    Robin, I highly recommend the TrixBrix double-length straight tracks. They are 32 studs long, and replace two of the standard Lego straight sections. This results in less joints, and an overall smoother ride. They are injection molded, and the quality is excellent. Thanks for doing the review of the items you were sent. I was very curious to see how the zero-gap switches would work. Carry on with your new room renovations. I can't wait to see actual city progress restarted!

    Liking the Flying Nottsman, looks really nice running. I’m a big fan of Lego steam trains, always nice to see how others build them. Just a shame Lego don’t make extra train wagons like they used to. I run a lot of the 9v stuff and found Fx bricks tracks good, not as much selection as trix in the points and junctions side of things. Best to use the floor space to plan out and adjust your tracks, be easier than trying to around buildings and roads later on.

    Love the train setup and can't wait to see how it progresses. Seeing the lego switch track on the outer loop though seems like a perfect place for a special platform for the zeppelin. Or if you wanted to go vertical (possibly a little crazy) it could be used as a merge point where a elevated track slopes down and joins with the outer loop. The elevated track could originate from an upper level of the train shed or even pass through it and join/split from another area of the outer loop.

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    Amazing test! Glad that Trix Brix has passed with flying colours, and i’m very excited to see the new layout too! have you considered making the central station have multiple layers (maybe subway, main line and the tram network) a bit like the central train station in berlin? Having 3 layers of trains on top of each other would really be packed and stacked!

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    @RobinHoodBricks

    Well my current central station has the elevated monorail tram over the trains and a subway entrance so it kinda will be that again. All linked up. I can't have an actual full subway station there as it's not near a table edge and it's also where I'll be crawling in. It'll be too low!

    Robin, those big ocean explorer ships, can you get a few of those hulls without stickers and some old cargoship stickers? Because you could use those hull parts to create some bigger cargoships and thus show cargo transfers from ocean going ships to coastal going ships. As for this layout, are those four tracks, your city station setup? Will you keep it like this or rotate it 90 degrees, so you have more room for this? And can you create a raised line? Because then you could run your your Zeppelin on it, for one. As for a funny, what if you made a modified Zeppelin? One that is two or three wagons long and has that shared boggie setup between them, for a better pushing power transfer? Could be the train to the airport, for one, travel in style. The yellow train, put that double car in the middle, as a mirror to the white one, it will then look better with it's lone big car, in the middle. As for your cabinets, can you mount a support plank in between them, for your crawl gap? That way you use even more parts of them, for a P&S. lol

    Robin, as a fellow Lego train fan, I love this design! I have a few recommendations though! I recommend trixbrix's R40 (same as original lego) for crossovers. these switches come with a little track called an R40 adapter so you can connect two like switches to form a neat little crossover. With 2 left and 2 right switches, plus some half tracks, you can form a 6 track long section with crossovers for both tracks. Trixbrix also has a 3 track long double crossover, which does the same thing. These pieces are quite pricey, with 4 of the R40 switches being around $100 USD with shipping, and the 3 track double crossover is about $60-70 USD with shipping. I would recommend the double crossover at one or both ends of the station, removing either 3 or 6 tracks. I would also recommend one of either on both sides of your loop halfway between the station. Thanks for the great content!

    I'm an ex model rail roader that's gotten into lego trains. I haven't bought any trixbrix stuff, but I have cut lego switches to get rid of that silly kink in them. Your 'packed and stacked' philosophy is what model railroaders call 'compression of scale' 😝 I only have a relatively small U shaped layout for my trains...but it has a port yard and a freight yard at either end (purpose for the trains to exist), a valley, an old town, a new town, a trestle bridge and even a subway station. My passenger train runs on auto using the power functions app and a colour receiver (coloured tiles on the tracks) and stops automatically at stations and ramps up and down in speeds for the inclines. The 'game' is to manually drive the freight train between the two yards delivering goods without interfering with the passenger train. It's lots of fun. What a model railroader would call a shunting puzzle.

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    @RobinHoodBricks

And I have some suggestions you might like too: Instead of having just "rectangular" circuit, try to put some non-90-degree curves in some places to make the track a bit more interessting. Or change the distance between the tracks in some places. And I think it would be great to have the zeppelin train parked in some kind of Inventors shed, since it was a prototype in real life and I think that could be a really fun build. One last thing I always suggest to city builders because I really like it: A section where the trains run tram-style on a street. I hope you might like some of these ideas too :)

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    I didn't want non 90 degree turns because of the cargo train. It's too long and heavy and that'll derail it. The distance between the tracks will change in the final placement, for even more density, and the street car idea is also a possibility I'm considering but not for these trains!

    I suppose without redesigning to make more underground visible when running it would be a waste to do a big loop like above ground. It will get pretty wild once bridges and crossing get worked in. The smaller narrow gauge had a tipper rail thing for dumping mine carts that looked cool. Having the harbor by the mine would work well so you can get multi use out of the loading cranes for shipping. Laying out the rails gives a bit of idea on critical table placement too. Maybe getting those in and then choosing a corner to work from would work? Not sure how much table space you would need to leave around the edges or cinched in toward the standing holes to maximize usage. That's got to be some trial and error to figure out.

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    @RobinHoodBricks

    Well proportionally it is more trains than the old setup but I'll still have much more building space. Roads and standing holes will be a lower proportion for example. I haven't finished the plan yet so don't know the baseplate total but it's about 400 I think!

    I get what you’re saying about squeezing as much into the city as possible. However, the zero gap points do permanently limit trains to under 8 studs wide whilst only providing negligible extra real estate. The Orient Express, Disney and Crocodile trains are 8.5 to 9 studs wide and any future “adult/18+” trains LEGO release will almost certainly be to the wider standard. You could of course run them on the outer loop with appropriate adjustments made for clearance.

  • @RobinHoodBricks

    @RobinHoodBricks

    25 күн бұрын

    I'm cool with that. I'll be making my tunnels and bridges have the same clearance so everything is tight. I like this as a standard. Those bigger trains can look out of scale for a LEGO city. They can look too true to life. I like the LEGO City look!

    Looks great and things are off to a rousing start! Given your preference for layering and levels, what about multiple subway lines at different depths, perhaps meeting up at a central transfer point to commuter/light rail. Each one could have a small loop with your patented cross sectional panes showing the trains whizzing by. Could be some maximum trainage.

    Great idea but if I want a second matching train it'll cost hundreds. Each carriage uses lots of practically unique parts and goes for about £100-£150. My train has three of these. I used to get them for about £20. I can't complain as maybe I caused the surge in their popularity!
