Lennox Lewis Vs Ray Mercer 1996

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use:
the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive);
the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity);
the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and
the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.[4]
The Act was later amended to extend the fair use defense to unpublished works.

    I remember watching this live in thinking Ray Mercer had won the fight. It was a great fight, but now that I re-watch it it looks like Lennox won 6 or 7 rounds. Lewis was a great fighter when he respected, truly respected his opponent, and didn't allow his arrogance to just assume that his 'greater talent and ability' would automatically make him superior, and therefore, the victor... Honestly think Bowe missed a trick not fighting Lewis... Yeah, Lewis beat Bowe in the Olympics, which of course is amateur boxing, and doesn't mean shit when it comes to Professional Boxing... Must remember that Gonzalez battered both Lewis and Bowe in the amateur game, and teased Bowe about when he beat him rather convincingly...and look what happened when Gonzalez faced Riddick Bowe as a professional...Bowe gave Gonzalez a boxing lesson, and a beating, and made him look like he was still an amateur... In all professional sport, and most definitely in boxing, one's talent, or natural ability, and skill, they can only take the boxer so far. If the boxer doesn't have 'discipline' and 'commitment' then they may as well not have the fucking talent because they'll get found out by those that treat boxing, the training, and their bodies with respect...and that was Bowe's trouble, his discipline. He'd spend 75% of the time between fights sitting in fucking Mcdonalds...such a waste. When he was disciplined, like preparing for the first and the third Holyfield fights, he was great. Bowe had so much natural ability, but was a lazy fucker. Same goes for Tommy Morrison, but instead of gorging on burgers, he gorged on booze and cocaine. People talk about Morrison's susceptible chin, but when he was passionate and focused, his chin was fine. He got up against Ruddock to win, and losing to Mercer, well, Mercer was hardly a weak puncher, and how can people say his chin was weak after going 12 rounds with George Foreman, and Tommy lasted as long with Lewis as Vitaly Klitscho did, 6 rounds, and wasn't as battered, and Lewis was younger and fitter, and 6 rounds was longer than Golota, Ruddock, Rahman, McCall, Shannon Briggs, Tyrell Biggs, and Francis Botha lasted...yet he had a 'dodgy chin'...12 rounds with Foreman?....What I'm saying is, when a fighter is disciplined and passionate about the fight, even their chin acts differently and can withstand more, no doubt cause of will power...honestly believe if Bowe had trained hard, he could've beaten Lewis.... Miss these heavyweight days

    Mercer's success in this fight is part the fact that he is a tank and can walk through the missiles of Lewis. Lewis being such a big puncher and Mercer walking through every punch Lewis threw, shows how special Evander Holyfield is. Holyfield, not considered anywhere near the puncher as Morrison or Lewis, was able through sheer intensity able to drop Mercer by forcing Mercer to take a knee.

    Holyfield was an animal in the ring, no doubt about it. Lewis was too. I think Mercer gave Lewis the toughest 12 rounds of his life. The difference in this fight was razor thin. Just imagine how dominant guys like Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson, Mercer, Moorer, Morrison, and so many others could have been if they weren't all beating up on each other? That's not even considering what Holmes, and Foreman did in the 40's. I don't know when we will ever see another era of heavyweights like that again.

  • @johncalbeck935

    I am surprised that Lewis was given this fight. I had it 96-94 Mercer, and that is giving Lennox round four, which I actually thought was extremely close. Lewis was relatively passive much of the time and Mercer was consistently the aggressor . He landed many more jabs and numerous hard right hands and combinations throughout the fight , winning rounds 1,2,3,5,6 and 9. I thought one of Lewis' uppercuts might do him in, but he managed to brush them off and landed a few of his own. The older fighter fought through exhaustion to take the 9th round and win the fight.

    @@taekwondotime I agree that the fight was close, but I still think that Ray should have won. Busy doesn't win fights; winning rounds does. I thought Mercer won more rounds (the ones I listed). But I do respect your opinion. There is a reason this bout has remained controversial for all these years. By the way, Mercer landed a higher percentage of his punches (nearly 10%), Lewis landed a few more punches overall, but only a very few.

