Tim from Military Arms Channel pays us a visit to test out three Lehigh Defense 300 Blackout offerings for use in defensive scenarios. 300 Blackout is the SAAMI spec verison of the popular wildcat .300 Whisper. The cartridge is based on the 5.56x45mm but fires .308 diameter projectiles at supersonic and subsonic speeds. Converting an existing AR-15 to 300 BLK is as easy as replacing the barrel, however most will opt for a new upper for convenience.

Do you think there are better calibers for home defense, in regards to over-penetration? (How that 194gr is) I'm looking for a PCC/AR pistol for home defense &, for the life of me, I can't pick a caliber. I feel like i find new information every day that concludes "there actually are much better options for home defense, in regards to over-penetration." Is that 194gr 300blk round the "cream of the crop?" Our is there anything, in your opinion, that is actually better? (Even if it's only by a small amount)

@@bullheadedgideon1673 The problem is that there are simply too many variables for "best" caliber or even specific round in a caliber. Important things to consider like; where is the home located (rural, suburbs, middle of town...), what the layout is, who would be using it to defend the home, do you have kids, were are the rest of the family likely going to be should you have do defend the home, even what the house is made out of (a lot of bricks? adobe style home...). You could ask 10 different people and get 10 different definitive answers (that all might technically be correct for that persons specific needs). I would post the same question on some active forums, give some more context for your personal circumstances, what you have available, what your are comfortable with. I imagine the thread would quickly become a shouting match between a couple stubborn posters but you should to to make a better decision based on responses. You could also drop the question into the comments section of firearm youtubers, whenever any of them make a new video pose the question asap and it will get a lot of views and opinions. I hope you can find your answer.

@@catosicarius3262 Thank you for the response. Well my main criteria is: what has enough "power" to put somebody down quickly, that would penetrate the *least* amount of walls. That's just about all I'm concerned with. & if that comes to a round that is easily suppressable, then even better.

  • @CASTRO45ACP

    @CASTRO45ACP

@@bullheadedgideon1673 If your super worried about over penetration and really want a PCC then the round you're looking for has been around for over a hundred years, the 45acp will suppress very well, but stops dead in it's tracks if it hits hard barriers even in +P loads and will dump a good amount of energy when hitting soft targets, I love the versatility of the 300blk though.

Great vid guys! If you get another chance, I would love to see an additional test. Lining up a gelatin block 3-5 feet in front of a simulated wall, with another exterior wall 8-10 feet behind it, simulating an assailant attacking, with a room and exterior wall behind him (respectively behind the assailant). The block itself would need to be of sufficient length to simulate the average human torso, then fire these rounds into that block simulating a home CQC scenario. Using the rear two walls (one interior, one exterior with siding) as witness plates to show what over-penetration- if any, occurs, and just how much collateral damage it could cause after successfully engaging and striking an assailant.

If you're going to use a rifle for home defense, have bullet resistant 'drywall' installed. Look up ArmorCore walls. They do up to Level 8 (which can stop 30-06). That way you won't kill your neighbors or kids (unintentional Planned Parenthood). Would love to see this channel test bullet resistant wall panels.

even tho you maybe sued in civil court for a neighbor getting killed which we should prevent of course, the felony murder rule applies to the intruders and not you, unless theres gross negligence than that may change things.. meaning the intruders that are breaking in a "felony" are responsible for any loss of life no matter who pulls the trigger. for example if two intruders bust thru your door and you kill 1 of them in self defense the other intruder gets charged with murder even tho he shot nobody. thats the felony murder rule.

It's a 7.62x39, _exactly same ballistics_. I think the 300 blackout has 51 feet extra effective range because of better manufacturing standards. My personal opinion is the *TWICE* larger cost compared to wolf isn't worth that, I'll just shoot two wolf for one blackout if I'm really needing those 51 feet. A subsonic 7.62x39mm might be superior, depending on loading. members.shaw.ca/cronhelm/762ProjectRifle.html

Props for talking about the potential for stray bullets when shooting in a populated area. This isn't discussed nearly enough by most people when home defence is discussed, and it really should be.Very often the people who have carbines/powerful handguns for home defence don't recognise how much a bullet can pass through and still be deadly. Awareness and education is good stuff, especially when it comes to topics that can save lives from pointless death by a stray round or ricochet or whatever else. Keep up the good videos man.

That sounds a little more accurate cuz I was pretty sure that a bullet can kill you .. ya it takes a person and a gun but the bullet is how the killing is done......... like a nail holds two pieces of wood together but you need to put the nail in the wood so you wouldn't go around saying people hold two pieces of wood together not nails

There is a medium to be had. I load my home defense shotgun (12ga) with 2 3/4 inch shells loaded with 1 1/2 ounces of #2 lead shot. This is an old school waterfowl load. Out to 15 or ao yards it is every bitbas effective on an organic target as 00 buck yet it isn't as prone to go through walls. Any time you discharge a firearm indoors you're taking a chance of hurting someone you might not intend to. That's just something you have to accept. Practice house clearing drills and choose your load carefully to fit your needs and you minimize this risk however.

Jhon Doe Even in a stressful situation i believe i have the nerve to maintain my composure under fire. If the person/persons invading my home are armored i will notice it immediately and i will shoot them in the face. It doesn't matter if you have an AK or an AR f they're wearing rifle plates because the ammo available to you and i will not defeat a rifle plate. In a very fluid situation I'd much rater be trying to shoot someone in the head with a shotgun than a rifle.

