Leica R Summicron 35mm f2 Review - A Beautiful and Artistic 35mm Lens | Filmed on Lumix S5/S1

#Leica #35mm #Summicron
Ciao guys, in today's video I'll talk about the Leica R Summicron 35mm F2! All the footage and picture you're seeing in the video are taken with this lens, except for the talking video (filmed with the Zeiss 25mm F2) and some clips in the fashion video at the end (some clips are taken with the Summicron 90mm F2). The ultra wide shots you're seeing are taken with the Summicron 35mm F2 + Schneider Xenar X 0,7 converter. In the videos I didn't use any diffusion filter, but in the outdoor clips I've used a fixed IRND 16 that doesn't have any color cast.
Everything has been filmed in 4K 10 bit V-Log and color graded to Rec709.
In the video I'm talking about the version 2 of the lens, the E55 with the in built lens hood. This is lens has a different rendering of the images if compared with the V1.
Let me know your experience with this lens in the comment, I'm curious to know your opinion! I have this lens only since one year.

I bought my Leica lens set about 20 years ago. I love it and will never sell. I think one lens sells for more than I paid for the entire set back then. 15, 19, 24 28, 35, 50, 90, 135 and the 180. I think I paid like 3500 for all of them.

Yup, I need a 1stAC with an umbrella, my copy has some wild lateral flares, though the longitudinal aberrations can be annoying in the wilderness. Rendering and focus roll off are seducing. Nice review.

Maybe it's time to send your copy for a CLA, your problem can be fixed. I don't have many LoCA with my copies, if stopped down to f5.6 they're CA free...maybe you also have a glass element that is not in the correct position. Thanks for watching John!

With those prices I don't think I'll ever start collecting Leica lenses. Thanks for the recommendation to find something similar though. Presently I'm in the process of looking for a few cheap vintage lenses from different makers and deciding which ones I like the most before trying to make a set.

Yes, if you can try different lenses it will be better. Keep in mind that wide angle lenses are difficult to find, so base your decision also considering this aspect! Good luck mate!

I bought my copy for 150€ (ok, in not so good cosmetic condition) in 2012. Crazy, these prices are not justified by any means. As you mentioned, the field curvature is crazy. And the Bokeh is very strange, almost a triangle at the corners. Sharpness and contrast is mediacore. I have 3 Leica R lenses, this 35mm, a 50mm 1.4 (first design) and a 135 2.8 (that is actually super affordable). None of these are my favorite lenses. They are too good to really shine as vintage lenses and too bad in comparison to modern lenses. But I keep them as they get super valuable, apparently. And sometimes they are nice. But for that money I would definitely just buy a modern lens, like a Sigma 40mm 1.4 Art. Way more versatile. I recommend, if you want to have the look and feel of old lenses without the hustle to find a good copy and spend way too much money for it, just buy something like a TTartesian. Or use modern lenses and add flaws later or via filter. Or just buy the type of lenses nobody is interested in. There are no real hidden gems anymore, but some lenses are still fantastic. My all time favorite is the Canon FD 50mm 1.4 SSC. Dreamy wide open, super sharp from 2.8 on. Olympus OM lenses are also crazy (but unfortunately many people know this). Incredibly sharp for the age, but also weird Bokeh.

You got a pretty good deal with your cron 35mm! 🙂 I think you simply had bad luck with your copy of the lenses. They are very beautiful and with an unique look...to me what you're saying sounds a bit weird. If you don't see the differences in the image quality between Sigma/Leica/TTartisans, it's fine...but suggesting those lenses instead of Leica R seems an exaggeration and you can confuse people doing so. I suggest you to make a comparison video about these lenses you mentioned or you can also post an article with some pictures in the forum www.lensrating.com/forum to help the community, if you have the time 😁

I’m really liking your videos - thank you! I am in the process of deciding between Leica Rs and Contax Zeiss, just trying them out at home these days and would really appreciate your opinion on the following topic: the Leicas have a much longer focus throw than the Contax…do you have a preference working alone with a handheld Camera? Initially the shorter Zeiss seem more convenient for manual focusing by hand.

Hey Vilmos! Thanks mate! The long focus pull is not a big problem if you use a follow focus... I think that the Leica R lenses are more versatile than the Contax Zeiss, but that's my opinion 😜 You'll have to decide. Good luck!

There are no modern lenses that can flare like the cron 35mm, except for another 2 vintage lenses that are kept as a secret :) Lens flares are difficult to manage, they can be distractive and sometimes they're a bit of a cliche'...there are no rules about it so do what you like to do, it's your style!
