I just watched two other videos about Visoflex 2, one guy didn't even turn it on to talk about it, the other guy spent over 18 minutes but didn't say much about the quality compared to the older Leica EVFs. How you showed the Visoflex 2 on the M11 with menu/settings through a POV camera angle was superb !! Thank you.

Many Thanks for your video again. I thought quite a lot of Leica users not only care about what the photos produced by their cameras look like but also pay much attention to the camera's own aesthetic. I am quite surprised to see the Visoflex 2 retangular block design; definitely function over form. The battery opening design of the new hand grip is very similar to the same design on my Chinese made half leather cases on my M240 and M10. Has the Visoflex 2 got the built-in GPS? When I first got my Visoflex 1 for my TL2, I thought the built in GPS was a gimmick but gradually realized that it was quite useful for holiday snaps. CL and TL2 with those small autofocus TL lens made a fantastic small package for holidays. SL and M bodies are still enjoyable to use for other photograhy occasions. Leica SL2-S will be the upgrade I will go for and not the M11.

The open port is fine - USB-C connectors are sealed themselves from the internals. Rain should not be a problem. Sand might be, if you don’t blow it out, as it can damage the contacts.

Fantastic review. How do you think the EVF compares with the SL type 601? It did occur to me that the M11 with this great EVF and grip becomes a competitor for the Leica SL2 for a lot of applications. The M11 with accessories is a very light, compact and high resolution camera for both portraits and landscapes.

I think you can use the leather pouch from the V1 for the V2, they seem to be compatible and the USBC port is weather sealed (even tho the camera isn't) but yea I would agree that I would like some kind of protection there like for the hotshoe

how do you find the finish of the handgrip if you use it with the arca swiss tripod mount regularly? Feels like something that would just scuff up (not that in general it is a big deal I guess but good to know)

Thank you for that. I've had some serious/very-annoying problems with the contacts between my Visoflex 020 and my M10-R. Having a nearby Leica dealer clean the contacts on my Visoflex and my camera solved that problem - for the moment, but now I'm reluctant to disconnect my Visoflex from my camera. Other than the Visoflex tying up my M10-R's hotshoe, do you see any problem with leaving my Visoflex installed on my camera?

Thank you for another fine video. The open port question regarding protection, well I have some USB cables with detachable magnetic heads made both for Android and Lightening connections. I have the head permanently connected to my latest iPad Pro, {USBc}, to magnetically connect to the charging cable. Can these heads be inserted in the camera port for added protection? I wonder if you used the diopter adjustment and, if so, how you found it? Does it lock? Is it easy to shift accidentally? I also wonder if the additional resolution and OLD has any effect on battery drain? Did you notice?

Looks to me like Leica "found inspiration" in Kamerakraft's LMGRIP (which includes the arcaswiss shape) like they did with MatchTechnical's thumbs up. I love the cameras & lenses but it's sad that they essentially have a poorer version of another company's product for these accessories, sold at a premium on top of it. To balance this comment, I do appreciate that they stock up (at least in the US) with other companies' accessories in their brick & mortar locations. Looking forward to the visoflex2. I love your in-depth no-fluff videos, please keep up the good work!

Good video, nice peak inside. Questions: Why did you choose for the Black M11 (I love the vintage look of the silver/chrome and brass top ) ? I liked the older model of Visoflex over this rectangular one cause it looks more vintage too, what do think ? The improvement of the Vf 2 over the 1 are great though. Thanks for sharing

I would of liked to see the black m11 have the brass top & also miss seeing the Leica name engraved in the top. I to think the round EVF is a better looking style for M cameras but would probably look a little weird offset to the side to access the shutter dial. Just a guess that is why it is made the way it is. Not enough to keep me from buying one. Happy shooting.

Thanks RS. I love both, the vintage chrome and the matte black finish. The M11 sample unit Leica gave to me early December 2021 was black finish and I liked it a lot so for my own unit I also decided to go black. On the Visoflex you are right, the old one looks more classy & vintage, the new Visoflex 2 looks very "industrial modern". But the specs, as you also say, speak for the VF2 :)

Great video ...thanks ... agree for the Visioflex pouch look cheap ... But the USB port ...We do not have protection on our phones for USB connector and I never had any issues with that even using my phone when rainning so I desagree with you on that topic ...

an observation about the usb port, this could be fixed by an aftermarket 1/2 case, or full case, having a stud flap to cover this, ensuring the weather sealing of this part; as these have tradtionally been made to cover both 'naked' body, and griped body.

