I don’t agree with your generalisation of “small profit” from investing in Lego. No one would be in the business of scalping/investing if the returns were only a few dollars at a time. Let’s be real, you only do this for large returns. Reselling a set for double the price is not “small profit” at all. You may not be selling sets with a high markup now but if you’re waiting 10+ years before you make your move then you’re definitely jacking up the price. I also don’t believe in this practice as a legitimate way of passing on sets to later generations of collectors. Scalping/investing is a form of gatekeeping this hobby from others that can’t afford it. It also inflates a sense of scarcity in the market and puts even more pressure on casual collectors to buy immediately if they really want something. You can call this practice whatever you like, it is still a form of gambling at the end of the day.

I think I agree with most of your perspective… it is certainly a form of prospective gambling to a degree! And yes my hope is for maximum return barring any space restrictions. Do you not agree that investors offer larger supply to collectors who get into the hobby later down the road which I would say in turn allows them to get it a cheaper although still inflated price. All and in all I deeply appreciate your perspective! Thx for the comment

Scalping is what people did when the new consoles came out. They bought out all the stock to profit off so no one had a chance of getting one. These sets are available to everyone. We’re just taking the opportunity to get them before they’re gone forever. Great video and thanks for not encouraging people to scalp, it’s the worst lol!

Available to everyone until you buy everything on the shelf! Then Lego sees their expensive set just sold out on the shelves so they raise the prices for the next sets, y’all really have no clue about supply and demand or you’re just playing dumb to seem less scummy of a scalper.

Look, I really don't care what anyone does. I don't need to do any of this to fund my LEGO hobby, so I don't partake. The one thing I hate is scalping. This is more of an issue because LEGO underestimates interest in particular sets so they don't produce enough, then certain people take advantage of that. The Star Wars Republic Fighter Tank and Clone Command Station are prime examples. My only thing here is not really even the scalping itself but when people cannot even get the set, if they want it during the production run, for RRP. Maybe they need to save money and then by the time they do it is about to retire and scalpers have cleaned out the inventory. I just hate people taking advantage of others, that's all. It ruins the fun of what LEGO is supposed to be about. The sets are already way overpriced at RRP and then scalpers just make it worse.

  • @JakesBricks

Just wanna know your personal opinion... I am a young collector and have usually kept a few valuable things sealed to keep as future investments. I recently picked up the 2014 Lego movie benny's spaceship (set 70816) for only $80 in a pristine box. Since it sells for $275-315, depending on the platform. I was curious as to when the best time to sell is? I saw your other video where you talked about the best time to sell and how you said that saving sets for 10 years is crazy but i wanted to know if since i only recently acquired it...should i save it any longer? The good news is that unlike starwars, i dont think it will be remade. therefore, the value will not drop off soon, but that would just be my guess. If you took the time to read this i appreciate it.

So many Lego scalpers trying to tell themselves they’re just collectors/investors to cope. If you buy multiple sets in order to sell for more money, it’s scalping. Just because you waited some time before buying or selling doesn’t make you an investor/reseller, you are still scum clearing the shelves in bulk and leaving none for the kids. Every “investor” that makes a video like this says they have scalped while doing it, so there is very little difference. Stores just need to start making purchase limits like they did for the pokemon card scalpers.

Nice video, thanks! We do some investing only to keep our Lego hobby affordable. We don't seek to make a lot of money on it for our self, we buy Lego with the profit. Our best haul was when a local store had up to 70% discount on several sets, mainly Friends sets. For example we bought a set for €30,00 witch had a retail value of €125,00. We sold it for €65,00 so everybody is a winner. We got a nice profit and the buyer still got it way cheaper then the retail price, i call that a win win situation :)

Robert here, from Holland. I keep it small. Usually I buy 2/3 sets, from the sets I like. Ideally sets, that also would do well after retirement. I build some sets, some perhaps later. The other 1,2 I have I, will sell after retirement. Basically I only financing my lego builds for now and later. I could invest far more and I love spending time on lego. But I just have the sense the secondary market is about to get overly hoarded by investors in the years to come, on other hand when I am at any toystore I see parents and kids dreaming in front of al the lego sets. Makes me realize, Lego remains populair. What is your expectation of the effect the fast amount of lego investors will have in the years to come? And do you experience the same, that indeed Lego will continue to get populair under the next generation as well. After a dip 10/15 years ago. Most of the collectors now, are the ones who actually enjoyed Lego as a kid. I wonder what the smartphone generation will do later… As we are slowly becoming dinosaurs.

Robert this is an excellent comment! I should probably make a video on it soon. LEGO still continues to grow as a company year over year so I would imagine the demand will continue for years to come

I agree with you on all points Jake. Those that complain about investors making a profit are missing one glaring fact, and that is that investors buying in addition to collectors encourages TLG to do more production runs before retirement thereby increasing total units in existence and thereby increasing liquidity and lowering prices for collectors after retirement. Without investors I could never afford sets that retired before my AFOL collecting began, or that I didn’t jump at when they were still in production. I’m happy to pay up for a retired set because it’s fair when all things are considered. Great video as always!

Even though I collect lego since I was a child, I really started investing in 2017, with the goal to fund the legosets I build with it. One of my most satisfying investments was Löwenstein Castle, one of the original Bricklink sets (BL19001-1). Only 2500 were made, and I got three of them for 200 euro's each, with shipping that was € 641.34 in total. I used two of those sets to build the castle (the sets actually only contained half the castle: the designer released a design for the other half, for which you needed a second set), and saved one to sell later. I sold the two empty boxes for € 50.- each, one of my two instructions for € 50.- (it's not online available!) and the closed set for € 800.- (shipping was for the buyer). So I managed to build and keep a rare and awesome set, and get even a profit by selling the third set, empty boxes and instructions.

