Leica Q2 One Year Later - Still Worth It In 2023?

Ғылым және технология

Its been over a years since I bought the Leica Q2 - by far the most expensive camera I have ever owned and also my first full frame camera. I have used it a ton and have a lot to say about it. So heres my verdict after one year.

Great video. I agree about the quality. I have had the Leica, Leica Q2 and Leica Q2 monochrome. I sold the Leica Q2 about 18 months ago, but looking through my albums it is clear that my best photos were taken with this camera and I have now decided to re-purchase. My only disagreement is over how robust it is. All my models had chipped paint and the evf was scratched by my glasses. As a result I lost a ton of money selling them on. Other than that I simply love these cameras.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. I have a similar experience, I totally agree with the positive and negative points, very good analysis. I also had a micro 4/3, and an SLR before. The full frame and the Q2 in particular are great. However, the overpriced nature of this camera scared me. When I went out for example, or afraid of theft or breakage. This fear and the low usage pushed me to resell it (more expensive than the purchase price :-) Anyway, thanks for this channel that I love. I may take an x100v or Leica M9 (I was able to test an M a few months ago and the smoothness and colors were incredible, I prefer these lenses than the one on the q2 which I find almost too sharp) to replace it, in the meantime I shoot with the iPhone 14 Pro and the raw are excellent. Marc

For me, the Leica Q2 has been a great camera to learn photography with. Leica's "wesentliche" approach to user interface design helped me understand the relationship between each element in the exposure triangle (e.g., aperture, ISO, and shutterspeed). Depth of field markings on the lens helped me understand how the plan of focus works at various aperture settings. Lastly, the poor sensor performance at high ISOs taught me a lot about how to optimize your camera settings to get a good shot in sub-optimal conditions. Then the 28mm lens taught me how lens distortion works when shooting subjects at close range. Overall, working through these limitations will helped me make figure out what I was really missing, which helped me make a better decision on the next camera/lens combo to buy (for me that was something with a longer-lens).

Could have used a fuji xt series camera. Any really since they actually have those three settings dials. Lieca is great but old fashioned. Can’t keep up and everything is really a better value. But if you are loaded and don’t care; go nuts. A point and shoot camera which the Q2 actually is is never a good idea for learning to shoot photography. Good photography has nothing to do with the camera, its the composition if light beforehand and then you use any camera to try and take the shot you wanted and thought of. Not point, shoot and look. The work is done beforehand and then one goes out and shoot. film photographers can’t check so they must “know”. I would love a q1 or q1 but just for fun.. but it’s too expensive for me for just fun.

Tobis, thanks for your insight. I haven't followed much reviews of the Q2, always thinking it was out my reach anyways but recently I've reconsidered. In a previous video, you mentioned issues with the EVF & the back LCD rendering differences. Samuel Streetlife also did a 7 issues video - among which he pointed the LCD, EVF and final raw would always end up looking different. Since you didn't mention anything here - would you say these problems have been resolved in firmware or you got used to it? Also, has this problem been mentioned regularly so that Leica would be aware of it and possibly cure it fot it's Q3? "asking for a friend" who wants to start saving money 🙂

Lovely camera but I’ve traded mine in for the X-Pro3 with the new 18/23/33 lm f1.4 prime lenses with change to spare. I missed the ability to change lenses and honestly, the image quality from these new lenses from Fuji is so good that I don’t don’t feel like I’m missing out from what I got from the Q2 - they really are that good. Thinking of adding either the new 56mm f1.2 WR or the 50mm f1 and I think I’m fully covered for what I need.

@@wejuya Having shifted from Fuji (Xpro1, Xpro2, and XT1) from 2011 to 2017 to the to Leica M system, I can say that Fuji is far less durable camera system of the bunch (I've also had a Sony a7 and a7r3), has poor noise performance (it is a cropped sensor...). I love the images with Fuji, but if I had one Leica rather than these three Fuji cameras which I used to death, it would have been cheaper and be full frame. My wife is contemplating a Q2 after seeing my M11 since she loves the camera but loves macro and auto focus.

No issues with Fuji, I owned the X-Pro1 plus 18,35, 56 and 60mm lenses, awesome little system but as I have a bucket load of Nikon gear the Fuji stuff ended up sitting in the cupboard not seeing much action so with sadness I moved it on last year. Now as much as I love my Nikon gear I do like the idea of giving myself a retirement present and something from Leica is going to be the likely outcome. The Q2 certainly appeals as does the M10-R or M11 plus a lens or two, I love the romantic idea of throwing a Q2 into my shoulder bag or backpack and simply going off for a day ot two to take pictures, the M cameras don't appear to be as rugged based on some comments on forums and need to be treated with a bit more care if the focus calibration isn't going to be affected. I think that my Z7 with a 28mm lens could be my Q2 leaving a M camera as my present.

