I don't know what others think, but when I personally say Disney tax or Starwars tax (two different taxes, both applied) I don't mean the price bump LEGO adds to the product in order to cover the cost of the licensing, I mean the price bump they add because they know fans will pay. it's a tax for us, not LEGO. if they sell a 500 pieces spaceship with 3 figures for 60$, and they sell a 500 pieces X-wing with 3 figures for 70$, they added a 10$ tax for us to pay because they know we will pay it. They charge 250$ for a cool Marvel building because they know fans will pay.

true but 2.7k pcs to $250 is pretty good for a theme like this, star wars is often well above the 10 cents/part ideal. If you like this set you're not totally getting ripped off compared to other post price hike lego.

I know I outright _refuse_ to pay it. Even if I have to wait over a year to get my hands on a set, with the way they price them, if it isn't on discount, I don't want it. On the other hand getting an AT-ST Raider for $28 is awesome, waiting is worth it.

Its more spacious on the inside than I thought, but I see what people are talking about when they say its off scale on the outside, and its still got awkward places for minifigs. If they made it a bit bigger those space saving features would have made this a great display piece AND playset.

I know it would have dramatically increased the price even more, but the main building really should have used the extra 6 studs of space in the back. Every level would have looked more properly spacious with those 6 studs worth of extra space inside, especially the first floor with the staircase

  • @joeymatthews7980
    @joeymatthews7980 Жыл бұрын

This set really didn’t need that back alley and could have used the full depth of the baseplate to make more space within the building. The alley gap looks so awkward when any other modular is connected to it. For the price ($310 here in Canada) I would have expected far more. I’ll be waiting on this as it’s not exciting enough to buy right away and there are other sets with more value I’d rather have that have been out for longer.

Thanks, Jang. Good review and I enjoyed your reasoning at the end there. I think the days of the $200 modular are gone, which is why I broke down and bought The Bookshop earlier this year. Thought I'd snag one at a price I can feel comfortable with while I could. Glad I made that choice!

The modular prices are definitely kind of upsetting, even though they've gotten a bit bigger. $200 was bad enough when I was gifted the police station, then bought the Boutique Hotel, but then to have the hotel go up $30 because of inflation ... that really sucks for those who thought they'd wait on it a few months only for inflation to slap them in the face! I already cringe at next year's price for the new modular. I'm still getting over the shock of the Hogwarts and Diagon Alley sets, which I think is $70 and $50 respectively ... I really want those before they retire, but ugh ... that's NOT going to be easy!

This was the first set that I could see myself making changes to (I tend to build as per the instructions). I removed the bottom step of the staircase and foraged for pieces to finish the floor. Even that one extra stud width made a difference to the doors opening onto the staircase. I'll raise up the handrails on the mezzanine, and maybe try and remove the door play feature and widen the first floor in front of the bookcases. The minifigs were disappointing - normal Strange and a better Wong were in the Gargantos Showdown set, Scarlet Witch from CMF was much better, and no America Chavez which was really odd given the movie being promoted.

Consumers: "Lego is really getting too expensive as of late!" Lego: "Here's a €500 Harry Potter train that won't run on regular tracks! And have you seen our €300 Lighthouse that has a super cramped interior? Our €400 rollercoaster runs for an astonishing 2,5 seconds! Give us ALL THE MONEY!!!" I bought this set for the build, most of the minifigures disappointed me. I only like dead and sinister strange, and Wanda’s hairpiece. The iron man is fine, and the Spider-Man is cool, but could have been the iron spider suit. The rest of the minifigures needed leg printing, or at least for the alive doctor strange dual molded legs to make him exclusive, the greatest doctor strange you can get in LEGO

What is disappointing is that this is one of those sets rumored to have originally been priced lower ($210 USD) but was subject to the recent price hike and was bumped up to $250. Honestly, even $210 feels too much for this set but makes it slightly more forgivable. I, for one, bought the set on day one ONLY because Target accidentally listed it for pre-order for $200. It’s just infuriating that the year following record sales and profits that Lego decides to increase prices all across the board while many of us are still recovering from the pandemic.

I really hate the price hikes ... I suppose maybe I could understand it, but it sucks they applied it to all their existing catalog rather than just new sets ... I love the building and the set. However, I personally feel like they could have done better with the minifigures. I was disappointed when I checked what they have. Here is why : 1. I don't think the variants of Doctor Strange were as appealing than what I was expecting. They looked a bit dull and repetitive for me. 2. Bald Wong is fine. But I personally love when he has his buzz cut hairpiece. 3. They could have done better with the Scarlet Witch and Mordo. They look off without the leg printings, and I wish they added the red skirt for the Scarlet Witch. 4. They should've included an exclusive Ancient One minifigure because it would've made more sense including her than adding characters from Infinity War such Iron man, Spider man, and Ebony Maw. 5. I'm okay with the Iron man helmet. But I wish he had some arm printing.