Excellent information!! Scalping is definitely a bad practice. At best you make a small profit and you might do a teeny bit of damage to your reputation among Lego buyers in your city. It's not too bad in either case - but it's just not worth while for the modest profits. Best flip has been a collection I bought with tons of grail tier sets - managed to 8x my initial purchase price and I'm only about 2/3s of the way through. I used the proceeds from the used sets to buy the BNIB versions of the sets that I just built. For investing I have overdone it on my purchases. I think I have finally figured out where I want to scale it down to and have figured out exactly what discounts to go for and what sets to buy. My biggest concern is one day I will sell all my good picks and will be left with a big inventory of "dogs". I'm trying to avoid this to some extent by burying one of each of my top tier sets behind the others so I can't see them to sell them until some time has past. Consistently great channel and absolutely excellent information - thank you!

I don't love the idea of buying a new set like The Office, hoping it sells out and then flipping/scalping but I must admit I bought an extra Christmas Tree and Wreath sets this year with the hope of flipping/scalping. If it doesn't work out, I'll either have an office decoration or just hold it for after retirement. That being said, I think you're kind of kidding yourself if you think investing isn't at least a lighter form of "scalping." If you consistently check store stock for hard to get items such as the Stranger Things Brickheadz or Star Wars Blister packs and buy them in October/November, you are denying a Lego fan from being able to purchase them. You are possibly denying someone from finding a hard to find set they want to give as a Christmas present. Yes you plan to hold it for another year and then sell it, but I still think it's a lighter form of scalping. I would say if you've invested in a set that was readily available at all or most major retailers for 2 years, then at that point I probably would no longer consider it scalping. Just my 2 cents.

I hope that didn't make you feel bad, I was just trying to be funny. I've sold hundreds of LEGO sets after I built them and let them catch some shelf dust for a while but until today when I listed some new sets from the 2000s onto Ebay I've never sold unboxed LEGO. It did make me think about the morality and ethics of it. This video definitely helped me understand where you're coming from as a reseller/investor and how it's different than simply draining the inventory and selling it back for higher to those who couldn't get it because of scalping. It's actually really wonderful that LEGO fans can still buy unopened discontinued sets thanks to resellers and it makes the hobby really exciting trying to predict that hits. I attempted at scalping last year. I felt terrible, which is weird, because when a set is on clearance I will buy many of them, but a person made me understand the silliness of my logic. I think there is a very clear motive when you try to scalp, or capitalize on limited stock of a set and make it hard for people to get a set. But in the supply chain, me buying 10 or 100 seta doesn’t affect anything. Now say 500 or 1000, then yes you will disrupt a little bit. I have found that used lego is much more enjoyable and fruitful than new. Being able to sort a lot, see what you have, pilfer for minifigures and the accessories, complete a set, its the best. People tend to see a lot as a significant time investment, between cleaning, sorting and organizing. I find that people let used lots go easier than say a sealed set where they can find a comparable price, and multiple platforms and sources to verify what they are asking. A random lot is a gambit, but when you know what to look for after a while, its easy money. Everybody talks about their greatest haul, just like poker players talk about their best pots, but Ive learned far more from my losses than I have from my wins. Most newbjes need to understand that it takes time to learn a craft. Jake, would you ever show a video where we get to see the vault that has all your sets? You have some serious variety when it comes to the sets that we can see. Thanks for the content, as always, and great insight!!

Awesome video! I don't loke Lego scalping and I think that's bad for Lego fans who want the sets. The most profitable sets for me are the first two lunner new year sets, which they were released only in Asia. I sold them online for 2x to 3x MOIC. IMO those Lego sets with region limit usually sell well, as long as you are able to get them at cost.

I have not done any scalping myself, but on luxury goods such as Lego, I don't mind it. If you don't want to pay the inflated price, then just don't. And it's not like you're entitled to be able to purchase a luxury item at MSRP. If you're talking about e.g. food or housing or gas, then it is a different story.

  • @studebricker2845

Scalping is traditionally used to make profits on things like concert or game tickets, where there is a relatively small number of "good" seats. That is totally different from buying Lego, where there are thousands upon thousands of copies of the exact same set, available at thousands of retail and/or online locations. So buying, as you say, 10, 20 or 30 copies of a set, will not make a dent in the total production volume of any particular set. Ergo, there is no "scalping" of Lego possible for the average Joe.

Scalping only works if the set is very popular upon release. You can’t buy them out of stock yourself. You are relying on the popularity of the product to sell out the release. You also have to be fast and resourceful enough to snag the product before it goes out of stock. You also have to be savvy, or lucky enough to GUESS which product is going to rise to the popularity necessary to go out of stock. It only happens with SOME sets. DeLorean is a good example.

There is no such thing as "lego scalping." Scalping is selling a limited quantity of concert/event tickets at a markedly-inflated price, in a hurry, to last-minute buyers because said tickets will soon be worthless once the event is over. Not the case, at all, with toys. Reselling is reselling, whether one does it a day after purchase or a year.

Noam! I think we agree… but would you say that if someone bought 200 of a set in an effort to get it to go out of stock is scalping or because LEGO will make more that it truly isn’t scalping?

  • @jackwade793
    @jackwade793 Жыл бұрын

The manufacture is responsible for scalping. If they made more, it wouldn’t be a problem. People also buy them for inflated prices. If they didn’t, it also wouldn’t be possible. Both are responsible. If I want it and can’t get it. I have to pay a higher price. The scalper shouldn’t buy out all the stock, but the people who want them should be there day 1 minute 1. We all have access to buy anywhere and wherever we are.
