I loved Bud Collins. When you heard his voice, you knew it was a special tournament. His knowledge of the history of the game of tennis was unparalleled, and I truly admired that, because there never seemed to be a commentator that cared about ANY of the great pioneers of the game. For every other color guy, its like the game didnt exist before Rod Laver and the Aussie revolution. Not Bud. Tennis on TV is lesser without him, and for me, watching Wimbledon has never been the same since he and Dick Enberg left the booth. God bless the both of them.

It's amazing to watch this match play out: McEnroe was in total control through the first two sets, but you can see as the 3rd set begins, that McEnroe starts having...issues. He begins to be distracted and concerned with everything around him - the crowd, the camera crews and photographers, the ball boys. Yes Lendl started raising his game up, but you had to expect that to happen sooner than later. Lendl was a great clay court player - clay and hardcourt was about equal, but indoor carpet surfaces was Ivan's best surface. But McEnroe was in so total control of the match, that he was in great position to scratch his way through the rest of the match, and be the French Open Champion. But he let his focus totally dissolve into where he seemed like it was HE who lost those first two sets, and not Lendl......

A victory in this match would have gone down as one of McEnroe's greatest achievements. Few preeminent American players of the last half century have been able to conquer the French Open. The title also would have kept him perfect for the year and judging by his dominance at Wimbledon and the US Open, McEnroe in '84 could have been the best season of all-time by any player.

I feel so so bad for Mcenroe, he was actually playing really well here and is so close. See him choke in the 5th set is so sad. In my book he deserved to win, it takes extreme skill to beat Lendl on this slow surface as a "net player". He did it so well here but in the end Lendl wore him out. A fantastic match!

@@fundhund62 Depends what one's definition of 'choke' is. Normally it is associated with an inability to control one's nerves or missing easy shots at critical points in a match(Jana novotnas capitulation in the 1993 Wimbledon final, or lendls double fault in the 1983 us open final, come to mind). Mcenroe in 84 French final, didnt miss any obvious easy shots, or double fault at key points. He did however fail, particularly in the last 2 sets to get enough first serves in, thus losing, one of his most potent weapons. Being involved in baseline rallies, was only to lendl's advantage, especially on red clay, as this played to the Czech's strength, and his greater fitness. I have heard the quote where Mac, says he 'choked', l just think he is being a little harsh on himself. Whatever, the 1984 French final is a great match.

  • @fundhund62

    @fundhund62

@@jasonbrooks6562 He actually DID miss a couple of easy shots at crucial moments. Most notably in the 5th game of the third set (I'm sure he had nightmares over that easy forehand drive at 30-40 which he pushed right back into Lendl's racket), but also that forehand volley at break point in the 4th set, being just five points away from winning. And he also blew a couple of break points in the 5th, most notably that forehand drive (again!) that just clipped the top of the net. Rewatching the whole thing, you can see pretty clearly that McEnroe lost that match in his head (his first serve percentage in the last sets must have been somewhere around 30%!). Which is exactly what most people mean when saying someone "choked".

McEnroe on his peak and his greatest season ever, after this season he went downhill, incredibly how McEnroe copied Borg career, winning everything in early youth and by 25 they were burnt out, nevertheless they left an amazing history behind, I think they didnt have the will to play more, but also maybe dint find ways to refresh, innovate their playing style against the new players. As Borg, McEnroe, the guy who basically led to Borg retirement didnt win on all surfaces and had this problem on clay against Lendl, he lost against him in 1981 and this final in 1984, Borg lost 2 times against McEnroe in straight USO finals( sure he also lost on clay at USO against Connors in 1975, that was unexpected considering Connors wasnt that great on clay, Borg being the king of clay back then ). Here McEnroe lost the game in many situations, I think the most painful points were those break points in the fifth at 3-3, 15-40 he wastes the first opportunity with unforced error, second opportunity on 2nd serve of Lendl he puts a down the line passing shot forehand into the net, his game also crumbled at 4-2 in 4th set, it looked like that was the final, and he lost 3 break points at 2-2 in the third set when Lendl was almost done, but after that he sarted build confidence and played better and better till he reached brilliant level on 5th when he was just cold blooded on his serves, while McEnroe suffered a lot for points, also Lendl unleashed his backhand weapon from 3rd and McEnroe didnt have response to that, from a big big difference on winners in first three sets, then there went to just 1 in 4th (14-13), also his relentless and magic volley game started to grip after the perfection he showed in the first 2 sets, plus he started play from the line where he had no chance, he just couldnt play long rallies with Lendl and was obvious he will crumble and do unforced errors, he was totally without response after Lendl started with those great passing shots and finally on 5th Lendl also won some points on the net, but mostly what causes him to lose this game was his terrible 1st serve, it was like he was always serving with second, that thing paved the way for a comeback from Lendl, a guy who won bcuz he remained calm and that calm built confidence, he could think, while McEnroe was seeing red in front of eyes just bcuz Lendl won 2 games in a row on his serve in 3rd at2-1, McEnroe was an incredible talent, i.ve never seen anyone having such elegant volleys, his drop shots also, whoa... such joy to watch, with that rocket he was doing federeresque game. Lendl, I associate him with Djokovic, an amazing player who always remained lucid on and off the court, always kept improving and kept believing in their strengths, they kept analyse the situation, the weaknesses, the strengths and how would be tactically and tehnically possible to become better and play better, also he was a master in playing that dead game type of play, when you are writing them off, they laying still there and let you play, but they are just returning and returnig and looking for solutions, but first they have to return and dont make force errors, they keep this till they grow up in the game and start playing decentor good and the other guy starts losing focus and attack, making mistakes, here it matters how the opponent deals with this situation, he still has the first chance if he stays cool, but they cramblegenerally, or they even start playing incredible well all of sudden and there is nothing that can stop them from that moment, they start having such power and energy that they combine this game with such an amazing attacking rides and you cant do nothing, you cannot come to the net, you get passing shot, stay on baseline ? no way, you rather mistake or you will get outplayed, we could see this duel in Mc v Lendl, Mc v Wilander, Federer v Djokovic. So the most talented havent always prevailed, examples are McEnroe v Lendl, Wilander, Andre Agassi v Pete(although Sampras also had a great natural talent in this case, but Andre was right there from 17 !! and his talent kept him there till 36) and finally Roger and even Rafa v Novak.

