seldom has any celebrity been so purely fake or fooled as many gullible people.

They broke Lenny Bruce down so as people wouldn't be able to understand his message. They didn't like how he thought; he was a free thinker, but they pressed him into a world of limitations where he was certain to wither. They took Lenny Bruce's work away from him. They stripped his talent because they did not understand him. He is a martyr. Ignoring him is ignorant.

There are people who devote their lives to curing illnesses and they are heroes. Lenny Bruce set about curing the illnesses of the fucked up society around him. And for that, whether you will admit it or not, he is a hero. To think some people like Lenny make a life and a career entertaining others while completely reshaping comedy and fighting for free speech. Wouldn't it be a perfect world if we all sat around leaving negative comments on videos we don't even like. You're the hero here.

There was a time when intelligent monologues were considered worthwhile. He wasn't up there just to be funny-- he pointed out truths, and hypocrisy and ironies in the society. He put himself on the line to defend free speech, and fight against the repressive climate of the 1950s. He went to JAIL for it. Give him some credit.

To those who don't get this short bit of Lenny Bruce. Bruce didn't work like most modern comedians who do short form. Or even the comedians like Bob Hope of his day who did short form. Bruce is a long form comic and a thinker - too long form for one short clip on youtube. It takes a while to click in to his rhythm , and at the begin, you're just thinking so hard about what he's saying. Once he's got you, about fifteen minutes in or twenty minutes in, Bang! A pop goes off in your head .

Lenny's legacy is freedom of speech. Was he fall down laughing funny? No.Was he a brilliant man in his own right? Yes. Lenny's numerous arrests for obscenity opened the doors for every comic from Carlin, Pryor, to Chris Rock. The freedom they have to say pretty much what they want on T.V. today? Lenny, and the first amendment.Lenny's true downfall was heroin, and that's what killed him. Or as he liked to say, "I don't have a drug problem, i have a police problem."....."Man"

he did used to take drugs but they only really became a problem in the last few years of his life when the persecution by the police & courts broke him they took his licence to work they crippled him with debt. One of the prosecutors from the New York trial, Assistant DA Cuccia, commented on his sense of guilt after Lenny Bruce's death, saying, "We drove him into poverty and bankruptcy and then murdered him. I watched him gradually fall apart. It's the only thing I did in Hogan's office that I'm really ashamed of. We all knew what we were doing. We used the law to kill him."

I find Lenny Bruce to be more interesting than funny. I agree with him when he said he was not a comedian, just Lenny. He has a story to tell and he tells it in a rather engaging manner, but he's not laugh out loud funny to me. I like how he curses though, unlike todays comedians like that wretch Bill Maher who try to be like Lenny but intentionally offend, Lenny curses so passively that I barely notice it. He's like some guy in a bar just casually chatting it up after a couple drinks.

George Carlin didn't seem to place much personal importance on nationality (his or others), judging by some of his statements. He was disdainful of people pointedly taking pride in being of a certain nationality (whatever it may be) because your nationality is something you happen to be born with. In Carlin's estimation, it made more sense to be proud of an actual *skill* you've acquired instead. We don't choose our nationality, but we can choose to develop a skill...

I genuinely believe in equality, but still... the idea of not being Irish is heartbreaking. If other folks want to make a joke or two at our expense, I feel like letting them do it is the least we can do.

Im Irish and the only thing I know for certain about this clip is from hearing lenny he was on smack and half dozing off. Id say its a fair bet this guy was arrested by irish cops a fair amount of times. I read his book how to talk dirty and influence people, it reads like one long monologe by a guy whos about to pass out on heroin but manages to stay awake. dont do drugs kids.

I only heard of Lenny Bruce today through means of a biography I'm reading so I don't really know the whole story. I think Lenny picked the 12 impressionable people on the jury rather than the judge when he performed because he didn't intend to convince everyone, just relate to those willing to be open to what he had to say. Fair enough, you don't have to like it, comedey is apparently all about whats taboo and not p.c. I'm Irish and I'm not offended...

Lenny never insulted any race or religion. Uninformed people thought he did, and that just proved their ignorance. What Lenny did in all his bits was to show the stupidity and racism in the world. Because most people didn't understand him, he was constantly defending his work in court, which led to his depression, drug addictions and ultimately, his death.

First off, this is from a different time, practically ancient, culturally speaking -- decades before political correctness. Nobody was doing what he was doing -- free-associating about the deepest recesses of his (and our collective) psyche. Nothing was sacred, which is normal today, but not then. Whether you agree or disagree with his words, he broke down barriers. And he paid the price.

@OceanderTethyseus The question was did you laugh? Comedians are funny. Being radical and "dangerous" observers of the scene is no part of their job description. I am all for breaking new ground but you must never forget the first rule of comedy. There are a million new ways to baffle an audience more than amuse and entertain them. Being an icon and a self-styled martyr is just one of them.

No wonder there are no decent and meaningful comedians today, people are too thick to understand them let alone have a laugh with them...

Wow. I never heard such Irish stereotypes in my life, but I don't doubt that people thought that way when Lenny spoke on it. I _hope_ we're a better people now, but I _fear_ we're the same but don't have a Lenny Bruce to show us our failings.

I've been trying to get it with Lenny Bruce for years. I watch these clips looking for some bits of wisdom or humor and all of it just seems like a rambling drug addict. Sometimes it seems like he is going to make some deep point but nothing ever comes of it; it just trails off into nothing. I always think maybe the clip was cut off before he got to the good stuff so I find other clips but there is nothing else there. Defenders tell me I just don't get it and it is over my head but when I ask for some sort of explanation, all I ever get is "HE INFLUENCED CARLIN!!" but an artist's work needs to stand on its own and not just vicariously through some real genius. Also, I don't see any clips of Carlin ramblings and never making any good points. And then people tell me that it is just an issue of context or being issues of the time in which he was performing. But when I listen to the clips of him on stage, the audience never seems to laugh at much. Sometimes he swears or says stuff like "fag" or "spic" and he gets a brief "WOOHOO!" from the audience but that is about it. And then they tell me "Well, he was the first to do political and religious commentary and this and that..." as if Lenny Bruce predated Jonathan Swift or any number of satirists who were doing that stuff for centuries before him. Then people will defend him as some champion of free speech but all that court stuff was just basically because he swore on stage; it wasn't because he got too close to some truth that The Man couldn't let us know.

Get his recordings on Fantasy if you want to know how funny Lenny could be - and the recording, "Lenny Bruce is Out Again" - many bits in front of a live audience which is howling with laughter.