Looking forward to trying out that visoflex with my Telyt lenses instead of the old Visoflex III from the 60s. This could make using old manual focus R lenses and Telyt M lenses much better!

Not much to customize in focus peaking settings: on/off, color, sensitivity - that's all you find in the M11 settings, so not many option to customize the focus peaking.

The edge on the handgrip looks like it would be uncomfortable to hold during normal shooting? Can you comment on that?

The new Visoflex also fits into the leather pouch of the M10 Visoflex

I noticed last night too - will update people by a short 1min video clip. It actually fits precisely into the leather pouch, almost like made for it :) Thanks for posting the comment. And for people who do not read comments, I will post a short clip showing that it fits perfectly.

Nice explanation on the accessories. I think there are two other points to address on the Visoflex 2. Firstly, unlike the previous version, it no longer blocks the shutter speed dial, which was also a problem with the EVF on the M240. It’s great to see this when Leica finally designs the EVF specifically for the M, rather than taking it from another system. Secondly, the Visoflex has GPS built in, not sure if the Visoflex 2 has this as it is not mentioned anywhere. The GPS takes a while to get a signal but was a nice feature to be able to geotag your photos.

@Mike Treneere-Kernow It’s been years since I had a 240, but I recall the Leica EVF just overlaps the shutter speed marker on the top plate by a little bit. Not a big deal, you can still see most of the dial to quickly set the speed. A minor annoyance that it was not a cleaner design; for an expensive camera and accessory, the EVF was a bit of an afterthought by reusing the Olympus and Leica X2 accessory. The bigger issue was the black out time between shots but that’s probably a camera issue rather than the EVF. Nevertheless, live view on the 240 was still reasonably useable, and I got a lot out of it with wildlife on the Galapagos.

@Mike Treneere-Kernow yeah, i was just nitpicking. It’s just that all the other accessories are really well designed to match the bodies, and the EVF and Visoflex were so out of place. I didn’t end up getting the M11, still using M10 with Visoflex 1 (occasionally). I guess I am waiting for an M11-P or some later variant to come out, since the M10-P and M10-R were more than just cosmetic updates! Also, I figure if I really want a nice EVF experience, I just use the SL2-S.

@Mike Treneere-Kernow yeah, Mike, prices now are a bit insane and waiting for used is probably the way to go. I’ve bought digital Ms since M8 to M10, but I feel like the M11 price jump is way more than your typical inflation so I’ve held off. Now that the pandemic restrictions are a non-issue, I just want to get out and use the M10 more(I’ve had it since 2018 and only shot like 6000 frames). I never felt the need for really high resolution, so it would be great if Leica makes an M11 variant that is cheaper, with fewer megapixels from a great low light sensitivity BSI sensor. Kind of like the SL2-S of the M11. It’d be a nice change to get a cheaper M variant that’s not to get rid of excess parts like the M246 and M-E. The SL2-S is alright, a bit bulky and no way near as fun to use as M cameras. But autofocus is just so essential for kids… and the sensor and stabiliser are great! But if it weren’t for subjects that move too much, I would take the M10 every time. Thanks too for the chat!

First and foremost - Thank you for this very informative content, as always. I discovered a possible quirk with the touchscreen and was wondering if you might have some insight. I was testing the M11 at the LA Leica store - every time I raised the camera to my eye (visoflex attached) the focus magnification area selection had moved to the lower right corner of the screen. I realized this was due to the palm of my hand, inadvertently touching the lower right corner of the screen while holding the camera. I could reset the crosshair to the center of the screen with my finger by touching the screen but every time I picked up the camera to shoot, it happened again. Are you aware of any setting allowing someone to disable touch functionality or at least the area to enlarge for focusing? Many thanks for your insight. Nick

Yes, also EVF only, nevertheless, it would be a nice option to disable touch without having to disable screen.