Well, he didn't play the Australian Open that year. And sure, it was not as prestigious at the time, but still, without playing it, no calendar Grand Slam. That said, John McEnroe's year in '84 has to be one of the best ever, even without winning the French Open. If he'd won it, I'd say it was just about the best year ever. McEnroe was never going to play the Australian Open, "grand slam" or not. He played there once early in his career and hated everything about it, from what he felt was a horrible grass surface to the the scheduling which at that time was right at the end of a long year. He like Connors played twice in his career and got DQ'd in '91.

In 1980 McEnroe said, if Borg had won the @usopen he would have gone to @ausopen to stop him from winning the grand slam. What is really odd is how McEnroe suddenly gets distracted by the photographers early in the 3rd set. Its bizzare. I don't know why he would suddenly get distracted then. Presumably they had been there the whole time. Things were still going McEnroe's way in the match. But it marks the point where Lendl started having the upper hand and McEnroe started serving poorly. Ironically McEnroe never really gets upset at the umpire in this match. At least relative to his usual conduct. McEnroe says he let his emotions slip away in this match and that is what cost him this match. I can't see why that happened.

As much as I recognized the talents of John McEnroe the player, probably the best volleyer the game has ever seen, I was appalled by McEnroe the man, and stopped watching tennis in the 80's because I couldn't stand to look at him anymore. He didn't act like a man on the courts; he acted like a spoiled 7-year-old. Conversely, maybe his dad was an ogre whom he felt never loved by. Who knows? Here at the Finals, not raising the Runner-Up Prize for the fans to see, then refusing to say anything at all and dashing off to hide in the locker room, Jesus, he was so lucky to be given a shot as a TV Commentator years later. I mean, when hell-raiser Jimmy Connors has to walk all the way over to your baseline to pointedly tell you to grow up, you know you've got emotional problems.

Well we have to understand his anger and dont judge him so rigid, but of course those things dont look nicely, first he didnt clap for his opponent when he raised the trophy, then he left without saying a word, I can understand he didnt lift the trophy after what happened during the game tho, he couldnt handle losing very well, that.s clear, but also he was kinda honest in expressing his emotions. I think he might be a good presence actually, or it seems that he is capable of being a much better version when he is not on those anger situations, he just couldnt manage anger and he was going in total darkness because of that, he was controlled by this reaction of frustration, anger like a kid if you want who losses and cant get his head away from the fact that he is not the winner and the best. What I.m trying to say is that he might be a good guy when he is away from the tension. As for his tennis skills, those are undisputed.

A couple of points away from having the most dominant year in the history of tennis. I didn't watch the whole match, but if it's true that McEnroe's mental game did him in here, that would only be fitting. For years his talent was enough to overcome his emotional shakiness, but here, in the biggest match of his life (and maybe in the history of tennis) he couldn't rise above his emotional limitations? If he had pulled this out, we'd have seen at least 3-4 years more of McEnroe in his prime, and the consensus would have to be that he was one of the top 3 players all-time (with Federer and Djokovic). As it is, we're left with what-ifs.... sad

Mac was destroyed.. but he should have said a word! Lendl was never a fav to many but over the years his efforts on the court show how brilliant a player he was!

84 the last year Mac won a slam , his game seemed to taper off after this year, he should have won this match in 3 sets , he seemed to run out of gas.

The decisive moment of the match? in the third set, score 2-2, Lendl serve, min 1 h 25 .40... Mcenroe goes 0-40 with 3 break points, but fails to make them concrete: in the first he accepts the exchange from baseline instead of taking the point at the net, the second a backhand into the net, in the third he is pierced by a forehand by Ivan... if Mcenroe had conquered that break, he would have gone 3-2 and service in the third set, leading by two sets to zero; at that point Lendl would have been knocked out, and it would have been difficult for him to recover; after saving himself from such a desperate situation, the Czechoslovak begins to play for real, and to make life difficult for the American, who has to sweat the conquest of every point

That´s true. But the tennis he played was so much more skilfull than what we have to put up with today. And don't forget Borg left without a word at the US Open 1981.