I have a huge Sony setup so let me know if you need any lens advice etc. I have been looking at the Leica Q2 for years now and have been back and forth. I love the 35mm FOV and 28mm just feels like having someone else's arm attached to my body. I even bought a 28mm F2 to try and see if I can like it through brute force, but the more and more I shoot that - the less I want to buy the Q2. I was also tempted to by the Q2 and shoot it in the 35mm crop mode... but then why buy something that is not what I want, especially when I can shoot with my Sony with the 35mm F1.8. I am now looking at the M cameras and their 35mm options... but I will lose autofocus, macro mode, and weather sealing (and double my pricepoint). I don't agree that you can't make 35mm wider... you can... either step back 2 steps, or take a pano. I would much prefer that to living with being too far away from a subject (28mm requires you to get uncomfortably close and gives distortion that I don't like). Also people need to stop moaning about the price of Leicas. It's just people who focus on spec sheets that look at that. This is what it costs when you want to make a higher quality product, in a country where labor costs are high, and are not mass producing, but still have all the same development costs.

I agree on the focal length, either Leica need to make a 35mm version, or release both 28 and 50mm versions. Generally, a 28/50 combo is perfect for me, but if I could only have one lens a 35 offers the best versatility

  • @domtomas1178

Yep, I would also trade in all my Canon and Fuji gear to just have the Q2, but I can’t stand the 28mm FOV. 35mm would be better, but my go to when I can only use one prime has always been a 50mm. So until Leica make a second Q with a 50mm f2 lens, I won’t be getting one.

In this context and as a future A7IV owner I wonder what your advice will be for someone who could either choose an interchangeable full frame solution vs Q2/Q3 as one and only setup. I do love the simplistic and luxurious look of the Leica and the idea of one device that does it all is certainly very appealing. On the other hand there is so much one could get for the same price...

Any camera can be your only camera for travel, you just have to accept the compromises that come with your choice of travel companion. A fixed lens compact camera can be very frustrating to take or it an be very liberating, a lot depends on you and your type of photography, zoom lenses are incredibly popular for travel but it depends on what you are going to do. I love my Z7 and 24-120, the tele end is great for isolating a subject and giving the background a bit of blur but it is a noticeable lump, the Z7 and my 28mm lens goes albut unnoticed and allows me to get in close and get more intimate shots, plus I can crop in on the 28mm shots if I need to. Where are you going and what do you plan to shoot, a Q2 on Safari may not be the best choice but on a city escape a Q2 could be just perfect.

Ich nutze die Leica M10 und die M240 neben meiner Canon- und Fuji-Ausrüstung (bin Berufsfotograf). Das Leica M-System hat keinen Autofokus, allerdings vermisse ich diesen auch nicht wirklich. You have missed out the lens cap. To me it is the most (and the only) bad point about this camera having using it for 2 years. I have been using Leica for more than 50 yeears and Q2's lens cap is my only disappointment with Leica.

You finally shooting RAW with Your Q2? It was just a jpg. camera not so long ago (hilarious). Well, nothing new here, expensive, good looking, good quality, nice lens, good image quality if You dare to shoot RAW.

I have this money but i'd never spend them like this, due to the fact that's a luxury product, it will just not look right in my hand and personality.

I have exactly the same thoughts. Beautiful camera but this camera is behind every other camera released in the past 3-2 years ago. No UsbC or Mic jack is a huge downer. I wish they make a Q2 with a 35mm or 50mm. I'm comparing the Q2 vs. Sony a7C with 24mm f2.5 vs A1 with 24mm f2.5. The findings make the Leica Q2 terrible in every sense comparing feature to feature and value. I'll be sharing a video on my channel as well.

While true in a sense, that's not really why people use leicas. It's more for the quality of the user experience, the camera just gets out of the way. Leica viewfinders however(even their evf's) are actually way better than all other cameras(even new ones) due to better optics. The Q2 evf has the same resolution as that in my Fujifilm, but looks way sharper simply because the glass they use for the magnification is of higher quality

@@CianMcsweeney I hear you. I was so curious to experience what the hype was all about that I pulled the trigger and bought it. My personal opinion is that the camera has terrible ergonomics. It’s like a camera to be seen with but not a real money maker. Kind of like a camera to show off more than a camera packed with features and pleasant ergonomics. I can see this camera being revolutionary 8 years ago. I would love to see what Leica has coming for this line in the future. I’m still keeping my mind open.

A problem with the bad? lol dude try to go on a simple portrait shoot and use the face detect focus, it cant even do basic focusing if something is moving.. Rented one what a joke my 1/2 price R6 does way better on ALL focus settings for half the price 99% of photography is getting an IN focus shot. Plus as expected just like the R5 high iso sucks balls..

If people are so worried about low light or noise, just use AI noise reduction like ON1, its mind blowing how good it is.