While I completely agree any “premium” set, whether that is defined by price or by target audience, should in principle have no stickers at all, for something like this that is based off of 3rd party entertainment IP and needing a *lot* of unavoidable source material references/details, I can’t be too upset about stickers in sets like this and the Bugle. But I hate stickers on stuff like the creator/icons cars, the BTTF time machine, Optimus Prime, or stuff like the space shuttle. Those generally could have all their detail printed for not too much extra cost.

The images of this set made it look like Spider-Man would use normal blue rather than the usual dark blue which got me very excited because it would have made a very accurate Homecoming suit, which is one I want very much. It's expensive but it's clearly one that is worth that price, you get a full building and not just a facade. Now if LEGO would just do more prints and less stickers at this level of price. At least the removable walls are of a common grey color, wouldn't be hard to get the spare pieces to make another non-portal version to fill one in.

Edit, did they feel they needed to get that alley that wide to give room for the monsters tentacles to stay inside the baseplate? I just saw that when you put it next to the modular. I feel so sad they didn´t use a bit more of sidewalk and back alley, to get a hugely better building. The amount of design time it must have cost to fit everything so cramped together going back and forth between variants before making a decision on the final design, would have payed hansomly for the maybe 100 pieces they´s need to fill the gaps through all the floors. Especially when the second floor would not need that much extra when the staircase would come 2 studs free from the doors. I also miss a door from the front to the backrooms in the bottom floor. I am not a marvel fan, but as a lego fan i would have loved this building if it was just that much better and cheaper.

Love the build, but man these figures feel lacking. For 240 GBP I was hoping for so much more (minifigures wise), we could have gotten the villain from the first movie, the ancient one, Thor, Loki. But even if no extra figs were added, even if it was just a waist cape for Wanda, printed legs for Ebony Maw, the accurate skin colour and outfit colour for dead strange, leg printing for Mordo and printed rune spell dishes, it would have felt so much better. I adore the look of this build, but it could have been so much better unfortunately.

Another awesome review! Thanks! Really amazed by how you mentioned Sun Wukong’s staff. Why isn’t he sponsored by Lego haha😅

Does brick link not have the Lego Spider-Man from this set? I tried looking to no avail

All it needed to be a perfect set is +4 studs of the building.

I really like the overall look of the set, but I’m not into the MCU at all, so for me it’d just be another modular. At which point the high cost for what you’re getting, not even thinking about the extra cost and effort required to remove the “play features”, is just too much. Maybe if I can get a good deal on it somewhere down the line, but definitely not for full price.

Looks good, but why did they design two bookcases with identical coloured "book" layouts? I guess you can swap tiles around, but it feels like an oversight to me.

I hope we get that Scarlet Which hair in a cheaper set at some point because it would make the CMF Scarlet Which even better than it already is.

It's a shame they didn't use the 6 studs of width in the alleyway to give more depth to the building. That would have given more room for the stairs and the walkway around the top. Otherwise it's a really cool set.

I am disappointed there isn’t room for mini-figs to be posed inside near the furniture. I play the waiting game on prices I feel inflated a bit. I am buying kits I like post-release like one to two years out. I am wanting a table set up for a couple storylines that do not have dependance on the Marvel Universe. Thanks for a thorough review.

Could have added a meditation room and make it more roomier on the inside.

it doesn't look as good next to the Modulars as I thought. It's a different scale - It could look great next to the 3in1 creator townhouses! Maybe a updated comparison on your website/short vid?

It is actually surprisingly disappointing in many ways. Firstly and most obviously, it doesn't complete the corner but creates an alleyway. The stairs on both the ground and first floor are just terrible. Both the two bottom floors have almost no space and the kitchen area doesn't connect to the house (ditto the other area behind). I really dislike the removable walls, and the fact that at least one portal has to be open. And the one play feature - the alternate dimensions door - doesn't even make the scene properly. Why a black street light? Lego, what were you thinking? My view is that it is a simple but attractive front of what could have been, but isn't, a great modular, at a very high price. My impression is that, at a minimum, the whole thing needs to be re-built to the back of the base plate, to give sufficient room to the two lower floors. Sad.

A common theme for large LEGO sets: I don't want it, but I'm glad it exists

Completely agree with the 4 studs extra in the back. The cost was $200-$210 was before LEGO got greedy. The set looks great besides all the modulars besides the hotel which frankly still doesn't fit.