    @@johncalbeck935 Somewhere on KZread I scored this fight round by round (hard to keep track of which video I watched since so many versions exist). In any event, Mercer lost rounds because he went long periods of time without doing anything. One flurry here or there doesn't offset being picked apart by Lewis's jab for 2:45 of every round. This became more noticeable in the later rounds as Mercer's early lead evaporated and Lewis took control of the fight. Kudos to Mercer for doing what nobody else had the courage to do: he went right after Lewis. That being said, he ate a lot of punches (that would have dropped most other heavyweights) and he faded down the stretch. The best you can say is that the fight was a draw, but Lewis winning was the right decision. You can't go by the crowd reaction because it's a pro-Mercer crowd.

    Not the borderline-robbery that some (and only some) sources built me up for. In fact, the punch count - which still came out in Lewis's favor - is one of the things reining me in on that, saying Lewis only landed 1 or 2 more punches in rounds I thought he mostly controlled. (Either Mercer was getting credit for a lot of glancing blows or he was blocking Lennox more than it might have appeared.) So "only" a close match, between two champs fighting one of the best heavyweight fights of the 90s.

    Old Ray Mercer was a tough customer. Deceptively athletic and fast-handed. He should have roughed Lewis up more in the clinches. Rapid body shots, elbows, stiff arms, whatever. He wanted a slugfest; getting Lewis riled up and trading shots with Mercer would have benefited Ray. And he definitely should have hit Lewis low in return, in the 6th.

    Lennox Lewis won. Lewis fought 3 minutes of every round. Mercer fought in flurries once or twice a round. You can't win a fight by flurrying, not unless you're Ray Leonard. Lewis won.

  • @bloodfluke7530

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I agree, not unless you're Ray Leonard, and you're flurrying against a fighter (Hagler) that you've ducked and avoided for FOUR years...Leonard gets away with murder...Duran fought Hagler in 1983, didn't hesitate, moved up to middleweight to fight Hagler at his natural / comfortable weight, so comfortable that Hagler never fought at any other weight...so Duran steps up to middleweight, goes 15 rounds with arguably the greatest middleweight ever, and goes these 15 rounds four years before Sugar Ray Leonard had the balls to fight Hagler...Leonard finally agreed to fight Hagler in 1987...1987!!!!... and people have the temerity to call Duran 'a quitter' for his behaviour in his second fight with Leonard... I repeat, their second fight, the fight where Leonard has admitted he made sure the date for their second fight was close enough for Duran to make the weight, therefore, Duran would get the payday he desperately needed, but made sure Duran wasn't ring-sharp, because he didn't have much time...Leonard made sure Duran was too exhausted from slimming down etc...I respect Leonard for admitting this...and admitting that he had to make sure he had an advantage over Duran because look what happened when they were both 100% fit in their first fight...Leonard lost, Duran beat him... Ray Leonard was very crafty... out of the fab four he's seen as the best...never heard such bollocks. He bottled Hagler for four years, fighting Hagler in 1987...remember Hagler was calling out Leonard in 1983/4, but Leonard made his excuses and waited til he knew he could win, and therefore not have his ego battered like it got battered when he lost to Duran...and he's admitted that the second Hearns fight, the draw, he's admitted that Tommy won that fight...look at Leonard's reaction at the end of the fight, he knows he's lost, but the media-friendly, enormously lucrative Sugar Ray was given a draw...very convenient...sets up another Leonard / Hearns, crowd-pulling, lucrative fight...So really Leonard only beat Hearns when Hearns was fit...His wins against Hagler and Duran were both against opponents that were not in their prime (Hagler), or not fit (Duran)....apologies for the moan, fella, just any mention of Ray Leonard's greatness, it bugs me...he ducked Hagler cause he knew he'd get a beating... it's easy to throw attractive flurries against a tiring fighter that's lost his will and spark, a fighter you should've faced FOUR years before...Look at the difference in Manny Pacquiao, in 2 years...Mayweather waited as long as possible and it worked...still think he actually would've beaten Pacquiao anyway, but it wouldn't have been as easy...cheers
