Around a year or two ago LEGO put out a poll to gauge what things Technic fans wanted from Technic. A ton of people, even non-BIONICLE fans, said they wanted to see less Technic cars, and more Technic animals. I think it's entirely possible the next "evolution" of Technic will be the Rahi coming back with all the modern building techniques.

My dad always used to tell me how growing up in the 70s he would build Crector sets and Meccano, and mix it in with his lego sets to make all kinds of cool things. Looking at all these old technic sets really have that same look, and for the first time I'm realizing that Lego was trying to enter into that mechanical building toy market!! In hindsight, that's pretty ingenious, and it's wonderful how it's expanded into things like complicated system builds with technic mechanisms or structure holding it together, or the eventual creation of Bionicle!

  • @KerbalRocketry
    @KerbalRocketry Жыл бұрын

I really like the earlier skeletal look, you can see the mechanics and get at it easily, which for somebody like me who loved technic for its mechanical aspect was great! debugging why some change you made to a set doesn't work is so much easier without panels

I wasnt around forcearly technic but that is exactly the appeal I see. They never got a replacement I suppose? Imo new technic is too dense to really focus on mechanics, it feels more looks appealing, as in the finished model overwrites the mechanical functions

  • @Thinginator

@@NickonPlanetRipple For many people that’s also the appeal of the car chassis sets. If the cars have a bunch of bodywork on them, you can’t get as good of a look at how they work, but the car chassis are purely the mechanical parts of cars, nothing more. The supercar and the set before it at least had enough gaps in the bodywork to look through. Modern sets look good on a shelf, but all the cool mechanisms are hidden away. Sometimes you can’t even see the pistons moving with the hood open :(

I always loved when Bionicle had vehicles, they were purely made out of technic parts. Sometimes Lego makes Technic sets that are just the scale for a matoran or a medium sized Toa, so you could pretend that it was always their riding vehicle. Best ones are those motorbikes, they usually come with axel handles, easily attaching socket hands connections of Bionicle builds.

As a kid, I got a lot of second-hand Lego sets. Wound up with about half of a Technic Guy, and my little brother noticed the ladder pieces from some of our castle/adventure sets could be attached to his hips so we gave him a stack of ladders to use as "legs" - he also had only one arm. We loved how expressive and flexible he was (same reason we liked classic skeletons) and generally used him as comic relief in our collaborative Lego stories.

I've been fascinated with what the builder community has done with Technic. From exhibitions of connected rube-goldberg like contraptions, to working submarines which can broadcast real-time, it feels like Technic is equipped to push the limits of what Lego can physically do. "MOCs" for Technic can have truly impressive functions and capabilities. To some, it might not have the aesthetic charm of the standard bricks, but I feel it elevates the sets (including certain heroic figures) in a profound and meaningful way.

Great content as always! Though on an unrelated note, it's kind of crazy to finally get a transformers Lego set. I just hope they do more with it. Perhaps a whole line at a more affordable price? Anyways, great video Nick! Love you're content.

A perfect addendum to the "Old Technic" episode... whose name has a new meaning, I guess. It is rather wild how Technic has branched out and found its way into so many different subthemes, many of which already have their own dedicated episodes. On the note of the axles and everything being completely measurable in stud-scale... I didn't fully catch it myself until flipping through Throwbots manuals half a decade back. They really did have the part functionality all figured out.

It’s interesting learning more about Technic & finally getting a proper episode about it. Like you said in the video, Technic is everywhere now in normal system sets as well as it’s own line. I just got the remake of the Galaxy Explorer & that has a surprising amount of Technic in it. I bet that’s something people couldn’t have imagined back then, Classic Space & Technic combining to make a much bigger & sturdier model.

They used long Technic bricks to make the monorail and roof supports in the Beta 1 Command Base (6970) in 1980. Even the Command Centre (926) used a Technic brick as a roof support in 1978/79. Classic Space used the occasional Technic element right from the beginning. The Mobile Rocket Transport (6950) used Technic parts for the wheels and suspension in 1982. But I agree that these are nothing compared to how Technic parts are used today.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the large scaled Technic licensed cars, in theory. I like the thinking that in order to get those products closer to looking like the real thing, new technics....techniques are needed to accomplish that goal, and that's fine, as long as said parts and techniques aren't used for JUST those licensed products. What I'm saying is, I just want Lego to make more things that while are inspired by real things(like real life cars) they put their own spin on them. An example of this is the Creator Turbo Track Racer(31070). Or if Lego insists on making more real life cars in Technic, base them more on concept cars that never saw the light of day, like the Ford GT90. Tangent aside, great vid! Also wish those Technic figures survived.

Fantastic video, like always! I can't express how much I appreciate all the work, time, and energy you've put into these commentaries. 😀 As for the subject= Technic, as a line was, had been and always will be one of my favorite themes from Lego that ever got produced. For many years, I was mostly into action themes like Star Wars, Alpha Team, and Exoforce until later, when I got into Constraction via Bionicle G1. Since then and the abrupt end of Constraction, I've moved to Technic, which had become my No.1 theme from TLG that I still actively collect. Again, THX for making this great video! Keep going! 👏🤟

Technic was my number two theme growing up (behind the bonks). I had several and they were great challenging toys that above all else had great presence. Plenty of Technic still comes out that catches my eye, but I agree with ya Nick that some of the appeal comes from them being more toy than scale model. If I wanted a scale model I could build I basically would buy the proper kits like Revelle or beyond. But something thats fun and else world is an appeal I hope Lego trusts in again.

if they were ever going to do a real big bionicle ideas set, i think what i would want most would be a technic-built great spirit robot. it could be built out of pretty simple liftarms and would only really need to resemble the real thing in its face. it would be abstract enough to be picked up by the average joe looking for a cool big robot, but also could quell the onslaught of biofans that won't leave lego alone about somehow releasing bionicle again. besides, its the only real head-scratching set omission from g1 anyways. regardless, loved the new video!

It's funny that this video is coming out after the 2023 Bionicle leak is been out, given Bionicle super close history with Technic.

Modern LEGO technic plays it so safe its getting stale. Rarely any new parts(who needs them when you can just reuse panels), no constraction animals at all and so many licensed foreign car sets you'd think their target audience is rappers.

You know I wonder how some Techic lego display would look. I try years ago with lego Digital designer to build a mad cat and spider with the normal bricks though it been awhile sence I've played with the program.

I can't believe that you're into Lego at your age!? Only joking, I'm 43 and I've just come across your channel and I'm loving it! FYI I don't think that you're ever too old for Lego. I just recently lost my dad to cancer a few weeks back and even at 43 I still find making Lego is a fantastic way to keep your mind active. For anyone reading this the small Batman Tumbler for £35 quid is FANTASTIC value for money. I'm currently building the Tiderium that Argos (in England) had on sale for £52 quid which is also a great deal for your brick. I'd stay clear of the Jurassic World sets however, they seem to charge you just for the name and have very few pieces. The "Speed" sets are very good and some of them come in at under £15 quid. Thank you so much for your content. It's keeping me very occupied in my life during such a sad time. I hope that your subscribers are having as much enjoyment as I'm having. Again thank you so much. Take care and I look forward to your future videos.

I just rewatched all of Lego Rewind from start to finish, and I realized you never actually confirmed the series was coming back! It just sorta happened! You had the announcement of redoing some episodes that never actually happened, but not brand new episodes!