***** Even the weakest target ammo from a shotgun can go through a wall and injure someone on the other side. 00 buck can go through several walls, perhaps even after going through an intruder. I keep 3" shells with 1-7/8 ounces of #4 in mine right now as we have neighbors close by. No matter what load always be mindful of what's behind your target. Also a lot of people say birdshot is inneffective. Look up "birdshot wounds" on google images. Unless you are HIGHLY drugged or wearing armor, I doubt you will continue your assault after recieving a wound like that. But the wound may not be fatal which leaves you open to lawsuits and such. Kind of a catch 22.

Guys, I gotta be honest, this is not an ideal test. I get demonstrating misses, but what would be more useful when demonstrating choice for an HD round is a gelatin block in front of that material. We want to see what kind of risk remains after we have hit the target. We need to see what rounds will over penetrate after hitting a body.

Hey guys, I have watched this video about 10 times and I cannot see who you can say any of those rounds are good for home defense in terms of over penetration. The slow-mo on those shots show a very robust round that probably had enough energy to cause a terminal wound. That is why I feel any rifle used in home defense is suspect. There is just too much energy behind the round. Anyone sitting in that chair or standing behind that door would suffer a terrible if not lethal wound. Was there any follow up on this test?

I agree, too much power, awkward handling, Same with shot guns. I feel that my Glock 23 with Crimson Trace Green Laser Grips,(in the knee well of my desk) or my SIG P229 .40 S&W, with a Stream light/laser, ( on the headboard of my bed).will serve me quite well if the feces collides with the rotary ventilator! Which I hope and pray, never comes. Keep in mind that I'm 77 years old and haven't shot in a three gun match since the 1980's. I've spent most of my money on bullets, bikes, and broads. The rest I wasted.

Sure. If you live in a home where there are family members between you and the intruder or something to that effect, maybe a rifle isn't a good option for you. But I hate to break it to you, modern handgun rounds also go through drywall and chairs and doors etc. A rifle like an AR-15 is ideal for home defense, as its easier to point and shoot, has less recoil to manage, generally higher capacity, and causes more damage to the intended target. I've seen with my own two eyes, people shot multiple times with handguns and multiple times with rifles ... the rifle is the way to go. There is a saying in law enforcement: Use your handgun to fight your way back to a rifle. This is why every officer and civilian I've ever trained, I've recommended they use an AR or similar rifle for home defense. Only reason I don't carry an AR as a CCW is because it makes my pants sag too much.

Anything capable of providing enough penetration to reach vital organs and stop an assailant is going to "over penetrate" some of your typical lower/middle-class domiciles. Dry wall and those faux wood panel Walmart furniture just doesn't stop bullets very well, and a six year old can punch a screwdriver through your typical foam-core door. Do the same test with 00 buckshot or a .45 and you'll see a lot of them make it out the other side as well. You need penetration to kill, so rounds with reputations for lethality penetrate pretty well. That's life.

hate when people make a comparison video and then do not make a definitive statement on which they feel is better. "it depends what you want out of it..." cop out for making a decision for fear of being criticized. clearly you dont want the one that penetrates through a wall, a chair, and a door. (they all kinda did that so its prob a bit too strong of a round entirely) you should be able to identify your target before you shoot it, so shooting through a wall is almost always going to be irrelevant in self defense. not only can you not see the target but your chances, as you clearly showed, of hitting it are very small. not to mention, try explaining to a judge why you had to shoot from the safety of your room at a guy on the other side. if you had to choose one, the 78 is going to be the safest to shoot in a home as it didnt make its way through everything entirely. theres your real answer. it also could probably kill werewolves as its silver tipped.

I prefer it this way... they present the information, I decide for myself. If they tried to pin a rating on them, it would be based on conditions and priorities that they consider most relevant to them, but quite possibly not to me. Where I live any hazards caused by overpenetration are minimal, so while the relative hard/soft penetration info is important, a cartridge would not get down-checked from me simply because it kept punching through a bunch of obstacles.

I agree to some extent... but I think the intent of the video is not to simulate "blind fire" through a wall... but if you were to miss (which does happen in the heat of the moment), what would happen to that round, and how far could it go? Obviously you want to clearly identify your target, and have no other recourse but to engage, while controlling your shots to stop an assailant without firing errant rounds. But if you're getting rushed with a knife, or shot at, you may not have the luxury of perfect aim. Now what I think would be an even better test, would be to line up a gelatin block 3-5 feet in front of a simulated wall, with another exterior wall 8-10 feet behind it, simulating an assailant attacking, with a room and exterior wall behind him (respectively behind the assailant). The block itself would need to be of sufficient length to simulate the average human torso (since ballistic gelatin is an average viscosity of tissue and bone, so duplicating human dimensions would yield a less-than-average-mass result), then fire these rounds into that block simulating a home CQC scenario. Using the rear two walls (one interior, one exterior with siding) as witness plates to show what over-penetration- if any, occurs, and just how much collateral damage it could cause after successfully engaging and striking an assailant.

ya, i agree totally. shoot through the gel from 3 feet away and see how far the 300 goes then. thats a lot more realistic of a home defense situation. still think 223 is going to be better on all counts though when it comes to shooting in your home.. its made to fragment and wont punch through nearly as much. that being said, i love the idea of a 220gr 300 saying fuck you to a dangerous intruder.. sounds pretty boss