I know the very same issue from the M10-R and it is not different on the M11. Extended EVF helps but then your LCD screen is black all the time. I do not know any better solution, unfortunately. Leica should have an option in the menu to deactivate touch. Maybe with another firmware update.

I watched a KZread video of the President of Leica commenting on the aesthetics of the Visoflex 020. He thought the Visoflex 020 looked "too Italian" or something like that. I think the rectangular Visoflex 2, like the Leica SL2-S, looks "too Austrian."

Can you show us landscape picture taken with the M11? I like to pixel peep and find out if it is worth my while to have a closer look at the Leica system. Perhaps comparing it to e.g. an older D850 from Nikon? Or a Z7ii with one of their z lenses?

I’m impressed, too. I have the Q2 Monochrom grip, but it’s annoying having to remove it all the time. The Arca-Swiss rails are a great idea!

I did not and will not mount the VF2 on my M10-R before the M10* cameras got their firmware update in March, thereafter I am happy to comment :) But there are strange rumours going around ... so your question is spot-on.

@@mathphotographer, with "Focus Assist," your M11 or M10-R will zoom in on your subject. How many MP do you really need in a Visoflex? Is the Visoflex 2's 3.7 MP really necessary for accurate focusing?

In the future, I hope Leica will introduce a Visoflex unit with a built-in hotshoe and passthrough circuitry to allow flash triggers to be used with the EVF. Regarding the “cheap” pouch, I think it’s part of the company’s policy to reduce costs? Take for example the M11 packaging vis-à-vis the previous M cameras, where the the packages involved a box-within-a-box with drawers for the accessories and printed material. Now the camera is packed simply in a foam-sponge padded box?

It's truly amazing that I had to buy a $22, amateurish-looking instruction manual for my M10-R on Amazon. An $8K camera with no manual included! I don't believe my Visoflex 020 came with a manual. It needs one.

And what about the option of shooting with a strobe or speedlight, if the Visoflex is mounted? I would love to at least have the option to remote trigger a flash? Don’t you think that it would give an extension to the camera that would open new possibilities?

@@mathphotographer this is not only the problem with m11. It’s the same with sl2(s) and q2. I wonder: how do you work in manual mode? I use to adapt the iso, but since auto iso and the good high iso performance there seems to be a better way. At least that’s what I found out for myself. I just want to set the f-stop and the time and then I line to balance the shot. With under and over exposing. My second camera was the om3 from Olympus in 86. I did something similar. I used the multi spot meter to under and overexpose the image by balancing the metering. And I was so pleased to find this new method. It’s very fast. And if I have enough time I check everything and then do the shot. But if you are in hunting mode on the street or in nature, dark and bright spots change offen. And I would love to hear your verdict on this, because you are doing such an excellent job over here. Thanxs Peter

I’ve been saying for some years now that camera manufacturers should build arca Swiss compatible bases into their cameras. These could also act as heat sinks to help move heat out of the camera. I have a similar grip on my GFX 50r, in that it adds a small grip to the front AND provides Arca Swiss compatibility at the same time. The Leica one looks very nicely done. I mostly watched this video for the visoflex info however. My first thought on seeing the nylon bag, was that it didn’t look in keeping with an £850 accessory. I have no immediate plans to buy an M11, but I am interested in getting a visoflex for occasional use on my M10-D….so I’m interested in how the new one compares to the old one. I’ve heard some folk say that the old one has terrible black out times, I wonder if the new one is any better in that respect.

I like the additional QD port that RRS builds into their bases - unfortunately they only produce an L (not a modular L like a majority of their other camera plates, but a fixed L) for the M11 which is bulky. Le sigh.

Some add-on info about visoflex2: on M10 (all models) the resolution is just 2,4 Mpixel, not 3.7 Mpixel like on M11. Bad enough, but confirmed by Leica Wetzlar.

I have the Visoflex 020 and I've found that 2.4 MP are enough. With "Focusing Assist" turning the focusing ring on your lens will cause the Visoflex to "zoom in" on your subject. I don't see a real need for more MP.

