How Borg won on clay with most of his groundstrokes landing inside the service line? Different era, different racquets, and his excellent footwork.

So proud of Lendl! He took Borg, the defending champion at Roland Garros and five time champion there, to five sets. He was barely 20 years old.

@@maartijff144 Borg had a lot of success against Lendl and was still dominating him in exhibitions in 1982. Older Lendl definitely became tougher, but still lost crucial matches to Mats Wilander (a poor man's Borg) at the French in 1985 and US Open in 1988. So doubt Borg would be baffled by him.

@@SuperHammarenabsolutely. And Borg didn’t even want to play tennis in 1981. He had to be talked into playing by his coach and girlfriend. So I’d say he was well past his prime here in this match. And still won 😝

True, but Lendl wasn´t in his prime. I think it would be really exciting to see them play both in their prime. Borg maybe a little faster but Lendl more powerful groundstrokes.... we will never know!

@@maartijff144 Borg was incredibly fast and while Lendls strokes were certainly more powerful/ flat, Borg's serve was just as good, highly underrated. At Ivan's peak it would have been a huge battle but I think Borg would still have the advantage on clay and grass and Ivan on hard courts. Wilander was able to beat Lendl at the French on more than a few occasions after 1981.

No..but the raquets had a little sweetspot..so hitting more flat was more standard back then..But balloning on clay was more standard to wear the oponent out and to find an opening. It was more fun to watch back then..but the tempo was way slower:)

If the women played with wooden racquets, ropey strings, small heads, plimsolls, ditch their coaching/diet/physio teams - then a fairly top male club player could beat almost all of them with modern racquet and hitech strings and shoes. But you are clearly not a tennis player of any quality who also played back then - so you're all Dunning Kruger about it.