It’s definitely an M Serious camera! One quick Q, do you think the visoflex is an implicit criticism of the camera’s own viewfinder?

No, no implicit criticism. I guess that many Leica M shooters like the convenience of an EVF and that's why they provide Visoflex for M cameras. In particular when shooting at night, the EVF will see more if you boost up ISO. The built in OVF will be as dark as the night around you when you shoot at night time.

@@mathphotographer , in my experience it is impossible to focus accurately Leica's two Noctilux lenses - used "wide open" - without the Visoflex installed. Leica's built-in rangefinder is simply not up to the task of focusing their Noctilux lenses at f/0.95 and f/1.2.

I have tested a SL2-S, a fabulous tool for the price compare the M11 fabulous in hand, ibis, Wonderfull EVF but it's big and heavy, overall if you are walking as a tourist for a full day I finally bought a M11 + APO35 and I'm now waiting for the Visoflex the M11 is a really good camera but i regret that there is no ibis, the APO 35 is more precise than the peaking and the Visoflex become necessary, overall if I use a 21 or 75mm or even more how about the Visoflex result compare to the SL2 ? something also disappointed seems the weight of the accessories, I read 150gr for the Visoflex and 176 for the handgrip , finally if you take the M11 in silver with a M lens adapter you are at the same weight than the SL2, and even taller Can you tell us the real weight of these 2 accessories? since my pod is the new Arca Monoball, I can't use the leica handgrip i have decided to draw my own handgrip, using unidirectional carbone fibre for rigidity and nylon for the visible part (I have a machine to do it). it's not nicely integrated as the leica handgrip but it match very well with the camera look for a weight just under 45gr and only 6mm base thickness with the new Arca base , I add a nut for 1/4 screw, the place to extract the battery and put large USB C plug, SL2 handle style and rubber feet like the SL when you put the M on a glass table it don't make noise and don't slide it gives a SL2 without lens hand feeling, but you carry your M black with an apo 35 and a Visoflex i will never took it out, it's so convenient to handle the camera from the side with the tip of the finger without falling risk and when shooting I can hold and drive all the button from only the right hand

Yes, I have the correct weights from the Leica pre-info specs I got early December 2021: Visoflex 2 has 153g and the Handgrip has 176g so your numbers are correct and confirmed by Leica.

You can buy rubber or silicone USB-C port covers for a few dollars for a set of 5

Do you happen to know the weight of the new grip?

mathphotographer, the 90 degree position is NOT just for imitating a waiste level, it is important for microscope photography, copy stand photography and digital scanning (aka with a Negative supply setup); so with the lens pointing down, you can still see the shot, or what the sensor is seeing, so you can assure the focus of the adaptor and lens( in a bird scope, or microscope, you see through a different set of lenses, so to photograph, any glass prism, etc needs to be "collomated" to the viewing system you are looking through, so when you focus one, the camera's sensor is automatically in the same focus plane).

Do you have a Leica reference for that? Generally about weather sealing of the M11? I found the statements I saw on that topic a bit vague. Having said that, I shoot also my previous M cameras even when the weather is nasty, never had a real problem.

@@mathphotographer Let me see, I think it was in the video from Reddotforum that they said it. I think someone had asked a Leica representative and they said it was so. I do not know the IP but maybe it was IP67. Or IP65 and that is enough. So a little water does not hurt it. But I do protect mine just in case.

Who thinks focusing peaking in the M10R is not accurate. I hope it gets fixed in the new firmware.

I think they said the port is weather sealed like on an iphone

@@mathphotographer reddotforum mentioned this in their video. Though I doubt Leica would confirm any weather sealing.A waterproof USBC 3.1 connector is less than $8 off the shelf (probably $2 in quantity) so I doubt they would cheap out on this.

I would like Leica to incorporate Visoflex into the camera getting rid of that rangefinder, then I would be interested, as is no. Also keep this model of 11as is for the traditionalist.

Oversized packaging for the Visoflex 2, not environmentally friendly; I’m sure the German Government will have their criticisms about this too.

I recon this hand grip is just a money juicer! Why not just made this hand grip integrated into the body in the first place? This means Leica made a design mistake and try to fix it later!
